A gentle ointment like petroleum jelly can provide a barrier to protect your skin, making it a better choice than medicated creams that can cause dryness and irritation. Soaking in warm water can also help. However, polyethylene glycol 3350 with electrolytes (the active ingredient in Colyte) may cause some unwanted effects, which may need medical attention. If any of these side effects occur, it is important to consult your doctor immediately.
GaviLyte is an oral solution made from polyethylene glycol and electrolytes that cleans out your bowel before a colonoscopy. If you experience rash, itching, hoarseness, trouble breathing or swallowing, or large, hive-like swelling on the face, stop taking Colyte. Use petroleum jelly or vitamin A or vitamin D cream, reapplying a thin layer after each bowel movement. If inflammation is severe, use creams and oils like Vaseline to prevent or soothe irritation.
Diarrhea can occur from drinking Colyte, so it is essential to drink plenty of clear fluids and the bowel prep solution. If diarrhea occurs, stop taking Colyte. Isolated cases of urticaria (hives), rhinorrhea (nasal discharge), and dermatitis (skin inflammation) can also be treated with a moisture barrier like petroleum jelly or over-the-counter Desitin or Preparation H.

📹 YOUR DOCTOR’S FIVE SECRET TIPS TO BEAT THE COLONOSCOPY PREP!
Dr. Fred Gandolfo, a board certified gastroenterologist, shares 5 secret tips to make your colonoscopy prep much easier! DON’T …
When do you stop taking Colyte?
- Begin your bowel preparation by drinking 2 liters of Colyte (about ½ of the jug).
- Drink about one 8 ounce glass every 10 minutes until 2 liters have been consumed. This should take you about 2 hours to complete. If you feel full or nauseated by drinking this solution then slow down and finish it before midnight. It is very important to drink 2 liters of Colyte the evening prior to your exam.
- You can also drink any other clear liquids after you have finished 2 liters of you prep until midnight. Sometimes it is easier to drink if chilled or over ice or through a straw. Some pharmacies also have flavor packets if requested.
- Finish drinking the remaining 2 liters of Colyte. It is important that you have finished the remaining 2 liters of your colon preparation at least 4 hours prior to your scheduled procedure time. You will need to get up early to finish the remaining 2 liters of your colon preparation. It is important you have finished drinking the prep 4 hours prior to your scheduled colonoscopy.
- ABSOLUTELY NOTHING BY MOUTH AFTER THIS TIME.
- If you are taking medications for high blood pressure or heart disease, it is important that you take them early in the morning on the day of your exam with a sip of water.
- Have someone drive you home from the procedure
- you may be here 2 to 3 hours. Please make sure your driver will be available by phone if they are unable to wait.
- If you are of child bearing years, you will need to perform a urine pregnancy test prior to sedation. This will be done at the Surgery Center.
This formulation of bowel preparation has shown to be better tolerated by patients and produce better results than other bowel preparations.;
How long does it take for colon prep to wear off?
What Should Poop Look Like During Colonoscopy Prep?. The effects of bowel prep medication can begin as soon as 30 minutes to an hour after your first dose and can last up to 16 hours. However, most people do not continue to experience diarrhea after they go to bed the night before the test.
Some people are required to wake in the middle of the night to take a second dose of laxatives at least four to six hours before their procedure. It depends on the type of bowel prep medications you use and your scheduled procedure time.
Generally, unless you have an underlying health condition, your stool will begin as a brown color with its normal consistency (solid or semi-solid for most individuals) and gradually lighten and soften. As you continue the prep and liquid diet, your stool will become semi-solid or very soft, watery or diarrhea-like, and finally transition to a yellow or clear liquid.
Can you be allergic to Colyte?
A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching /swelling (especially of the face/ tongue /throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.
This is not a complete list of possible side effects. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088 or at fda. gov/medwatch.
What helps a sore bum from colonoscopy prep?
The preparation for a colonoscopy involves several steps to ensure a successful procedure. First, take a 30-minute break from the preparation mixture to keep it in your body and cleanse your colon. Chew gum or suck on hard candies between glasses and brush your teeth and tongue after every glass of prep. Sit in with good entertainment and have good reading material to pass the time.
To combat a sore bottom, use a soothing ointment like A and D ointment or Vaseline during the colonoscopy prep. Baby wipes can also be used for comfort, but be cautious as they can sting.
Some bleeding is normal during the colonoscopy prep, but if you notice significant bleeding or blood clots, consult your doctor. Once you arrive for the procedure, you’ll be given intravenous (IV) sedation to keep you comfortable.
Expect gas or bloating after the screening, which is short-lived and can be passed by lying on your belly. Avoid greasy or spicy foods and gradually eat high-fiber foods after the procedure. Add yogurt to your diet for a few days to repopulate healthy bacteria in your digestive tract.
If you have a biopsy or a polyp removed, you might experience some blood in your stool, which should last a few days. If you notice significant bleeding or blood clots, consult your doctor.
In conclusion, taking these steps is essential for maintaining good health and reducing the chances of developing colon cancer.
How do you know when to stop colonoscopy prep?
I started vomiting after taking the preparation, can I still have my procedure?. Most often YES. If you were able to consume at least 75% of the preparation and you are passing clear liquid bowel movements, then the preparation is likely adequate. If you are passing yellow or brown liquid stool, it still may be OK. If you are passing solid stool or if you were able to drink less than 50-75% of the preparation your procedure will likely need to be rescheduled. Please call our office or exchange to cancel.
Will the preparation irritate my hemorrhoids or skin?. Usually not. In some cases, the diarrhea that is caused by the preparation can secondarily irritate hemorrhoids. Using moist wipes (baby wipes) instead of toilet paper may help prevent irritation of hemorrhoids or your skin. If your skin is becoming irritated, you can use a moisture barrier such as petroleum jelly or over the counter Desitin or Preparation H to help protect it.
When will I stop moving my bowels?. Within a couple of hours of finishing the preparation. However, people’s responses vary, and some will continue to pass liquid bowel movements right up until the time of the procedure. As long as what is coming out is pure liquid it usually is not a problem.
Is it OK not to finish colonoscopy prep?
I seem to be all ‘cleaned out’ but haven’t finished my preparation. Do I need to finish it?. Yes. You must follow the preparation instructions provided to you to help ensure an accurate and thorough examination.
Can I use cream during the preparation to help with anal irritation I’m experiencing?. Yes, you may apply Desitin, A+D Ointment, Vaseline or any other cream.
Can I have my colonoscopy if I am having my menstrual period?. Yes.
Is it normal for stomach to hurt after colonoscopy prep?
