Does Cephalexin Cause Dogs To Have Diarrhea?

4.5 rating based on 103 ratings

Cephalexin is an antibiotic widely prescribed to treat bacterial infections in dogs, and it is available in both brand-name and generic forms. It is typically given to dogs every 12 hours for a few weeks, with side effects being rare but potentially including vomiting and diarrhea. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, which are usually mild and temporary. Serious side effects are rare but may include severe side effects.

Cephalexin is effective against several dog diseases, including urinary tract (UTI) skin infections, and can cause gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. It is generally safe, effective, and well-tolerated by most dogs. However, if these side effects become severe, immediate veterinary attention is crucial. Allergic reactions can escalate quickly and may become life-threatening.

Cephalexin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the cephalosporin class, which plays a crucial role in canine healthcare. It is available in capsule, tablet, chewable tablet, and oral liquid forms. If these side effects become severe, contact your veterinarian.

Gastrointestinal issues such as vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite are fairly common when taking cephalexin. Overdose of cephalexin can result in severe vomiting, diarrhea, excessive drooling, and watering of the eyes. Large overdoses may cause mild side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

In summary, cephalexin is a crucial medication in canine healthcare, providing a vital tool for veterinarians and pet owners alike. While it is generally safe, too much cephalexin can make a dog sick, while too little can cause their infection to worsen and contribute to antibiotic resistance.

Can antibiotics give a dog diarrhea?

Antibiotics are an important tool for treating dangerous bacterial infections in cats and dogs, but they can also come with some negative effects (like diarrhea). Antibiotics can disrupt the delicate balance of bacteria in the gut, which can lead to a range of health problems.

Fortunately, there are ways that you can support your cat or dog during and after antibiotic treatment. On a daily basis, AnimalBiome’s science team is researching and gathering data to create important tips for pet parents to use to support their pet’s gut health during and after antibiotic treatment.

The gut microbiome is a complex ecosystem of bacteria and other microorganisms that live in the intestines of animals. Even though they’re tiny, the microbes that live in your pet’s gut microbiome play a crucial role in digestion, immune system function, and your pet’s overall health.

Appropriate culture and susceptibility tests should be performed before treatment to determine the causative organism and its susceptibility to cephalexin. Therapy with RILEXINE chewable tablets may be initiated before results of these tests are known; once the results become available, antimicrobial therapy should be adjusted accordingly. If acceptable response to treatment is not observed, then the diagnosis should be re-evaluated and appropriate alternative therapy considered.

  • My old Vet Pennfield Animal Hospital accidentally overprescribed metronidazole an antibiotic to my dog Cooper for 30 days. I asked him any side effects, he said no. 21 days later he couldn’t walk, first vet at VCA emergency hospital in Kalamazoo told me he a back sprain. Two days later Cooper was having seizures, drooling, eye twitching and couldn’t stand, I took him back to emergency hospital, second vet said he was a brain issue. I asked both emergency vets could it be toxic, they said no. I had him euthanized. Three days later my local vet called and said he overprescribed metronidazole and for too long, he said Coopers symptoms were caused by the drug reaction, he didn’t have a back sprain or brain issue. The metronidazole could have been stopped and he probably would have been okay. I’ve been crying for 3 weeks. I don’t trust vets anymore. My best friend is gone.

  • I gave my dog metronidazole antibiotic prescribed by the vet to treat a stomach inflammation she had due to the food she was eating. We switched diets but only after 3 doses she lost completly control of her back legs. We realized it was the medicine so we stopped the treatment. Her stomach is better but she still can’t walk or move her back legs. What could I do to reverse this neurological effect that antibiotics have…

  • My puppy of 7 months was on doxycycline for last 13 days for the treatment of tick fever. Her recent blood work shows normal platelets but liver hormones are 10-20 times higher than normal limits. What to do? Apparently the precribed dose was way higher than required. Vet stopped the doxy and prescribed multivitamin for her.

  • Hi doc. My dog was given a heartwarm preventative injection, come to find out two weeks later his results were positive for heart-warms. They prescribed him doxycycline twice a day for 30 days but after day 5 I stopped it, he lost appetite & energy. Any advice ? I am really worried. He’s been so sad all day no energy and coughing

  • Hi Dan, Thank you so much for sharing your knowlegde in the article’s. My senior dog had a serious surgery about 4 weeks ago and had antibiotics for 3 weeks. I will start for sure with probiotics asap! She has always been on a raw diet and supplements like CBD, muscle support (herbs). She had surgery on a very large cholesteatoma in her middle ear and it has been removed. My dog is recovering very well, no diarrhia, good wound healing, etc. I would like to ask if you have any advise to prevent her from re-growing this cholesteatoma. I cannot find anything, eather regular or natural ways, to prevent this condition. Many thanks in advance!

