Mold toxicity can cause respiratory issues and sleep disruptions, with 10 warning signs to be aware of. Molds and their mycotoxins can induce hypersensitive reactions and have immunomodulatory properties in immunocompetent individuals. Fungi secrete digestive enzymes onto the outside world, which can irritate everyone, but the effects are worse for certain groups with compromised immune systems.
The best way to manage an allergy is to avoid exposure to triggers, but molds are common and cannot be completely avoided. Vinegar contains acidic properties that make it an effective cleaner for removing mold patches from walls. Antihistamines and corticosteroid medications may help manage mold allergies.
Mold allergy can cause immediate reactions, but delayed symptoms may occur. If symptoms worsen in damp, humid, or moldy rooms like basements, it may indicate a mold allergy. Avoiding mold spores and foods more likely to contain mold or other fungi, such as mushrooms and yeast, can also set off an allergic reaction. Enzymatic activity may influence the allergenicity of an allergen source, and fungal enzymes may be useful source materials for identifying fungal allergens.
There is no evidence that moldy cheeses are potentially harmful to mold-allergic individuals. Enzymes can cause allergies through repeated exposure via inhalation in sufficient high doses and possibly by contact with mucosal surfaces. Causes or triggers of asthma can be divided into allergic and nonallergic etiologies. Aeroallergens can include seasonal pollen, mold spores, and mold.
Having mold inside you can worsen your mold allergy. More information on mold colonization and toxicity will be provided later.

When is mold allergy the worst?
Inhaling the spores causes allergic reactions in some people. Allergic symptoms from fungus spores are most common from July to the first hard frost. Fungi grows in many places. They can grow both indoors and outside, so allergic reactions can occur year-round.
Many molds grow on rotting logs and fallen leaves, in compost piles, and on grasses and grains. Unlike pollen, molds do not die with the first frost. Most outdoor molds become inactive during the winter. In the spring, they grow on plants killed by the cold. Indoors, fungi grow in damp areas like the bathroom, kitchen, or basement.
What Are the Symptoms of a Mold Allergy?. Mold spores get into your nose and cause rhinitis (hay fever) symptoms. They also can reach the lungs and trigger asthma.
- Runny nose (also known as rhinorrhea – usually a clear, thin nasal discharge)
- Stuffy nose (due to blockage or nasal congestion)
- Postnasal drip (mucus runs from the back of your nose down your throat)
- Sneezing
- Itchy nose, eyes, ears, and mouth
- Red and watery eyes
- Swelling around the eyes
Can you outgrow a mold allergy?
Of course, food allergies are not the only types of allergies that kids can outgrow. It’s possible for them to outgrow seasonal allergies, too, and stop reacting to pollen, mold, and other common allergens.
Yes. One of the techniques used to help children manage or even outgrow allergies is called “immunotherapy,” and this is one of our specialties at Premier Allergy & Asthma. Immunotherapy is basically a clinical version of exposing the process mentioned above, where your child gets used to an allergen over time.
In immunotherapy, one of our allergists will inject your child with a very small, controlled dose of an allergen. By repeating this process over the years, your child’s immune system can be “taught” to handle the allergen properly. This reduces allergy symptoms, and can even help your child outgrow their allergies completely.
Get The Help You Need To Manage Your Child’s Allergies As They Grow. It’s possible for kids to grow out of some food allergies, seasonal allergies, and other allergies. But whether or not they completely grow out of their allergies, proper allergy management is essential for minimizing symptoms and reducing the risk of serious allergic reactions.
Who should avoid digestive enzymes?
If you have a history of liver or gallbladder disease, or stomach ulcers, then you definitely want to consult a physician before taking digestive enzyme supplements.
Digestive enzymes generally don’t pose the risk for severe interactions with other drugs. However, some interactions of digestive enzymes may be possible, including with the drugs Warfarin, miglitol and acarbose.
Warfarin is an anticoagulant drug that inhibits the clotting of blood/the formation of blood clots. Acarbose (Precose) and miglitol (Glyset) are alpha-glucosidase inhibitors (oral anti-diabetes medications). It’s possible that taking these drugs with digestive enzymes may reduce the activity of the medications or enzymes.
In most cases, digestive enzymes do not interact with antibiotics, so both can be taken if necessary.
How do you detox from mold allergy?
Some of the richest dietary sources of glutathione are spinach, avocados, asparagus, and okra. In addition to glutathione, quercetin and N-acetylcysteine support mold detox.
If you’re recovering from mold exposure, you may benefit from a concentrated dose of glutathione through supplement pills, inhalation or IV.