Intake of preparations which intensely cleanse the intestines in the process of colonoscopy preparation is almost always accompanied by varying degrees of dyspeptic symptoms, discomfort and abdominal pain.
In this study, the incidence of trivial symptoms, such as discomfort; nausea; feelings of fullness and bloating or transient moderate abdominal pain, was not taken into consideration. The analysis included only those events and side effects which were reflected in nursing reports and medical records.
3. Results. Figure 4 presents the prevalence of adverse effects occurring during the analysis of 9962 initiated bowel preparation regimens that required medical intervention at the ward, and/or implementation of specialized medical procedures.
Does bowel prep cause pain?
Most people tolerate bowel preparation very well with only minor discomfort, however others can find the process more challenging. Stomach cramps, nausea and vomiting are the most common issues that patients experience.
How do I stop irritation during colonoscopy prep?
Drinking a Liquid Prep Mix it with Crystal Light or something similar. Lemon and orange seem to be favorites. Drink it very cold. Drink it with a straw aimed at the back of your mouth where you won’t taste it as much.
How can I make bowel prep less painful?
Chill it, flavor it and drink it through a straw. Many people find that it’s easier to drink their prep when it’s cold. Drinking through a straw also may help. If your prep is unflavored, you can add Crystal Light, Kool-Aid powder or mix it with water and lemon. However, stick with lemon, lime and orange flavors and avoid liquids with red or purple dye as they can interfere with colonoscopy results. If you’re using a carbonated beverage to mix your prep, let it go flat before drinking it.
If your doctor asks you to do a split prep (meaning that you drink your prep in two separate doses several hours apart), it’s okay to use different flavors for each dose. After you drink your prep, you can wash it down with another clear liquid or suck on a lemon or hard candy to get rid of any aftertaste.
Stay close to the bathroom. Once you start your prep, bowel movements can happen suddenly—you’ll want to stay close to your bathroom. Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing and make sure you have things to help you pass the time such as books, magazines, a tablet with your favorite movies or apps or a crossword puzzle.
What to do if allergic to colonoscopy prep?
Suprep Bowel Prep Kit side effects. Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Worsening gout symptoms ( joint pain, redness, or swelling).

OMG This just popped up. Dr. Gandolfo literally saved my life. I had colon cancer and needed reconstruction surgery to take 12 inches of my colon out. My artery was nicked and I was hemorrhaging to death. My surgeon called in Dr. Gandolfo to put a clip on my artery and stop the bleeding. Dr. Gandolfo saved my life that day. I still go to him. Thank you so much Doctor. I’m so glad I can now tell the world.
I’m doing my prep now, and my colonoscopy is scheduled for tomorrow. Thankfully, I watched this article twice about a month ago, and came back to watch it again for a little encouragement. I haven’t started running to the bathroom yet, so I’m okay so far. I’m just so darn hungry, and been eating lime Jello all day. Please wish me luck everyone😊🌹
One thing to remember from childhood – if you hate the taste of something, hold your nose. That’s how I made it through the prep – held my nose while drinking the prep, then continued to hold it for a bit while I drank the chaser (I let go half way through the chaser). It made it all much more bearable.
My father beat the colon cancer twice in his life and died peacefully at the age of 90. He was stage 3 when he was diagnosed the first time when he was 63 years old. All my sisters and I now get routine colonoscopies every 4-5 years and one thing for sure; chill that prep! It’s way easier that way. Thanks Dr Gandolfo for this article!
It saved my life in 2012! There are worse things than colonoscopy. I had 12 chemo treatments. I wasn’t as sick as the doctor expected. It was an experience I do not regret. If the only help I can be to anyone is to encourage them to keep on keeping on. Keep going it can get better. I have a grandson to love 10 yrs later.
I gotta say this: my colonoscopy was no problem! My doctor told me to decrease my eating gradually over a period of–I think–four days, so that in the last day or two I was having only liquids. I was expecting to have an awful time after I drank the Nulytely or whatever that was. Nope. Nothing disgusting, nothing dramatic happened. Then I went in and felt like I had a mini-vacation under warm blankets in the hospital. Anyway, thought that might help someone.
My daddy died from colon cancer, so it’s been very important to me to have a colonoscopy. I was 45 when he died and my dr recommended another in 5 yrs. So that went on for about 15 yrs, but when i turned 60 I told my dr at least every 3 yrs. Last week i did my colon prep, but your body doesn’t cooperate like it used to. The prep didn’t work this time. Its happened before, so I ‘ll have to do it all over again as soon as the dr can work me in. I really don’t mind after seeing what my daddy went thru. I’ve nearly always had polyps removed too. That prep is worth one day for the rest of your life.
The tip about using zink oxide or Desitin to protect the bottom is great to know. One motivating thought for me was knowing if I did a good prep, I wouldn’t cause the doc to cancel my procedure. The thought of having to go through the prep again….was the clincher! If you’re worried you might leak en route to the colonoscopy office/clinic/hospital: buy a box of disposable underpants. You don’t want to leak as you dash at home to the toilet. Take 2 with you to your procedure. After the procedure, you will want to rest up and eat lightly. I went home and slept. I’m so grateful my daughter drove me to and from the appointment. She took good care of me! ❤️
Even though I’m a healthcare, professional, my upcoming colonoscopy was making me nervous… I’m so careful with my diet that the idea of ingesting the prep was really causing me anxiety. I happen to find your article and love it! I laughed all the way through it and feel so much better! Just seeing you taking us through the prep deescalated the whole thing for me. I’m ready to face the prep and procedure with equanimity and humor. Thank you for setting the time! I know I’ll remember your facial expressions as I’m drinking the prep! 🤣Thanks so much Doc!! Really great work here. 🙂
I have a family history so I’ve been doing tests since I was 30. I’m now 57. The easiest prep is miralax mixed in Gatorade and ducalax pills. It does get old and it’s is hard BUT it’s the least gross of all the preps I’ve tried. The actual test is not bad at all. You will be knocked out. Good luck to all testing!
I’ve had several colonoscopies over the years as one who was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in my 30’s, so I’ve gotten pretty good at it. Something I do to mask the taste of the prep is to suck on a wint-o-green or spearmint lifesaver prior to and during the time I consume the prep. The mint coats your tongue and the roof of your mouth and really helps the prep go down much easier. Plus you still have the residual flavor of the mint which helps to prevent gag reflex. Additionally, a box of aloe personal cleansing wipes can be your best friend. Best of luck with your procedure.
