If the soft stool doesn’t have any blood and the puppy is still active, eating well, and not vomiting, there’s probably no need to rush them to a veterinarian. However, it is important to contact your veterinary office to discuss the signs.

If your dog’s droppings are suddenly softer than usual, it could be due to a variety of factors. If the stool is soft, mushy, and hard to pick up, it is considered diarrhea. Is soft stool considered diarrhea?

“Avoiding the extremes can help you achieve better gut health. Don’t be preoccupied with every minor change,” said Christopher Hurley, MD, Avera Medical Group Gastroenterology. “On the other hand, don’t avoid looking altogether and miss a red-flag warning like blood in the stool.”

Is soft dog poop okay?

Both diarrhea and soft stools, if left untreated, can cause bigger health issues down the road. They can result in dehydration and metabolic imbalances, which is why you want to monitor your dog’s poop to ensure the issue gets resolved.

If you do notice either diarrhea or soft stools, try to identify any changes you’ve made recently to your dog’s routine. For example, did you change to a new dog food? Has your dog recently gotten into something he should have, like the garbage? Is your dog getting enough protein and fiber? It will be important to report any such changes or deficiencies to your veterinarian.

There are several things you can do to help firm up your dog’s stool if they are soft. Here are a few things you can try that may help.

How long should soft stools last in dogs?

Diarrhea: Worry or wait?. If loose stool lasts more than two days, call the vet. Diarrhea is no fun for you or your dog, but the good news is that most cases resolve on their own. Mild cases are usually uncomplicated, and the dog is otherwise happy and normal.

“Many cases of diarrhea in dogs and cats are mild and self-limiting,” says Dr. Meredith Miller, associate clinical professor of small animal medicine. “If a pet stops eating, is lethargic, the diarrhea is black or tarry in quality, there is associated vomiting, or the diarrhea doesn’t resolve in 48-72 hours then veterinary care should be sought.”

Under normal conditions, water is absorbed through your dog’s gastrointestinal (GI) tract to be used within the body. When they have diarrhea, everything passes through too quickly, and excess water is expelled along with the waste products. Over time, this can cause dehydration. Vomiting, in addition to diarrhea, further accelerates dehydration. Dehydration causes electrolyte imbalances in the body, puts extra strain on the kidneys and can lead to organ failure and death.

Is soft serve stool considered diarrhea?

Everybody has their own stool consistency that’s considered “normal” for them. But, in general, a type 3 or 4 is best, Dr. Stein says. “Four is kind of a soft serve consistency,” she explains. “It’s easy to pass and smooth. That’s considered ideal.”

Having a type 3 or 4 poop indicates that you’re well hydrated, but it’s not as liquid as diarrhea, which suggests you’re passing things too quickly through your GI tract, Dr. Stein says.

If you’re experiencing a stool type outside of the “normal” range, you might consider taking action to improve your digestive or bowel health.

One simple way to improve bowel health is to drink more water and add more fiber to your daily diet. “Fiber and water work together to keep things moving easily and smoothly through your digestive system,” explained Nichole Dandrea-Russert, R. D. N., author of The Fiber Effect.

How do you fix soft stool in dogs?

If you have checked the feeding amount is correct, cut out treats and spaced the meals and your dog is still producing soft poo the addition of just a couple of tablespoons of cooked carrot, sweet potato or squash to their meal can work wonders in firming up their poo. It should be a pretty quick change too. Use cooked veg, not raw, as this makes them more effective at absorbing extra water. Your dog will be producing firm poo in no time.

Sometime the reason your dog produces a soft poo may not be related to what they have eaten. Stress or over-excitement may trigger your dog to go to the toilet producing soft stools. Make a mental note of what your dog was doing just before producing the loose poo and see if you can spot a pattern. Knowing what is the trigger can help you avoid these situations and ultimately the loose poops!

Over exercise can also trigger the bowel to empty before it is ready. If your dog suffers from loose stools after an exciting ball session you may need to cut it back to less vigorous exercise.

Is soft stool the same as diarrhea in dogs?

NOT NORMAL. If the stool is soft, mushy, and hard to pick up, this is considered diarrhea. The colon is the organ that absorbs the water from the intestine, so if the stool is abnormally loose, the colon is not functioning properly. Some dogs want to “mark” with their excrement. It is not normal for a well-trained dog to have accidents in the house.

Some dogs will have a normal bowel movement at the beginning of a walk, and then proceed to have one or more BM where the stool is soft. This is simply because the fecal contents have been sitting in the colon long enough for the water to be absorbed. As long as the dog is happy, eating, and not having any accidents, this can be normal behavior.

When cats get diarrhea and they are using a litter box, it will often be covered in litter and look more like a ball or urine rather than poop. Small animals can become dehydrated easily due to diarrhea, especially if they are also vomiting and/or not eating.

Is it okay for dog poop to be soft?

If your dog’s stool is too soft and runny, it means that the large intestine is not reabsorbing water as it should. If it’s too hard, it can indicate dehydration and other types of problems.

Non-dietary reasons for soft stools in dogs can include allergies, skin issues, or other health issues. It is important to consult your veterinarian for a comprehensive diagnosis and treatment plan.
