Healthy Home Economist: How To Address Elevated Liver Enzymes?

4.5 rating based on 187 ratings

A typical ALT level is 7-56 units per liter of blood, which can be affected by various factors. A doctor can advise an individual on what their ALT levels mean. To lower elevated liver enzymes, increase folate consumption, take folic acid supplements, and get enough sleep every day. Fasting can be an effective intervention to treat disease and improve liver health. A low-protein, high-carb diet shows promise for reducing liver enzymes. Eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and fiber can help reverse fatty liver disease.

Diverse dietary patterns, such as high-protein, Mediterranean, and calorie-restriction diets and evening snacks, may reduce liver enzymes. Natural remedies, such as weight management, dietary choices, and avoiding exposure to toxins, can help boost liver health and prevent high ALT levels. In outpatients, liver issues related to alcohol, obesity, and diabetes are most likely the cause of slightly elevated liver enzyme levels.

Air pollutants may also cause liver injury and increased enzyme levels. Abnormal liver enzyme levels can be treated with dietary changes, such as splicing a rabbit gene into Devil’s vine, an indoor plant.

The liver releases several substances when it is injured. Two of these are enzymes called alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST).

There are many causes of mildly elevated ALT and AST levels. About three out of 10 people will have normal levels again if blood tests are repeated in two to four weeks. Medical conditions such as hepatitis (swelling of the liver), nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, the metabolic syndrome, and alcoholic liver disease are the more common causes. A liver enzyme known as ALT plays an important role in breaking down proteins in the digestive process. High levels of ALT in the blood can indicate liver issues. Implementing these strategies may help lower ALT levels.

Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) is an enzyme found inside liver cells. Liver enzymes, including ALT, help your liver break down proteins to make them easier for your body to absorb.

When your liver is damaged or inflamed, it can release ALT into your bloodstream. This causes your ALT levels to rise. A high ALT level can indicate a liver problem, which is why doctors often use an ALT test when diagnosing liver conditions.

Can high ALT be nothing?

It’s important to know that having a high ALT test result doesn’t necessarily mean you have a medical condition. Less than 5% of people with elevated ALT levels have severe liver conditions. Other factors can affect your ALT levels. Your provider will take into consideration several factors, including other blood test results and your medical history, when analyzing your results.

What does it mean if my alanine transaminase (ALT) is low?. Having a lower than normal ALT result is uncommon and usually isn’t a cause for concern. However, a lower than normal ALT level could indicate a vitamin B6 deficiency or chronic kidney disease.

If your ALT result is lower than what’s considered normal, your healthcare provider will likely have you retake the test or undergo further testing to make sure nothing is causing your low level.

Our ALT shows up high whenever our liver is dealing with any infection or poison or even a hard to digest food such as fried meat. It is common for them to be high in people who have recently had alcohol or paracetamol. With infections, and these can be other diseases like flu or an septic wound they go up as the liver fights back. If they are constantly in the 50 to 200 range we term the hepatitis B infection active. ALT’s range from 0 up to 3000 or so in many acute hepatitis cases. They change with every meal so it is important not to panic if they go from 20 to 45 after a few months. All scores below 45 indicate a perfectly healthy score.

GGT (gamma glutamyl transpeptidase) is elevated in those who use alcohol or toxins.

Our GST shows up high between 50 and 200 if we are often taking paracetamol or using alcohol a lot. It is often a sign of alcoholism or longer term liver damage, but can be reversed by adopting a alcohol free or toxin free lifestyle.

  • I come from a long line of centenarians, I am also Japanese, my grandparents are both in their late 90s and they always tell me that the key is moderation. These articles focus a lot of FOOD and Exercise but it never talks about the other things that are equally important: culture and religion. Asian culture focuses a lot on Family and community. We also strive to live “gently” instead of being fast and furious like the Americans do…finding peace and tranquility in tiny things like a swaying breeze and the marvels of nature. Being Buddhists and lighting incense at temples bring immense joy and pleasure, live simply and without need for narcissism and competition with one another.

