Retesting for antigens is not recommended because Giardia antigens can remain present after an infection has been successfully treated, which may result in false-positives on a test.

  • Nitazoxanide (Alinia). Because it comes in a liquid form, nitazoxanide may be easier for children to swallow. Side effects may include nausea, gas, yellow eyes and brightly colored yellow urine.

There are no consistently recommended medications for giardia infection in pregnancy because of the potential for harmful drug effects to the fetus. If your symptoms are mild, your doctor may recommend delaying treatment until after the first trimester or longer. Both drugs may be given in combination if necessary. This combination is usually administered to dogs with refractory diarrhea (diarrhea that hasn’t responded to treatment). Supportive treatment with other drugs may be needed as supplemental therapy if dehydration or severe diarrhea is present.

A low-residue, highly digestible diet may help lessen loose stools during treatment. Some dogs may require follow-up tests and treatments based on their condition and severity of infection. All infected pets should be re-tested two to four weeks after completion of treatment. Your veterinarian will help determine the treatment best for your pet.

Because Giardia cysts are infective immediately when passed into the environment, feces should be removed quickly and disposed of. Infected animals should be bathed regularly to remove cysts from the hair coat.

I would be tempted to continue giving the Panacur unless told otherwise by your vet, but report the diarrhoea to them so that they can make this decision if necessary. At some point, they may want to check to ensure that fluid loss through the poo is too much. Most diarrhoea is self-limiting and will resolve in a few days; vets sometimes will reccommend a plain, bland diet in the meantime. They will, however, be on the lookout for dehydration or other matters that need their attention.