Had my second colonoscopy done in August and was dreading the prep based on y first experience. While describing the nausea I experienced with the first one, the scheduler suggested the “lite” prep kit, which was just the same flavored battery acid in a concentrated form. Told them just thinking about the prep was making me feel sick, they then mentioned prep kit in tablet form.. Was informed that you still had to drink lots of water, but the laxative was taken in 2 rounds of 12 tablets taken 1-2 minutes apart. Sign me up! Asked why I was never offered this option before and should have expected the answer – insurance doesn’t pay for it…. Tablet form is $140 compared to $35 for the nasty liquid form. Ended up getting a coupon sent with my Rx for discounted rate and it ended up being $60 or so. Would have spent whatever it took for the improvement it made. Process and results were the same. I used a kitchen timer to monitor the rate I took the pills (which are large – bigger than a daily multivitamin) and drank the required amount of water, as well as the other small laxative pills and antacids needed. Like the liquid prep, waited a couple of hours and the magic happens. Felt the tablet regimen might not have cleansed as well as the liquid one, but it did not make any difference to the doc performing the procedure. Bottom Line: If you have the choice and can afford it, avoid the liquid prep suggested in this article and go the tablet route. Less disgusting, but still does the job needed.
I’ve had colon cancer & several colonoscopies. I’ve never taken that prep stuff, even before my first ever colonoscopy. I knew I’d never keep it down. So I “fasted” for 3 days beforehand – made a huge pot of vegetable stew & siphoned off the liquid from it whenever I felt hungry. That way I was getting nutrients & liquids. I also got a couple of bottles of magnesium citrate (a laxative) & drank those, alternating with Sprite or 7-Up. A sip of mag cit, then a swig of soda. Until the mag cit was finished. It tastes a bit like slightly salty Sprite or 7-Up. So between the “fasting” for a few days & the laxative, my colon is totally clear & I can tolerate preparing for the procedure. That’s just my way of doing it.
Thank you for this article!!! I just had my successful colonoscopy today. I am so thankful for your tip of having some apple juice along with the prep solution. I took a sip of the apple juice to get a good taste in my mouth first and then alternated a couple sips of the solution followed by a couple of the juice with a few couple minute breaks here and there, and got it all down. I started with it cold, too. I did another thing that helped me get cleaned out, too. Instead of starting my clear diet sometime on Wednesday for my Thursday test, Tuesday night at dinner I started that diet. When I got to lunchtime on Wednesday and had my chicken broth, Jello, and apple juice, I started running to the bathroom and emptying out then. I started the prep solution around 4:30pm. By around 10:00-10:30pm everything was already clear or just yellow. I was all cleaned out. The NP said I would know that the prep was successful when this happened. What a blessing!!! Since everything was clear or slightly yellow liquid only, I did not have to go through the torture of the second prep early in the morning. I know I would not have been able to use the apple juice with that one. **I am not giving advice for people to skip a prep step **
One “pro tip” I didn’t see anyone mention yet: The repeated rounds of diarrhea, and subsequent showers/cleaning, may irritate your anal region during the prep process. Therefore, my trick is to apply 40% zinc oxide rash cream preemptively before each toilet “session.” Also, it helps to maintain some perspective while you’re drinking the prep fluids. I drink that stuff like my life depends on it, because some day it very well might. That attitude helps maximize your motivation and focus, as well as your gastroenterologist’s ability to do his/her job for you. Lastly, for those going through the procedure for the first time, be assured that once the prep is complete, the worst is over. Basically, all you have to do is show up, take a nice nap while the good doctor is doing his/her thing, and then go out and treat yourself to a nice big breakfast!
I personally like the ‘miralax and sports drink’ prep. I like having control over the flavor. I prefer less volume, so prefer the prep that uses the nasty nasty tasting Mag citrate to the larger volume one that just uses the PEG and bisacodyl. The important thing to keep in mind is that there are lots of different bowel preps, all of which work. So if one fails for you then try another. Good gelatin (not pre-mix, but apple juice firmed up with pure gelatin) is a nice way to ward off hunger during the ‘clear liquids’ period. I am also a rectal cancer survivor, and I wouldn’t wish my journey on my worst enemy. Get scoped!
Okay, I have to say the doctor’s explanation, humor, and ENCOURAGEMENT in this article pushed me to finish the last dose of my prep. Not long ago I had decided to abandon the last 1/8 of my prep liquid. I feel more confident about the potential benefits of taking this all the way! And for anyone reading this, the stuff really does taste awful and there were more than a couple of times when I thought I might vomit. My teeth are sensitive to cold, but it was still much easier to drink the solution cold(er). One thing not discussed here or elsewhere was the fact that the bile/acids that exit as your colon is cleansed eventually leads to a burning sensation. I was grateful for our biday, but for those without one, be SURE to rinse and dry yourself thoroughly after you go each time! If not, don’t say you weren’t warned 😅!
Love the sense of humor! My husband had 7 polyps the first time he had a colonoscopy at age 53, 23 years ago. One of those polyps was almost cancerous. He’s had several colonoscopies since and is still making polyps, so he’s having another procedure next spring, only one year after his last. Thankfully he’s not had cancer, but his sister who is 10 years younger than he was just diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer last month. She’s beginning chemo this week. Thanks for the article! That stuff IS awful! Hope your test results were great!
This article was very helpful for me and I so thank you. When I’m stressed about a procedure half my brain goes on vacation. Just reading the directions is confusing, I’m so serious! This article walked me visually though the process ( which is different that the last time). Mom died of colon cancer. This is my fourth colonospy and you’d think I’d have it down. I do NOT have it down. For some, and I’ll bet plenty, this is traumatizing. So appreciate your humor, encouragement, ideas, and coaching. Today is Saturday. Procedure is Monday. Whadaya wanna bet I don’t watch multiple times? You’re a pretty funny guy, even if I’m not laughing at anything for the next couple days!
Colon cancer took 3 of my grandparents, and was suspected but never confirmed in my Dad before he passed at the age of 54, I am 41, have had bowel issues of my own for the past 10 years, and im finally getting my first colonoscopy in 2 days. Its very scary, but I know its for a good reason. Thank you for the tips in this article. The chaser drink is a good idea. I will be keeping my prep in a cooler on ice to keep it as cold as possible. I have a giant jug with powder, PEG 3350, which as far as I know is basically Miralax and powdered gatorade… but its 4 liters to drink! Eek. Anyone whos willing to send prayers my way, I will greatly appreciate it. 🙏
Thank you so much for these tips. Was scheduled for a colonoscopy last year; put it off until this year as the plandemic has ‘calmed’. I’ll check with the Pharmacist re sips of apple juice or Ginger Ale chaser to make the taste less repugnant! Golytely was provided last time and it was up and down to the bathroom all night long and into the early morning. I ate leafy green salads the day before and drank Ginger tea thereafter. Procedure was performed at 9:00 a.m. the next morning . Glad I was first; had I.V. placed just in case Versed was needed to calm me from of any anxiety. Was able to observe 3 tiny polyps removed (benign: non-cancerous). No complications noted. Now I will schedule this next one soon, loaded with additional helpful tips. 🙏❤️😊
I needed to see this article. I’m due for my 5 year follow-up to my first colonscopy and have been procrastinating it. I’ll make the call on Monday. As for the prep, my trick was to hold my nose while chugging it. I never tasted a thing and got through the enormous amount pretty quickly. For the procedure itself, best sleep I had in a while. Gee, I may be looking forward to it now that I recall that part.