  • Glad I found your great website! My boxer dog is having a hard time 😥 He had an eye injury. Turned into a bad infection/swollen lymph nodes. He was still active and acting like his normal self. Gave him 1 dose of enrofloxacin antibiotic. 4 hrs later he threw up. Next day, vomiting, excessive thirst, peeing all over, twitches, weakness, wobbly walking, not wanting to eat much. Stopped antibiotic immediately, 5 days later and he is still not himself 😥 Is there anything I can do to detox that out?

  • In need of advice PLEASE! I spent over $1000 on a foster puppy.. I originally got him and he wasn’t eating & I could tell he wasn’t feeling the best.. though he started to feel better as the days went on but I just wanted to get a wellness check to see if he was okay. Before I decided to go he had also consumed a bulky stick so I was worried that it could have been lodged somewhere. So that was another reason for going.. the evening before going to the vet the next day, he was sadly hit by a car. I called the emergency vet & they said he would be fine to get checked the following day. So I waited until the next morning to get home checked out. I took him into a walk-in, he got X-rays, blood work & an urine analysis. I think that was all. I came back and they said his blood levels were a little low but other than that he was fine. So I was relieved and took him home. Through out the day he developed a cough that got worse and worse, so I was really concerned because I wasn’t sure if was from the car or not. So I bring him back the next morning & they take some blood to see if his levels to compare them to the day before & they said they looked better. So they wanted to give him antibiotics to cure whatever was going on with him, they weren’t sure. So one they gave him fluids, a pain injection shot (which was a horrible idea), & antibiotics. They gave him doxycycline & clavamox… within the first day he started to feel better! I noticed he was very gassy but he was eating really good and his stool looked “great.

  • Hi! My dog got a nasty tail infection 2 weeks ago, took him to the vet and they prescribed cephalexin. It went well, now the big problem I am having is my dog keep chewing the healed scabs, causing himself even more harm. The vet has prescribed zeniquin but I am a bit hesitant to start another round of antibiotics. Is it safe? Is there another way to get my dog to stop chewing his own tail? I’ve tried many different cones he keeps removing them. People have told me to muzzle him but I can’t keep him muzzled all day. It’s so inhumane. What can I do in this situation? 😢 he is a 9 year old shepherd in great condition. He is healthy, active and it breaks my heart to see him in this situation.😢

  • Hello Dan, great article, my dog had bladder stone surgery to remove 3 stones 4 days ago. He was not given antibiotics only pain medecine, but now he is peeing and seconds after he strains and wants to go again but nothing comes out, should I be worried that is a Dog UTI? Or any infection, please help.

  • @ Dan Scott My puppy got fixed few weeks back. When they gave pain medication they also gave antibiotic and said she had rash probably from groomer. I didn’t see any rash but did t want to take a chance. So gave her the whole course (10 days) I wish I saw this article before. Recently she is always asking for food. She has never been like this before. So I am connecting to the antibiotics. Currently, I am giving her green vibrance( 1/3 scoop). She is 50 lbs. Should I add probiotics as well? Please advise.

  • My dog as a staff infection on her stomach and she keeps scratching terribly. So the doctor gave me some antibiotics to give her and I noticed the second time she went out to defecate today it’s starting to get soft. The doctor also gave me some probiotics to give her a few times a day to try to stay off this diarrhea do you have any suggestions

  • Hello Doc Dan, i have to bring my dog to vet because of wound caused by scratching, the vet gave my dog injectable antibiotic but she said it needed 2nd dose. Is it okay not bring my pet back for 2nd dose? Is there qny side effect not taking 2nd dose of injectable antibiotic for my dog? My dog is turning 6 months this october 11. Really needed to know your answer Doc. Thank you.

  • Hello Dan, I hope all is well with you and your family. Thank you for sharing, as always, much appreciated. Dan, my Yorkie, eho is 15, has a bit of puss like accumulating around the tear duct area of his eyes. It’s been 3 days now. I started just by scooping it out gently with a cotton ball dipped in saline solution. Yesterday, I put 2 drops of Colloidal Silver in each eye. I am going to try this for 5-7 days to see if it clears up. Ugh, my other dog, 13 year old Havanese, woke up with a lil puss in the same area today. Going to do the same for him. What’s your educated opinion on what I am doing, and would you do something different if it were your fur babies? Thank you sooo much for caring💞

  • I have an intact 7 year old male dog currently on 2 antibiotics for a UTI, which the vet says is being caused by enlarged prostate & that he should be neutered. The 2 bacterium in his urine were strep & staph. He is on enrofloxacin & SMZ/TMP for 30 days. I want to focus on clearing the infection & getting good bacteria back in Jim & boosting his immune system. Are the probiotics you linked here the best/strongest to use after antibiotics? And would the beta glucans be another good supplement? He gets raw or freeze dried food once a day, and a high quality kibble mixed with canned the other feeding. Since he is halfway through these antibiotics I want to finish them but then need to boost his immune system and fix his gut. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Hello Doc I love your articles, I am looking for your advice my 1 year old Golden Retriever got a skin infection and the vet gave us antibiotic pills and cream it is day 5 and we noticed my dog is panting A LOT and breathing very fast throughout the day. I never seen him breathing so fast non stop I am very worried. Could you advise me what could be causing this excessive panting and breathing? Is it because of the meds? I think his nose is warmer than usual, he eats normal and stool is normal. I feed raw and give him kefir. Thank you Doc.