  • She began this healthy diet and exercise when she was 65. That’s inspired me. Amazingly, she eats red meats, chicken, and other foods everyone eats. She is not vegan or vegetarian. In one of her Japanese articles, she emphasized keeping moving your body all day. In my Japanese neighborhood, adorable couples in the 80s run 42K marathons and climb mountains. They told me not to sit and surf the internet, watch TV, and play on your smartphone. Modern technologies make life easier, but they cause people to weaken and aging faster. Keep moving, do something that makes you physically move, be positive and happy everyday.

  • My Russian grandmother passed away when she was 92 years old. She always had two phrases in mind when we talked about food. – “Eat everything but with knowing when to stop” – “Everything is good for you if it reaches your mouth” (this is supposed to be said in a pretty cute rhyme in Russian). I miss my granny. Peace and Love everyone.

  • She’s amazing on her physical ability to do what she does, not every one can do it but depends on you will and determination, I’m 76 and I do what I think it’s good for me, exercise 7 days a week in the gym and try to eat the if possible, green vegetables, fruits and stay away from carbohydrates and meat and eat fish instead.

  • I’ve eaten natto for lunch every day (roughly) for over 25 years, most of those years living in the States (though now in Japan). Japanese food, on the whole, is far more healthy than most western diets. The train system in Japan, moreover, requires people living here to walk to the local station unless they prefer using a car, but cars are simply not necessary in much of Japan. The bus system is also excellent. As a result, Japanese people acquire exponentially more walking and related exercise than the vast majority of Americans.

  • I eat yogurt, banana and probiotics supplements everyday, the probiotics for women cured my long term chronic issue. Yakult is too sweet for me because I m into body building. Basically good diet should consists of good amount of protein, fat, micronutrients and moderate amounts of carbs (depending on your goals). We cannot follow a Japanese diet if we don’t live in Japan but a balanced diet can be achieved in any cuisine.

  • If someone has problems with controlling blood sugar, eating a whole banana at one time can be a problem. Monitor blood glucose before eating a banana and every 15 minutes thereafter. If the blood glucose goes up too much, cut back to 1/2 or even 1/4 or 1/8 of a banana. Always eat raw fruit on an empty stomach since fruit needs to quickly pass through the stomach. It is rather difficult for fruit to do that if eaten after or with other foods that require much longer digestive times.

  • “nuclear” gas from soy and cruciferous almost ended my marriage. I’ve heard it can get you fired, if you don’t go on fire yourself. Maybe if I had started when I was a kid this may not be a fatal problem today. Thanks for the info. Nothing about her marital status or its history. I hope it’s all good. Inspiring discipline.

  • Dr Michael Greger from nutritionsFacts has presented studies showing that kimshi causes stomach cancer in Korea. Miso and soya sauce do not appear to do this, nor do they increase blood pressure. Omega-3 fatty acids are better from algae, because the fish also have to absorb omega-3 fatty acids from plants and algae, as they do not produce them themselves. Fish today are contaminated with pollutants such as PCBs and heavy metals. Tuna, for example, contains mercury. So it is better to grow algae a aEat in glass jars, walnuts and dried nuts. linseed.

  • what no one mentions here is that Japan has a much higher quality of life than some places in the world. For one, it is safer than most. I live in the bay area in Ca and not even older people are safe jogging alone.another, people are courteous and respectful in Japan. And Japan has much respect for quiet and peace and they do not see anything wrong with solitude, they are not embarrassed to spend time alone . In America, people think quiet or alone is boring and unhappy.. the more noise, the better in America. The problem is most people who think quiet is bad is because they heard it from someone else. they need to imitate what social media says is the norm. All people want to do here is party and make loud noise. at all hours. No respect. No peace. another thing is people cannot listen to their music in their cars or homes without making it as loud as a club. They dont care if it bothers someone else. In Japan, they have the decency to have consideration of others.

