However, both nonprescription and prescription digestive enzymes can cause gastrointestinal side effects like nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and stomach issues.

Digestive enzyme supplements can help with symptoms like bloating, excess gas, nausea, and stomach pain in people who cannot digest food completely. Short-term use of these enzymes is acceptable, but if you find it difficult to get off, consider the side effects.

Enzymes require a watery environment to function properly, and it is important to ensure good hydration while taking these enzymes. Most people need 8-10 drinks per day, more when hot or exercising. Excessive digestive enzymes can lead to side effects such as nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and other digestive issues.

Recent evidence shows that active digestive enzymes can leak out of the small intestine into the systemic circulation, causing cell dysfunctions and organ damage. Digestive enzymes generally don’t pose the risk for severe interactions with other drugs. However, some interactions of digestive enzymes may be possible, including with the drugs Warfarin, miglitol and acarbose.

Warfarin is an anticoagulant drug that inhibits the clotting of blood/the formation of blood clots. Acarbose (Precose) and miglitol (Glyset) are alpha-glucosidase inhibitors (oral anti-diabetes medications). It’s possible that taking these drugs with digestive enzymes may reduce the activity of the medications or enzymes.

In most cases, digestive enzymes do not interact with antibiotics, so both can be taken if necessary.

In our bodies, food is first hydrolyzed, or broken down, into smaller molecules by catalytic enzymes in the digestive tract. This allows for easy absorption of nutrients by cells in the intestine. Each macromolecule is broken down by a specific enzyme. For instance, carbohydrates are broken down by amylase, sucrase, lactase, or maltase.