The power of IV therapy is that it allows nutrients to be absorbed quickly and directly into the bloodstream, which boosts your body with higher levels of vitamins and minerals.
Our Detox IV features glutathione and may promote better energy levels, circulation, blood sugar, immunity and more.
Can enzymes cause allergies?
Enzymes can cause allergies through repeated exposure via inhalation in sufficient high doses and possibly by contact with mucosal surfaces (eyes, nose). There is limited evidence for enzyme allergy development from contact with eyes. In addition, only susceptible individuals will develop allergies.
How long does it take to recover from mold allergy?
How long does it take to recover from long-term mold exposure?. Recovery from long-term mold exposure varies based on individual health and the severity of exposure. Some may see improvement within a few days of removing the mold source, while others may take weeks or months. In severe cases, professional medical intervention may be required.
How do you remove mold toxins from your body?. Removing mold toxins from the body involves avoiding exposure to mold, maintaining a healthy diet, staying hydrated, and taking probiotics. Detoxification supplements may also help. However, it’s crucial to seek medical advice for appropriate treatment as excessive mold exposure can lead to serious health issues.
How long does it take to get sick from mold in your house?. The timeframe for experiencing symptoms from mold exposure varies widely and can range from a few days to several weeks, depending on individual sensitivity and the extent of the mold infestation. Some individuals, especially those with allergies or asthma, may react immediately upon exposure.

What deactivates mycotoxins?
However, clay mineral binders are not an effective answer to all major mycotoxins. Especially not against trichothecenes mycotoxins since their structures are not suitable for adsorbing by binders. Biotransformation using microbes and enzymes is the most effective strategy. It provides reliable protection against mycotoxins, biodegrading them into non-toxic metabolites. The biotransformation is fast, specific and irreversible.
In addition to biotransformation, a bioprotection strategy is also important. Variety of feed additives is available that contains plant and algae extracts to provide a hepato-protective effect and to overcome the immune suppression caused by mycotoxins. A combination of different strategies can counteract the negative effects of mycotoxins in poultry more completely, especially in cases of multi-mycotoxin contamination with the poorly absorbed fusarium mycotoxins in poultry feed.

Who is more sensitive to mold?
It is hard to say how much mold will cause health problems as some people are more sensitive to mold than others:
- People with current respiratory conditions (e. g., allergies, asthma, or emphysema)
- People with a compromised immune system (HIV/AIDS infection, organ transplant patients, or chemotherapy patients)
Always discuss your health concerns with your doctor, because the symptoms of mold exposure could be caused by other exposures and illnesses.
What are symptoms and effects of mold exposure?. Allergy and irritation are the most common symptoms of mold exposure. Less common effects of mold exposure include infections and illness. Serious infections from molds are relatively rare and occur mainly in people with severely suppressed immune systems. Illness has been reported from workplace exposures to mold. Although symptoms can vary, the most common symptoms seen in people exposed to mold indoors include:
How do you get rid of an allergic reaction to mold?
TreatmentNasal corticosteroids. These nasal sprays help prevent and treat the inflammation caused by an upper respiratory mold allergy. … Antihistamines. These medications can help with itching, sneezing and runny nose. … Oral decongestants. … Decongestant nasal sprays. … Montelukast.
Besides considering your signs and symptoms, your doctor might conduct a physical examination to identify or exclude other medical problems. Tests used to identify an allergy include:
- Skin prick test. This test uses diluted amounts of common or suspected allergens, such as molds found in the local area. During the test, these substances are applied to the skin of your arm or back with tiny punctures. If you’re allergic, you develop a raised bump (hive) at the test location on your skin.
- Blood test. A blood test, sometimes called the radioallergosorbent test, can measure your immune system’s response to mold by measuring the amount of certain antibodies in your bloodstream known as immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies. A blood sample is sent to a medical laboratory, where it can be tested for evidence of sensitivity to specific types of mold.
A small area of swelling with surrounding redness (arrow) is typical of a positive skin prick test for allergy.

What about black seed oil ? Also on the quick to find out if you have histamine take Claritin don’t know why this particular antihistamine works but it does especially for people who don’t know that they have histamine because histamine create some surprising effects in the body. It causes anxiety. It also causes mood swing, and Sensory issues, etc. – sometimes there’s nothing even visible on the body. It’s just all inside, and it literally could create rage (so parents who think their kid is acting up it might be medical) … the problem is finding our understanding with the root cause of it is. And some things for inflammation, or not good for both inflammation and histamine. I really suspect that this unknown histamine problem is going to become an epidemic, and that children will be filled with rage, especially as our environment gets worse
I have had an allergic problem for many years. It bothers me so much that I have to take medicine all the time. Although it works, but I feel it hurts my liver. Recently I started reading about allergies and it’s really the same as what Dr. Berg says. I never knew in order to avoid allergies, I had to remember so many things. Besides sleeping well to improve your immune system, you have to also reduce foods that include histamine, especially processed food. Sometimes I think it’s troublesome, but it seems we have no choice but to accept this truth.