Last colonoscopy I used the pills instead of the liquid concoction. It is easier, although you still have to drink liquids with it. My tendency is to throw up. My secret I learned last time was: A) Stay sitting upright instead of laying down and drinking. This allows gas to come up and not make you nauseous. B) Drink Ginger Ale, but make sure it isn’t flat and it is cold. The bubbles help you to burp thus helping to keep the liquid down. C) Chew gum to get the gas up in between doses. Last time the first dose went well, but I layed down on the second dose, used flat, warm Ginger Ale and I threw up because of gas build up. By the way, the pills are much cheaper now than they used to be.
Well, it all depends upon the prep that the GI recommends. After 5 colonoscopies, I have this down. My GI recommends Miralax. You can use whatever clear liquid to mix it with. I found that using cristal light is the best. I drink it at room temp and use a straw. The first 16 oz goes down pretty well. The second 16 oz is always a struggle, especially to get the last of it down. I find out that if you start feeling nauseous or full, back off on the timing between sips. The goal is to clean you out, not to drink it all down in one full gulp. You will absolutely know when you have achieved the desired results. Good luck!
Chugging worked best for me. Started at 5, was all done by 11:30 and sleeping peacefully. I followed the pre-prep dietary guidelines religiously, and it was all no big deal. Having been through cancer treatments and having my elbow taken apart and reconstructed I have to say, I’d take a colonoscopy any day over other things.
I just went through a colonoscopy this past Wednesday. Tuesday was my prep. I started the prep earlier than indicated. I took the Gatorade prep which isn’t nearly as bad. I arrived early at the hospital, got checked in early, I had pre registration that Monday. The gastroenterologist took me earlier than my scheduled appointment which was good. Because of my age I don’t have to go through it for 10 years. By that time I may not even be alive. I couldn’t finish all my prep but didn’t have to the way I got cleaned out. All went well! All the hospital staff are excellent. I was just extremely tired after. Sleep is the only remedy for that!
I’ve done this several times. My least difficult method was a follows. Mix the solution into ice water. Use a straw and put end of straw as far back in throat as is comfortable. Drink steadily/nonstop about a fifth or quarter of the mixture (or less if necessary). Sip a bit of plain water and pause for 5 – 10 minutes. Repeat until all gone. Keys: cold as possible, use straw to minimize mixture touching taste buds on tongue.
I’ve been getting colonoscopies every 3 yrs for some time now so here’s my 2 cents: 1- put EVERYTHING in the fridge the the day(s) before to get it good and cold. 2- I use a bendy straw and position it as far back in my mouth as possible. It’s take a bit of practice to get the position/suction right but less of the mouth and taste buds are involved so it’s slightly less nasty. 3- Be prepared: whatever flavor you choose to take the edge off…is a flavor you’re probably going to avoid afterwards because of the association: choose wisely..
Couple great points. 1) cold. Absolutely. 2) chaser. Yup….I did several gulps and then chased. I used mountain dew and it was fine. Only thing tough was it fills you up! Also the day before prep day I ate very light meals…eggs, etc……then day of was much easier……Doctor was extremely pleased with how clean everything was. Oh, and no polyps!! I got the 10 year sentence!! Oh, that was about 9 years ago 😳
Excellent presentation with sense of humor which helps patients to remember well and to understand of how important bowel prep to follow the instruction correctly in order to get the ultimate good result of medical procedure! Such good doctor as you is rare and hard to find God bless! Kim of California
One of the smartest things I’ve done in recent years was to add a bidet to my toilets. At the start of the pandemic TP was become quite scarce in my area so I decided to try the bidet in an attempt to reduce use of TP. It took some getting used to the cold water but I’ll never go back to just TP. Then during prep for a colonoscopy last month the bidet really paid off. No more sore tushy from frequent wiping for me. The water rinse was perfect for the frequent trips to the bathroom during the prep.
When my dad had to do a colonoscopy he was instructed to take a certain size of Miralax and mix it in with enough flavored clear Gatorade of his choice, then refrigerate it he was instructed to take a glass of it every 15 minutes until empty. He was also instructed if he didn’t have a bowel movement within the first couple of hours that he was also supposed to take a Dulcolax with it as well. It tasted good and it worked like a charm
I had my first Colonoscopy a couple years ago and it went fine! They prescribed Colyte for me, and a few special instructions, since I’m diabetic. I was actually glad I opted to stay awake for the procedure and watched it all on a big TV they had where I could view. After sitting on the toilet for most of the previous day, I was clean as a whistle. I even correctly picked out the point where my appendix used to be! Glad to find out that my colon was polyp-free… and even see it for myself!
Definitely get checked, I found out at my first colonoscopy that I was diagnosed with stage two colon cancer, I was 39. It is happening more and more often in younger people. Pay attention to your body and loaders with the same to you. Get it checked out. Do not shy away from the prep. Yes I agree cold prep is so much better than hot trip and also using protection around the room room helps with your rotation. Do you get checked, mine was on the verge of turning into stage three which would mean spreading❤ to other parts of the body.
Thank you very much, Dr. Gandolfo. You gave very good tips. I’ve been dreading The prep part of the colonoscopy procedure because is very intimidating but I always follow and obey common sense and logic and I know and understand that it has to be done. I have been going in and out of doctor’s appointments this year for other health issues. I had d my gallbladder taken out a month and a half ago and at the follow-up visit, my doctor told me that he was going to refer me to get the colonoscopy procedure since I am 55 years and I never had it before. Your article is very informative and helpful, but the most important part is that the article is very inspirational and motivational. I can tell you are a great doctor and most importantly you are an empathetic person and very understanding. Thank you again, doctor Gandolfo.