  • She mostly eats fermented foods for a healthy gut 🤔 and if your gut is healthy you feel energetic the whole day and it’s understood if your gut isn’t healthy doesn’t matter whether you’re young/old you feel half dead because of fatigue. By the way my great grand uncle ( big brother of my grandfather) passed away at the age of 97 so i think people of that time they usually live longer because of their healthy lifestyle

  • Whether you are 92 or 192 No matter how you look No matter what you have No matter how long you live Today tomorrow you will come to an end and you’ll be in the grave God Almighty will ask you what did you do with the age you were given. You’re only here for one purpose as Allah says in the Glorious Quran Surah 51-56 Allah did not create Jinn & humankind except to worship Allah. Surah 3-185 Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your (full) compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained (his desire). And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion. Prepare yourself for this day that’s biggest achievement.

  • Oddly, Mika-san recommends ‘miso’ but heard recently that miso, with its high salt/sodium content is actually bad for you . I fact, in one Japanese region where they all live especially long lives, miso is out of their diet and that is given as one factor for their long lives. Tried ‘miso’ once- tried to buy it in a Vietnamese store and they never heard of it- but found it to be much too salty

  • I don’t think it’s what she’s eating that particularly special; it’s what she’s NOT eating. She’s not drinking soda, potato chips, candy, loads of fruit, a 1,000kcal cafe latte, watermelon, and she’s not exceeding 1500kcal a day. So in short, she’s avoiding sugar and processed foods and excess calories, which clearly goes a long way. Now if she was eating more meat she’d probably be even healthier.

  • Good 4her & God bless her, but PLEASE, do not try all this after 60 – First of all, jogging after 55 is NOT advised. Walking is FAAAR better, at any age, but particularly after the body takes longer to heal. Walking has multiple advantages & health benefits, if you walk regularly, at a good pace & enjoy it!! After listening to the first part, I decided to debunk your very first suggestion, and get outa here!! Sorry a major put off for someone who takes health & wellness just as seriously as honesty!!✌

  • Wow amazing tone. My guess is you have always had an amazing physique. Well deserved. I’m personally a bit nervous of fermented foods living in UK. But I am attempting to eat more foods that have known health benefits like bio active plain organic yoghurt and some hard cheeses that have health benefits and taste yummy. My nanny lived to 98 eating an inexpensive fresh food diet rich in fish at least 3 portions each week and walking everyday she enjoyed ballroom dancing and hardly ever consumed alcohol but enjoyed her treats tin of chocolates 😊 She had amazing legs and for her age amazing stamina. Her motto was if you dont use it you loose it and have a little of what you like.

  • I was under the impression Nattō would taste bad and I hesitated trying it when I was in Japan but as a “foodie” I HAD to try it… and it was okay 😂 and I had it again the next day and tasted even better with rice and egg ! I feel like people might just be thrown off by the texture but I like some slimy texture food so didn’t bother me

  • I am not eating Japanese style. I am not jogging 3 miles….my rt knee on my 6-3 73yr old frame had a motorcycle impact at 70mph. Good tips. I do get up at 4am and go walking outside in the cool. I also avoid +distrust doctors. My grandmother, father and mother all died within a month from unnecessary surgery to pad the hospital account.

  • age number should never be hindrance to do what you want to…i am waiting just to get my bulging disk treatment to get back to my upper body work out, its the world which has problems, and I honestly don’t know why as long as your energies and mental faculties are fine …. it’s so hot today that one feel like “Boobmelt sandwich on the Go!

  • Natto is difficult for westerners to tolerate and many opt for the pill nattokinase which has benefits but misses some key aspects like being a filling meat substitute. It’s the only vegetable that satiates me like meat, better than other nuts and beans which can make you feel full but not satiated and cause digestive problems. But be warned, a lot of the natto in Asian groceries are GMO unless its says organic and you have to be able to read Japanese when a non-organic natto says non-GMO.