I wass diagnosed with M.A.S T. Cell after being in e.r. 700 times for anyphalaxas and severe alergic reactions..i like the natureal herbal antihistamine in the health food store.. I noticed i do better after building up to 4 day water fast 2-3 x a month..But big question Dr?? I tried doing organic lemon water fast and after a day of that i get real sick..i also have a fatty liver since 15 years old .and was born with severe kidney stones sonce age 5…
Greetings dear Dr.Eric I hope your feeling well I have a question ❓ I have jaundice from time to time with lower dried lips and feel sleepy most of the times. I did CBC test and all was normal except my bilirubin was way higher than peak, the liver enzymes were OK as well POINT : I FAST ALL DAY ONLY TO EAT AT DINNER, is this common or related to liver damage?
I think mine is hay fever, but much worse this year. I started taking a half spoonful of Florida produced palm honey each day. Palms are common in my neighborhood so there is the theory that your local honey will help.. It might be making a difference. Did not have any alcohol at the neighbor’s 4th of July party. I only experienced my 3 consecutive hay fever sneezes today after I had half a tall can of watermelon beer. But it could be a reaction to the beer coldness and bubbles. Anyway, I will keep trying. A made a list of Dr. Berg’s offending foods.
After your article about bee pollen, I started to take them and trust me my body is ” collapsing.” in a good way I lived in NYC for 8 years and no allergies back to Europe in London I am suffering a lot each season, on top of that I am Swiss and you mentioned no chocolate no cheese… and I take apple vinager every day…😬🤦🏼♀️🤣🤣🤣

Is this helpful for only food allergies? I have a family member that is extremely allergic to pet hair. I was wondering if the DAO would be helpful with this or If eating a lot of histamine foods building up in your system makes him not able to then tolerate allergy to the pet hair or is it two separate situations.. Grateful for any advice. Awesome article thank you so much
I do wish the good Dr. Berg and others would begin to provide cautions in your articles. Milk Thistle sounded so great to me but As a woman susceptible to fibroid tumors or other growths (such as breast cancer…) Stay Away from MIlk Thistle & other estrogenic amping foods. Please do your own research before following advise from anyone else.
This is actually pretty poor advice…. Avoiding triggers certainly, the main ones are air pollution from chemical emissions, hard to avoid for most, but leaving the city can help, it’s not the pollen it’s the pollution weakening the system to pollen, avoiding cows dairy and/or wheat is a prime culprit, which most can handle sheep or goat dairy, and white rice. Lots of water to flush the system is key, as is herb tea such as nettle, fennel, mint, lemon-balm, ect in the morning, full of natural antihistamines, with or without honey which is also a. natural antihistamine. And fermented vegetables/probiotics like sauerkraut, Kimchi, ect all are fantastic to increase digestion, which lowers toxins in the gut and histamine response…. Vitamin C is also huge for allergies.
Several years ago was mowing the grass and ran into a mad hornets nest that was built inside of the out building. was stung at least 19 times on the head. They followed me into the house where more hornets fell out of my hair. The top of my head was now throbbing and painfully sore with these huge pimples. So I took a large dose of NAC, MNM, L-Glycine. Within a hour the soreness was gone, the swelling was gone and I felt great. Seemed like had lot more energy. but I waited until the next day to finish mowing the grass. So question is: With all of the conversions taking place how did this work so fast? How do this affect the histamine response? Did the histamine cause inflammation?