I have had a colonoscopy every three years since my first in 2009. The first one I had NuLytely—which was pretty awful. Polyps have been found each time. For all my subsequent procedures I have had a two day prep consisting of Miralax mixed with Smartwater or Propel. I refrigerate it in a pitcher. It is completely flavorless and the electrolytes really help. In addition I take Dulcilax or Milk of Magnesia or a bottle of Magnesium Citrate. It is completely doable. ASK your gastroenterologist if he/she is ok with a Miralax prep. Lots of doctors do this.
Had my second one in November. I was more worried about beating the fast than the prep. My tips: Schedule the test for a Monday or Tuesday morning so you have at least three days full days off work, including test day (assuming you’re a M-F, 8-5er). Doc put me on a 36 hour fast starting at midnight so stuff your face from 11:30 to midnight. Stay up all night perusal movies. Sleep all day; I woke up at 4 PM. I was allowed clear broth until 5 PM so I did some of that. Drink the prep, then, you know. Bed at a decent hour. Up early for dose two, then, you know. Check-in at the doctor. Whenever someone asks how you’re doing, say “GRUMPY!” Nap/test. Seek and destroy/decimate and bankrupt an all-you-can eat breakfast bar. The prep I was given this time came pre-mixed in to small (6 oz? bottles) and tasted like a berry milkshake. It was actually quite tasty and was very easy to drink over 5 to 10 minutes but seemed to take some time (~ 1 hour or more) to work; I was starting to worry it wasn’t working. The “effects” seemed to linger for a couple of hours too. When I had my first test 5 years ago, I had a prep that came as a powder and had to be mixed up into a 32 ounce dose, drinking 8 oz every 15 minutes. Stuff tasted like really sweet Gatorade with roughly the consistency of Guinness…not too hard to drink at first, but choking down the last few ounces, especially dose #2 was tough. Oh, and I could feel it working inside of 20 minutes, seemingly turning everything in it’s path to water.
Just wanted to share this. It’s therapeutic. I’ve had at least 4 colonoscopies. Other than the nasty prep, I was out during the procedures. The last one, I had a very sadistic Dr. His name is Diablo (doesn’t that mean devil?) I was also having an endoscopy. The problem was, I was not sedated!!! I was awake for both of the procedures & he had the gall to scold me for gagging.😞🤨 & I was trying to ask why I was awake & he told me to stop talking, once the tube was shoved down my throat, he told me to stop moving… it was hell. During the colonoscopy I was facing the screen so I even saw my polyps & the removal of some for biopsy’s. There was really something wrong with that whole mess. 🤷🏻♀️ please make sure your Dr has your best interest at heart. There were 3 people in that room with me & they all knew I was totally awake. No one prepared me for that. I’d sure like to know why. At the time, I was too upset to ask & there really wasn’t anyone To ask. I just wanted out of there.
I had my first colonoscopy this week. I had a whole 4 liters of prep liquid to drink (Colyte), split into two, 2-hour periods (one the evening before, the other starting 5 hours before the scope itself). And the prep also started with 10 mg of bisacodyl, to get things moving I guess. I will say that the cold prep liquid helps a ton. I followed the instructions to the letter – they tell you to drink 250 mL every 10-15 minutes, and I was trying to keep most intervals to 10, because I was eager to get it over with (so I was finished 2 liters in 90-100 minutes, well under the max of 2 hours). In the evening session, I almost threw up once, but it really was mind over matter, and I was able to keep it all down. I swear, I went to the bathroom more than 20 times between the start of the prep, and the start of the scope. I know that some preps have you drink less, sometimes just 1 or 2 liters, split into 2 doses (I think split preps have been found to be the most effective). But those usually require the patient to drink a LOT of water or other clear fluids throughout the process. So the fact that Colyte is a full gallon forces you to get all of that liquid in you, which is useful (also, the PEG is more diluted by water, which theoretically, should make it less vile). It was bad…but not nearly as bad as I had expected it to be. As for the scope itself…no issues. I was awake the whole time…they gave me 100 μg of fentanyl and 5 mg of midazolam, but in the moment, the sedation really didn’t make me feel drowsy or loopy or dizzy or anything.
Case you want to do an update, after having five colonoscopies so far in my life because I was given the pleasure of a colonoscopy at 25 because of rectal bleeding. I have learned one very important thing about the whole process as you stated cold is always best for what you are drinking. And apple juice has been the best additive for the prep and chaser. I personally with my doctors advice go to Walmart buy 2 gallons of apple juice and use that for the entire prep process and have had the best results in not being nauseated and doing the best to cover up the taste sensation and overall unpleasant in this of the prep. My doctor has liked my clean out the last two colonoscopies I’ve had using this method and system.
I’ve been prescribed the same bowel prep as you have shown, this is my first colonoscopy at the age of 29. This article was very helpful indeed, I was trying to convince myself to skip that second dose. How much I don’t want to wake up at 6am & do this all over again, I agree with it being a minor infraction when compared to making sure I leave my exam in good health & knowing everything is okay. Thank you for posting this article!
For me, being hydrated is the most important thing I’ve learned. I get cold hands and feet, headaches, higher heart rates and my veins are harder to find (the nurse puts a needle in me for sedation). Drink plenty of water when doing your prep. If you can, get Lucozade too, the sugar will help with the headaches and hunger pains. Hope this helps
Thank you Dr. Gandolfo for telling the truth of what the prep is like and how to make it easier. I like your apple juice idea. I’ll make a note of that. I have to have another colonoscopy in December. I hope I’ll be alright because I’ve had some not so good symptoms. May you live a long healthy & happy life.
I just have my colonoscopy done yesterday in a Cebu City, Philippines hospital with one of the best endoctronoligists in town in tow. The procedure from bowel preparation to the actual examination was quite disturbing and uncomfortable but everything is worth it because after all I have now peace of mind which matters the most. Thanks to everybody…
I am 69 and have had a colonoscopy 5 x due to polyps . Fortunately none cancerous. I have also worked in an Endoscopy center . It was a pleasure to watch a gastro physician drink that nasty prep which is the worst part of a colonoscopy. Thank you for the article, I am sure it has helped many that are having one for the first time.
Great article, I am about to have my 4th Colonoscopy since October 2019. Had several polyps (non cancerous) and it is very important. My doctor was great and gave me the the straight scoop and suggestions to get it down. I made sure I did everything I could to make it easier for the exam. My one suggestion is using ice in the mixture and splitting each dose in half to make sure you drink the 16 oz. But keep the prep cold. Didn’t need a chaser either. Hope this helps someone.