  • THANKYOU SIR! I I have a beautiful German shepherd/catahoula mix and she had a UTI at 8 weeks so my vet gave her amoxicillin and then a month down the road she started having white blood cells in her urinalysis again and started peeing less volume so he prescribed clavacilin for another round. I thought there HAD to be a natural remedy for this instead of biotics ans I always like to take natural approaches to problems, it troubled me that this would hurt her overall health. Your article was the only one I found after lots of research to give me natural remedies for restoring the lost probiotics and explain what happens when dogs run the course. I ordered oregano oil and probiotic chews from Amazon and I am giving her fermented goats milk once a day to try and help as well.

  • Hello! your website’s articles have been a big health- recently, we took my two puppies to the vet to get vaccinated, but they have instead been prescribed with a probiotic (ener-g) and black armor because one of my puppies (nicnic) have just recently recovered from severe diarrhea, now for some reason, both puppies were prescribed to take the medicine even though only one of them got diarrhea, ever since I have been giving them their dosage, the other puppy (mucho) had started vomiting and refusing food- I would check his gums and ears and they seem just fine, but his condition has been getting so bad where he isnt as energetic as before, what should I do? this morning he ate alot but vomited 3 times today and refuses to eat, and we had to manually (gently) shoot water into his mouth with a clean dropper to keep him hydrated, thank you in advance for the advice

  • Hello sir I have a black female lab of 4 years recently after blood test we found out that she is having tick fever I mean her end and platelets count were very low and I also remember removing ticks from her body..so she started to have fever like 106 degree and the doctor gave injections and drip to her along with cephalexin and iron tonic or liquid she was doing great for 1 week but again she got fever like 106 so they gave her drip and injections again what should I do..She is lethargic but eating food sometimes Kindly please help me

  • Our dog DOB is 7/4/2010 is heavy breathing after meals, makes a whistling sound ONLY when drinking or eating (head down in his bowl) more sluggish and the other night got up from our room in the middle of the night to be courteous to go to the linoleum to vomit and urinate. He also for approximately 4 months now does this wrenching hack (no vomit) out of nowhere. He does that about 1-3 times per day almost every day. Sometimes skipping a day. He is a English bulldog 74 pounds. They did bloodwork, X-ray and said he had some small spots in his lung area (could be cancer) but considering his blood work they did not think so. They said from X-ray his heart looked good (we thought CHF and age accelerating). They told us he has a cold and a slight UTI. Gave us 100mg doxycycline and a “cough tab”. Brought him home around 5:30pm yesterday. He is also exactly where we are. He seems afraid, will not eat, is frothing(bubbles around his mouth like he’s nauseous) when by of us move about he is moving his head as though he hears the sounds of us but can’t see? So he seems frightened of what the sounds of US is. He is drinking but very little. He is going to the bathroom but almost falling down the deck stairs. I don’t think this dx or treatment plan is correct. Because of COVID he went in alone. This is is normal vet but it was not is normal Doctor. Someone we or he have never seen. He is breathing heavy and rapidly and moaning slightly while laying in one spot since we got home last night.

  • Gave my dog clindamycin and after day 4 he won’t eat or drink water but now he’s slowly gone to the bathroom but not eating or having energy like before they were also pooping & eating normal before taking it but I’ve already stopped it’s been about 3 days he’s seems to drink a little more water but eat less just worried

  • I’m panicking rn…. my dog had an infection in his mouth, besides that was active and healthy.. we took him to the vet and the infection was gone but they still gave him antibiotics… the next day he went downhill… it’s been 4 days and he might not make it another day.. antibiotics definition literally says, against life… I dont know what to do.. he needs my help but we have a language barrier…. my poor bear bear… I’m trying buddy…

  • I wish I would’ve known this three weeks ago just lost my dog yesterday due to resistant antibiotic. He was only seven months he had a fever of 104 for three weeks diarrhea and an anal gland then he developed a swollen testicle. That was the size of the golf ball Zorro was a mix Chihuahua, he also developed a serious rash And 2 abscess after visiting four different vet in two weeks, nobody couldn’t give me no answers on Saturday they perform the surgery to remove the testicles I figure out the root of the rash however, five hours after surgery, he passed away if I had known that antibiotic Could kill my dog I would’ve never put him on it!!! we will always love you Zorro and I’m so sorry we couldn’t bring you back home in those six months we share together they will forever be at my heart and memory rest in peace