I have meat allergy. Any mammal meat I eat, causes me to faint because my Blood pressure decreases as I am eating my meal. The heartbeat slows down and I can’t breathe. A pressure builds into my ears and my eyes dim the surrounding lights. I honestly feel like dying. I guess it’s alpha gal or whatever but mostly I think I just psychologically can’t accept killing and eating something.(Fish is fine tho)
I changed my diet to a healthy one but since a few days my mouth swell after eating foods which are high histamine. It wasn’t a problem as I had a crappy diet. So now I eat healthier but get sicker? Apart from that my skin and mental health and energy is way better now. Please help me I don’t know why this happened
I could be wrong but wouldnt sweating boat load of sweat in a hott sauna help get histamine lut of the body and resolve histamine intolerance? The heat is simulating a fever and you get red and itchy in there just like a histamine reaction but your also sweating out whatever it is in your body that is causing the allergic reaction with histamine. Which once you sweat out the toxins and the stuff causing the alergic reqction you will resolve A LOT OF THE HISTAMINE PROBLEM QT ITS CORE
I have a histamine intolerance, as well a bunch of other autoimmune type issues. Strict lion’s diet (beef, salt, water) for 4 months trying to fix it. I had my DAO levels checked before and they were good. Never heard of HNMT before. Should I take a HNMT supplement and milk thistle? With all the amazing changes I’ve experienced on the diet, I am very hopeful that sticking to it will cure it eventually, but if this can speed up recovery, I’m in.
Is fasting good for healing bones? I jumped into the lake and hurt my foot. I’m in a lot of pain, but I don’t have insurance… I probably wouldn’t go to the hospital regardless. My buddy broke his back and leg and the Dr told him he will heal faster if they amputated his leg…………I need my foot so I’m hoping if I don’t eat for three days my amazing body will just heal itself
Hi Dr. Berg, i have a curiosity for you. So this article is extra important because there are so many people that need better allergy treatment! I had not heard of the cow liver extract pill and that got me to thinking… why cow? Not too long ago there was a big hubbub about pig bladder powder as a stem cell treatment that works on humans because the organs of a pig have this lining of stem cell mesh that has an incredible capability to change its DNA from the pig’s dna, to match the dna where it has been injected! Pig cells are highly adaptive to the human body so i was wondering if MAYBE it would be worth experimenting on pig liver powder side by side with cow liver in test subjects to see if the more human adapting animal produces same, better, or worse results than the cow??? I need my own lab so bad lol. And it is pretty convenient that it is another highly farmed animal so the liver powder would be utilizing a farming waste product. Since you typically see cow liver sold for consumption but never see pig liver sold?? The farm may have to modify the pig’s diet to be a healthier assortment but its a specialty product anyway. You could potentially harvest the meat from the pig, the liver to turn into an allergy treatment AND the bladder lining to use as wound care, all from the same animal. And you wouldn’t be taking anything away by switching from cow to pig liver because the cow liver IS already sold in stores to be cooked and eaten. I also wonder if the stem cell activity from pigs to humans varries depending on the breed of pig?
I am a little desperate. For more than three years I eat keto which made me loose 30 Kilograms (about 60 pounds I guess) very quick. After two years I had a kidney stone blocking the canal. So I learned to quit almonds and -milk and spinach because I guess the stones come from too much oxolate in my body. Because of your recommendation I was drinking apple vinegar with a blended lemon plus kefir every day. Now I am getting hives and rashes all over my body out of nowhere. So I need to stop fermented things like kefir, apple vinegar and cheese, I guess. I am right now building up my immune system in the colon with lactic acid bacteria. But after weeks of usage it won’t get much better. It feels like a never ending story.
Hi one question, l’ve been havin foamy urine since three days is my 10th day water fasting I drink 3 litters a day and some electrolyte like 200ml. 1 have no bodypain no headache no nausea but I have gassy stomach sometime lightet sometimes stronger like today but without pain. Bought an enema kit to see if it would detox better cleanse my colon. Why does it happen with the Urine so foamy from Morning to night?
I have MCAS which makes my mast cells release histamine too much and to non-allergic triggers. I’ve found that all the dietary triggers being removed help, but I have to eat so restricted that I’m starting to get vitamin deficiencies. Also, all the healthy rebuilding materials like probiotics, fermented foods, and collagen cause a histamine release, so I cannot use them. I especially wish there was a way to supplement to heal the gut because that supposedly will help the histamine.
Can you talk about the optimum amount and sources of protein for muscle hypertrophy and natural testosterone boosters please. I heard (Schoenfeld et al research study 2018) it was 1.76g per KG of bodyweight to prevent muscle loss and allow for growth assuming you are not massively overweight. So around around 5 chicken breasts for a 85kg person per day.
It seems there is an epidemic of inflammation and joint pain and I have been reading about the 3 different responses in the body by histamines that cause joint pain that is relieved by antihistamines. One is I believe boswella extract with 5-Loxin? One I think is low dose Claritin? Think my joint pain is caused by eating too much dairy which is a common side effect. Anyway, the 3rd antihistamine isn’t available OTC so going to try no dairy for 30 days then the 2 antihistamines and see. There is a post where people with RA get relief using Claritin/5-loxin so it’s not purely hearsay…