Watching this a few days before I start my prep. I’m scheduled for the test 2 years to the DAY, and nearly same TIME, that my mother passed away from colon cancer that had spread to her liver. I’m 43 years old, live in Canada, and I had to ask my doctor repeatedly for this test. Hopefully…all goes well.👌
I’m up for my 2nd one next month. Here are the two things I always share with others prepping for one : set up your “drink station” in the bathroom. A TV tray with soda or your choice of “chaser” and a container with ice to keep the prep cold. Trust me, you arent going to be running around the house doing chores towards the middle to end of that prep. After the test you ARE GOING EXPEL THE AIR that was used inside you during the test. Don’t be embarrassed, its just air and your body will feel SO much better when you just let it happen. It doesn’t smell and unless you do it, most post-procedure nurses won’t let you go home before you do.
Thanks heaps for the article, a couple of days too late though, that’s cool. My prep went fine. Trick is drink heaps of water starting from a day before. I thought I would develop gills as I just drank about 8 litres throughout the day before and right upto 1 hr before hand. They say 4 to 6 is fine, luckily it was a warm day so I was just really thirsty. Make sure you drink otherwise you will cop headaches. The prep itself. I took picoprep 2 sachets, which tasted like a fizzy lemon powdered drink we used to have in Australia called tang. The straw definitely helped in consuming it. Drink water as you drink the prep, kind of like a chaser. Hey pretend you are at a bar drinking tequilas. The colonlytely was a bit of a different story. That tasted like chalky water even if I did put it in the fridge for 30 mins. You have to drink 1 litre of this ‘shit’ within an hour. I very ‘anally’ set a timer dividing it upto 200 mls every 10 mins. I chased this down with gatorade enhanced water. Afterwards when you are done you will feel like you climb Mt Everest. Now the prep took about 30 mins to react, and then lasted about 2-3 hrs by the end my bowel movements were just water the day of the procedure. Big tip, don’t eat too much for 2 days prior, just stick to crackers. Best of luck, you will get through it. If I can do it, I know you can. The actual procedure is fine as you are totally knocked out. Cheers.
Hint, with the old gallon of bowl prep I was told I could take a sip of white grape juice after each swallow of bowl perp. It’s considered a clear fluid because it has no red dye in it but still has that sweet taste of grape juice. Also a tip for cleaning up after all the going to the bathroom from the prep is to clean your bottom with baby wipes to avoid getting the but burn feeling from using toilet paper from the repeated cleaning from the backyard trots the prep causes.
Thank you so much for this wonderful article! Having Crohns Disease, I get a colonoscopy about every 2 years so I’m pretty used to the prep. The only part that i really dislike is the sheer volume of liquid you have to drink. Your article puts a wonderfully humorous spin on the prep & honestly makes what to expect (for those who are doing their 1st rodeo), so much more understandable, & takes the fear of the unknown out of the equation. You’re a very cool Dr. & i appreciate this article immeasurably! 😊
Hi Dr. Gandolfo! I truly enjoyed your article. I found it very entertaining..You were my Dr. for many years before I moved to California last year…Your article makes me want to fly back to New York and have you give me a Colonoscopy. I wish you the best and will never forget your kind and caring ways..You are the best…Fondly, Jo Ann Cornelli
Best colonoscopy prep I have ever done was to chase each serving of prep with warm herbal tea and light coloured Gatorade. The more hydrated you are the less bowel cramping. I also timed the prep so I was finish the first dose so that I could go to bed early( 8pm) and started the 2nd dose of the prep between 3-4 am so I was done clearing out by the time I had to leave for my morning colonoscopy.
I’ve had 6 colonoscopies and I am happy with the 2 prep protocol with the water chasers vs the 1 gallon Trilyte. It really helps to start eating low fiber foods about 3 days or more before so everything clears out more easily. BTW, going “clear” doesn’t mean your output goes as clear as pure water!
Just had my colonoscopy (Dec. 2022) and the prep they gave me was easily a gallon and a half of fluid plus 3 8oz. glasses of clear liquid afterwards. Started at 6 pm form first half and then second half started at 2:30 am. This was different than my first one 5 years ago. Waaay more liquid. Would really love to have done this prep over what I did.
I have had quite few colonoscopies. I get banana popsicles and take a bite right after drinking the prep. I agree Suprep is the best (and I have had four different preps before this one). I also find the low fiber diet several days before the day-before diet helps greatly. I eat things I never eat like white bread and pancakes! Almost a treat since I eat whole grain breads and pastas normally.
Very informative and entertaining, explained the process very well. I had a colonoscopy earlier this year, fibe polyps discovered and one turned out to be cancerous. Operation followed and a lengthy recovery. Do not hesitate to have a colonoscopy, the prep is not pleasant but so important to get it right. Incidently, I was not given any sedative as told needed to be conscious to change position as required. A long procedure, in excess of an hour. Uncomfortable at times but in no way painful.
I have a portable bidet, so I don’t wipe at all, when this prep gives me the “runs”, I just pat dry. Saves me from getting sore and really soothing on the backside. I’m on the 5-year plan, as they’ve found at least one polyp each time (no family history of colon cancer and none of mine were cancerous). This year I’ll have my fourth colonoscopy. I start 3 days before, by eating less than I usually would. Chicken broth is my best friend during this time, as I find drinking something warm helps. Cold is the way to go on the prep and never drink anything that’s red in color, like Hawaiian Punch, cranberry juice or cherry Kool Aid while prepping. Great article!
I am having a colonoscopy in five days and am scared s…less. No pun intended. I have been perusal you tube articles on the preparation for it and your article tops all the others I have watched. Thank you for taking the time to create this informative and entertaining article. Kudos go out to you. God Bless.
My gastro said they don’t use Golytly anymore, except for folks with kidney issues. The go to now is Miralax and Gatorade. It is tons more tolerable. But the worst part, for me, is starving half to death and staying up all night. I feel like I’m going to die, and am almost wishing I would! They alway say that there’s no reason you shouldn’t get some sleep, but I don’t see how.
Thanks so much for this article. I watched it before having my colonoscopy, and it really helped. I’m posting this to share my first experience having a colonoscopy and how my prep went. I was put on a 3 day restricted diet. The first 2 days, I was on a low fiber and no meat or eggs diet. I followed everything as ordered, except on both days I had 6 steamed shrimp. (love my seafood and the shrimp satisfied my taste buds lol) The day before the procedure, I was on a liquid only diet, which I mostly had chicken broth, water, and Popsicles. Now the prep…I have heard so much about this that my fear was at an all-time high. I had the prep that was shown in this article, and it wasn’t nearly as bad as I expected. It tastes like salt water and a drop of cherry🍒 . It’s not a good taste, but it won’t kill you. I used Sprite Zero as a chaser as needed. It took me 45 minutes to get it down. DON’T rush. It resulted in 2 extreme bowel movements and quickly followed by a clear bowel movement. I drank 2 bottles of water over the next hour. The second prep was exactly like first. I was able to sleep 4 hours without having to get up. The procedure: It was simple. I was put under anesthesia, and everything went well. 3 non-cancerous polops were removed, and my next colonoscopy will be in 5 years. The doctor said my prep was nicely done. I was not hungry, as others have stated. I am a bariatric patient, so I eat small amounts of food, so this could make me an exception. My advice is to eat lightly and follow the diet restrictions given, and you will be okay.
