How To Gently Inform Your Lecturer That You Have Diarrhea?

5.0 rating based on 64 ratings

To inform your boss about your diarrhea, you can use an alternative word or explanation or be vague about why you are not well enough to come in. If you are comfortable using the word “diarrhea”, you can say something like “I am very sorry I missed class; I was very sick” or “Sorry I missed class, I had diarrhea”.

When communicating with a medical professional, it is important to consider their audience and opt for more formal language if necessary. Be sympathetic and understanding when communicating about diarrhea, whether in a formal setting or a more casual environment. If you are okay with using the actual word and don’t mind your boss knowing your full symptoms, it is okay to come right out.

If you are not feeling well, “I’m not feeling well” should be enough, unless you are describing symptoms to a medical professional or someone responsible for your well-being. “I am very sorry I missed class; I was very sick” is acceptable, while “Sorry I missed class, I had diarrhea” is not.

When emailing your professor, make it short and simple without sharing too many details about your illness. Use a professor’s email template to let them know that you are going to “dispose the contents of my intestines”. If you are okay with using the actual word and don’t mind your boss knowing your full symptoms, it is okay to come right out.

In addition to calling in sick, you can also use phrases like “I’ve got an upset stomach” (polite), “I’ve got a stomach bug” (polite and vague), or “I’ve got a dodgy belly” (informal). If the diarrhea is related to a known food poisoning, you can bring this information to work.

We have all wrestled with diarrhea at some point or another. It’s a shared experience that none of us want to share. But, there isn’t …

How to ask leave for diarrhea?

How do I say I am having stomach problems?

2. Keep it general. You don’t need to say the specific condition you have, if you don’t feel comfortable. Rather, feel free to leave it as “digestive issues,” “cramps,” or a “GI condition,” as that’s usually the most detail that people want or need to hear anyway. You can share as much or as little as you’d like.

3. Explain how it can impact your plans or time together. Having digestive symptoms likely means frequent trips to the bathroom, saying “no” to certain events because you don’t feel well, or other disruptions in how you spend time together. Make it clear how your issues or condition might require them to show extra empathy or flexibility so that you can feel more at ease when going out in public or when you need to stay in.

4. Think about what you’ll say ahead of time. Having a list of talking points or making a mental note of what you want to say and how you want to say it can help the conversation go smoothly. While the script will vary for each person, keeping things short and sweet can often be the best way to go. You can say things like, “I’m doing what I can to control my digestive symptoms, but sometimes they act up or get worse unexpectedly.” This doesn’t need to be a spontaneous discussion. You should share when and how you feel most comfortable.

How do you say that you are having diarrhea?

Diarrhea means having a loose, watery stool during a bowel movement. It’s common in both children and adults and usually goes away on its own within a few days.

How is diarrhea treated?. Usually, you can get rid of diarrhea at home. Over-the-counter (OTC) medicines for diarrhea, like bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol® or Kaopectate®), often help people feel better quickly. You’ll need to see a healthcare provider for diarrhea that doesn’t improve or that happens alongside symptoms of severe diarrhea.

  • Antibiotics or antiparasitics. These drugs kill infection-causing germs.
  • Medications that treat chronic conditions. Treating underlying conditions that cause diarrhea, like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and IBS, can help.
  • Probiotics. Probiotics introduce good bacteria into your gut to combat diarrhea. Your healthcare provider may suggest you try them. Always talk to your provider before starting a probiotic or any supplement.

Can I stop diarrhea without taking anti-diarrhea medicine?. You can often get rid of acute diarrhea through lifestyle changes you can make at home.

How do you professionally say you have diarrhea?

A good way to phrase this is: “I have a GI bug, and I won’t be able to come to work.” If the diarrhea is related to a known food poisoning, you can bring this up, too. Just know, most bosses don’t want or need to know any details about the diarrhea. Keep your communication here clear and concise.

Can I tell my professor I have diarrhea?

Professors do care about you (really), but you should keep conversations professional or neutral. Don’t ask questions about their personal life unless it’s something they have brought up first. Also, while it may be important to talk a bit about your personal life, keep in mind that these are the first professional relationships of your life, so try and be professional in what you tell your professor. “I am very sorry I missed class; I was very sick” is acceptable. “Sorry I missed class, I had diarrhea” (as one email I received said) is not.

Remember that if you are having very serious personal issues, it may be best to ask your professor about campus counseling options and services. Your professor is your professor, not your friend, your priest, or your psychologist. Your professor is your champion, because they want you to succeed, but they have a different role than counselors or social workers. They may feel a rapport with you – I do have my favorite students – but they have an obligation to all of their students, so don’t monopolize all their time.

In my experience, the students who made the most effort to communicate professionally and appropriately were the most successful. It may be really difficult to navigate the professor-student relationship, especially if you’re the first in your family to go to college. However, this is no reason to be intimidated. Even the most famous and renowned professors are still complete dorks in the real world. Well, maybe Indiana Jones wasn’t. but he was the only one. And he’s probably not your professor.. I hear he’s on sabbatical anyway.

Talk to your own professor today. See if any of our tweed-wearing nerds can help you with your assignments.