  • Start in the morning fixing all this food and it is all you will get done during the day. You better not have a job. Some people feel like getting up early but as for me no way I can get up at that time. My feet are killing me so not much running or walking. My back hurts so no weights though I lifted for over 20 years. It is her genes and genes only.

  • My first cuz was 96, (now in La Jolla)once a doctor in the Philippines,i am 65)…btw I just met my daughter whose grandma in law ( a pure Japanese immigrant first generation))whose age is 94 is now losing some of her memory but still mobile…here in CA by the way…I watch smart tv y mainly sports…got exercise tools but they are too weighty 😂

  • I literally had sleepless nights after visiting dairy farm and witnessing what a horrific life the poor cows go through. They are pain inseminated every 6 months so that the calf is born. Calves are taken away immediately without a single drop of milk. Male calves are killed in the slaughter house on that very day. This process continues for some years till the cow is completely exhausted and later sold for meat. That’s the milk we consume and use in our puja 😞. I witnessed the 2 day old calves taken to the slaughter house and mother cow running behind him. I will never forget that day, the day I turned vegan.

  • 1) Affirmations. Affirmations are seeds. They may not be true at that time but plant a seed. Look at the mirror first thing in the morning and say I love you and good affirmations 2) Habits. Good habits build your strength 3) Gratitude. Gratitude for gifts you already have opens the door for more gifts. 4) Believe in what you want. Belief opens the door to the impossible

  • I needed this today i want my bad habbits to stop I don’t like doing things then they get after me because of my mistakes I had to do laundry again at the laundry mat and my boyfriend got mad because of the mistakes I do but I’m going keep hearing this until I can overcome and get rid of my simplest mistakes I do ove rand over again

  • So true. It really does work and it is powerful. The Cosmos is reflective. And your whole life experience, Is YOU, and created by YOU. Unyet the issue we are facing as a collective, is so many people dismiss this technique as woo woo, or hippy new age crap. It isn’t at all. And this technique is actually very ancient. Its not new, or has only just been discovered. Its very old, and it really works. But like I say, people dismiss it. Mostly because people are traumatised, and stressed out, as a result of modern day living. If we could get into a groove of taking the first steps toward seeking. Seeking a healing process, of self discovery, then recognition of the reflective nature of ourself. And then shadow work and trauma clearance. And then finally true self empowerment and affirmation. Then the whole world could be an entirely different place, over night.

  • Thank you for sharing and helping us focus on what is important in ourselves and for reminding us to share love and kindness with others. I know Louise Hay is with each and everyone of us. She has helped us in believing in ourselves. I know that she lives even today in each person that chooses to believe that we can manifest healing and love and anything we deserve. I believe in Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior and I believe that Louise Hay was here with Gods blessing to share her vision. 😊 Happy life happy heart

  • Regarding about her example If someone gave you a present which it happens you don’t like the color or it doesn’t fit and Louis suggests instead of saying, “Oh I hate that color” or “It doesn’t firt”. Louis suggest that don’t say that so someone will still care to give you a present. In my own view, much better be honest to someone who gave an effort to give you a present and tell them frankly with warm and honest words that, “Thank you for this wonferful present. I do appreciate it so much but I will be happy If next time you will give me something like this but I prefer this kind of color and this kind of size. (SAY EXACTLY WHAT COLOR YOU PREFER AND WHAT SIZE). Because this is exactly what I like and this size will for fit on me for sure. But still, I do appreciate your effort. I will keep it. Thank you. Next time, you will receive the gift you would really and exactly like. Don’t fake it just because they don’t want you them to get hurt. Honesty is still the best. You will receive the best gift If you will be honest and tell what exactly you would like to receive. People will respect you also for being honest and It is good on their part because their money is not wasted on buying things that they didn’t know you would never like.