I can’t tell you Doc how much your article helped!!!! I have one next Monday and perusal your article and hearing all your great tips and humor reduced my anxiety by 99%!! You were great! Loved your approach and the lightness you provided on such an important topic. Very much appreciated!! I will share this with anyone I know who needs a colonoscopy! 👏 😅
I had my first colonoscopy at 19 and was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. I am now 52 and have been having at least 1-2 colonoscopies a year since then. I have to say the bowel prep has improved a lot over the years. I used to have to drink a gallon of Golyte before every procedure. 🤮 I do chug the prep and chase it with ginger-ale. TMI, but you will be raw from the amount of times you have to use the restroom. I have baby wipes and a numbing ointment that was prescribed by my gastroenterologist. They definitely help.
I’m going in soon for my 2nd colonoscopy. My 1st one they found stage 3 cancer. I wish I had gone sooner. There where lots of signs that something was wrong. Don’t ignore those signs. I’m raising my young granddaughter I ignored the signs bc I was so busy raising a toddler at 60. I’m in remission now. The prep is horrible for sure. When you started drinking it, I felt sick to my stomach. But this was very helpful. Thank you.
I had my 2nd colonoscopy this morning. I decided to start the fasting the day before as I didn’t want to risk failing with the prep (as I didn’t trust myself) and being cancelled at the hospital. Was given 2 different products to take. 250mls of Orange PicoPrep to take at 5pm the night before. Was quite yummy. Then, at 7pm had to drink 1ltr of Lemon Colonlytely. It took me 5 hours to drink it. Mid nite I finally downed my last mouthful. Awful. Had to be up at 5am for another 250mls of Orange PicoPrep. I overslept until 0545. Uh oh 🙁 Anyway, got it down by 6am which was when my fasting period (officially) started. I was still shitting through the eye of a needle when I arrived at the hospital at 0845. But I scored a 9 on the BBPS so it all worked out. The worst part of the whole process was the cannula in my arm. Still very painful, like there is some needle still in there. But the results were Diverticulosis in the sigmoid colon. No cancer, no polyps, no after effects, no worries.
Thank you for this motivation. An important topic! Weirdly, the standard lemon-flavoured colposcopy prep in the NHS didn’t seem nearly as bad as this is described to be. Still all the tricks – chasers, chilling mind, not exactly a flavour to want. Also beef bullion cubes helped keep my strength up on the clear liquids part of the day.
I have to get a Colonoscopy once a year … This one is the easiest prep I’ve ever had !! One 8.3 oz bottle of Miralax ( Polyethylene glycol powder) Four 5mg. Dulcolax laxative pills ( laxative formula – Not stool softener) Two 32oz. Bottles of Gatorade.. My Dr. Said I can drink it with Apple juice instead!! Yay! No gross taste at all .. up now finishing my perp drink now before 3am . Hope this helps some of you .. The Miralax is tasteless 👍🏼Worth to buy this then getting the nasty 🤢 stuff in a script.
Avoid Gatorade. It’s full of sugar, chemicals and salt. Instead mix the Miralax with organic coconut water. I used Harmless Harvest. Coconut water has electrolytes naturally. Made the prep SUPER easy and enjoyable to drink. Wish I did this for my first colonoscopy in 2016. Tomorrow is my 2nd time going through the procedure. Definitely mix the prep and coconut water and put in fridge at least an hour prior to drinking. Had to take four Ducolax three hours prior to drinking the solution.
When I had my actual colonoscopy four years ago, they had me get magnesium citrate. I had my choice between cherry, lemon and grape, so I chose grape…I had to consume 1-1/2 bottles spaced over a 12 hour period. I chased it with grape-flavored water, which made he prep much easier to take. When I had my virtual colonoscopy a month later (my colon was too long as the sigmoidoscope couldn’t reach the end) I had the go-lighly prep. That was the gallon container with the lemon flavoring packet…it wasn’t as bad, but when I went to go in the middle of the night, I felt hot and flushed. I ended up with four flat polyps removed, but overall, it was a much better experience than I thought.
At age 77 I have had to suffer from three Colonoscopy’s. The best method I found was to buy TINY ICE CUBE trays, freeze the solution and then simply swallow the tiny cubes. The cubes are quite small and can be easily swallowed. There is no liquid to coat your mouth or tongue, so the awful taste is avoided. Also, as suggested use some flavor drinks to help as well and pace yourself when swallowing the cubes.
My first few colonoscopies, I was on this. Nearly gagged on almost every sip. My last colonoscopy, I decided to try Gatorade/Miralax with Dulcolax and it was so much better to drink. Sucks that I now have to do a colonoscopy every year and I’m still in my 20s but I’ll be doing the Gatorade prep for now on
I’m scheduled for a colonoscopy next week. This will be my 2nd time doing the procedure. I wish my doctor prescribed the prep solution that’s shown in the article. He only had to down two 16 oz servings. The last time (& next week) I have to take the prep called Golytely, which is a powder that you have to mix with 64 oz of water… SIXTY FOUR! That’s half a gallon of nastiness – BLEH! I have to drink 8 oz at a time, every 15 minutes, until half of the jug is gone. Then I have to wake up 4 hours prior to my appointment (which is at 3am) to finish off the rest. With all the advancements mankind has created in medical technology, why can’t they come up with a better solution?!?! We’ve launched humans into space, so make this gross stuff less disgusting! 🤢
I have had my second colonoscopy this week. Never had I had to drink those horrible prep drinks that are prescribed. Reason? My insurance didn’t cover it and it cost well over $100. Here was what I was told to do… The night before the fasting day I had to take a couple of tablespoons of Milk Of Magnesia. When I woke I did not eat solids. I had black tea and sipped on broth for the morning. At 2 PM I was instructed to take 4 capsules of Dulsalax. At 4 PM take an entire large bottle of Miralax and dilute the powder in Gatoraide. NO Red, blue, or purple. The original lemon-lime version. The electrolytes are important. Easy peasy! Then… Let the games begin! After waking the next morning with a completely empty colon I simply had to wait for my appointment which was at 12:30. Nothing to eat and no fluids 4 hours prior to the procedure. It cost me less than $30 and everything was over the counter. If you want to try this version then you will have to ask your dr.
My doctor is having me do 2 day prep. 2 days before : Clear liquids only. That evening I have to drink of Gatorade with a full bottle of MIRALAX 8.3 oz. in 2 hours, plus 2 Dulcolax pills. By the end of the 2 hours of drinking every 15 minutes, I threw up a third of the concoction. Now I’m facing the “Day Before Prep”. Same deal, only half of the amount tonight and then the day of the procedure the other half. Long story short: I haven’t eaten since Monday night, and my Colonoscopy isn’t until Thursday afternoon! If there is a Prep that can be done the day before with a light meal, why is my Gastroenterologist making me suffer for half a week?
For me, at least, the worst part was the anticipation. I’ve had 2 colonoscopies so far. The first one had 6 large pills taken every 15 min for an hour, followed by what I like to call “The night of a thousand waterfalls”. For my second, I had this SuPrep. It certainly wasn’t awful tasting, and I had no issues drinking it. The resulting “Waterfalls” weren’t as…spectacular, but it had the desired outcome.
My first colonoscopy was without general anaesthetic. The doctor was rough and it was painful. I hated it and avoided colonoscopies until I changed doctors. Then I learned how it was now done . Propofol and fentanyl cocktail was scary considering the dangers (MJ🙏🏻) . But in the hands of decent doctor, I go every couple of years because I lost a sister to colon cancer.
Thanks for this. The colonoscopy has never bothered me, just the prep drink has as unfortunately I’m one of those patients like so many others I know that their body just cannot handle the prep stuff, with various other drinks or even with a tube inserted up into my nose ( which was unbelievably too painful as I’m hypersensitive) So I will be having this other prep which is less to take & also includes having tablets to take first. So hopefully my body will be able to accept this prep & I can finally find out what is exactly wrong & hopefully sort it out. For those people who can manage this prep then well done to you. 👏 And for those of you who are like me, then not to worry there are always ways you can be helped by the hospital doctors or your own. 👍😊💖
I cut out fiber 4 days before the prep. I’ve had 2 colonoscopies because of polyps found and get one every 5 years. The day before I eat very light and the day of nothing but liquids. By eating soft foods, it makes it coming out a little easier. Drinking that junk, I use a straw. Trust me a straw with a large opening works and just space out my drinking with a water chaser. The most difficult part is drinking that stuff early in the morning. Even with it cold, it’s still nasty. Just remember, it’s only one day and not a lifetime of drinking that crap. Soft toilet paper, flushable wipes, and preparation H are a must.
Doing my prep now. 4 liters of Golightly. Barbaric. This stuff is nasty. I’ve tried everything: cold in the fridge, hard candy in my mouth while drinking it, squeezing lemon or lime juice in it, sucking on the lemon or lime (as in tequila shots), using Crystal Lite (lemon), sipping through the straw. Nothing helps except being scared of having colon cancer. Screaming after each glass helped the most. Love and good wishes to everyone going through this. Thanks Doc, for the great article. I think I will insist on a different type of prep next time.
I’m wishing I’d started WAY earlier in the day with this prep . I was off all day and could have popped all I wanted . But the nurse said to start at 5:00 pm . Then do the rest at 6:00 am tomorrow. Then I reread the sheet they’d given me with the prep . It said to start at 3pm today and do part 2 at 7pm . My colonoscopy isn’t until 1pm tomorrow. Wish I’d started this morning, did both earlier in the day and popped myself to death . Now it’s time I should be relaxing and I’m stuck on the crapper . And I still have part two to go 😱
Just drank this prep on Monday. Didn’t think I’d make it through the first cup, but carried on. Thanks for the tip to have it cold. Looking back, this prep was not bad at all and it is “mind over matter!” Had the Color Guard less than six months ago. Came back negative. After the colonoscopy, found 3 polyps. One a pretty good size. Glad something kept urging me to have this done. 😊
When I had a colonoscopy about 15 years ago, maybe longer, my prep consisted of 2 bottles of disgusting thick green crap that had to be drank over a period of time, and it was one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever had to have. I finally got through it, and there was nothing by mouth until after my procedure the next day. The entire prep was done the day before. So when I had an abnormal test a couple of years ago, I refused to do it because the prep was $100. My other reason was because while so many people tell how they woke up when it was all over, but I didn’t. I suffered through the entire thing. They had given me the “happy juice” but because I was taking Hydrocodone, it didn’t allow the other med to work, so I wasn’t looking forward to that again. I was no longer taking opioids but I just wasn’t going to do it. Four months ago I was struck by a GI infection called “C diff”. It is the most disgusting, foul, black, explosive diarrhea. My husband went and bought me Depends so I wasn’t throwing away all of my underwear or pants. I finally went to a doctor 10 days after it started because it wasn’t going away, and while there I went to the restroom and pooped into a “hat” that was placed in the toilet to catch it. After taking it to the lab, I found out later that day what I had and the antibiotics were super expensive, but it got me over it. It took a month of feeling miserable, missing Thanksgiving, and just feeling sick to finally agree to a colonoscopy. When I got my instructions for my prep I was so happy because it was going to be so easy.
I have tried two different preps and have not been able to get them down without throwing them up within 10 minutes max, I have a very strong gag reflex. I now have to try the cologuard test. I am so glad to see that they’ve come up with a pill form, I plan to ask my dr about it at my next appointment.
what worked best for me was drinking sips of the peeps followed by sips of apple juice, 7 UP…that removed the lingering taste of the prep. Also my friends doctor told her once her “waste” is completely, completely clear she could stop drinking the prep. Mine was clear and I still had 1/4 of the prep left, so even though instructions say to drink it all, I quit at that point. My colonoscopy went perfect.
I’ve had several colonoscopies, had tumour removed and will probably have more frequent ones than most. The bowel prep used in Spain doesn’t taste that bad. I’ve had two sorts – Moviprep I think was one. The problem is that you have to drink litres of it but it’s like drinking lemonade. In the instructions you are told to avoid certain foods for several days and liquid only the day before I believe.
I didn’t use Suprep for my first colonoscopy and it was easy. So 10 years later when I was given Suprep I truly thought I was going to die it was so horrible. Plus I got horrible cramps and didn’t start going for hours. Then I worried the entire night about taking the second dose. I could only get through about a third of the second dose and was so overwrought that when I got to the the medical center my blood pressure was 198/90 and I never had high BP before. Over the next 15-30 minutes it went down to 165/85 so they did the colonoscopy. After that I went to my regular doctor and still had high blood pressure and had to go on medication. I will always believe the Suprep was responsible. I refuse to use it now and do the Miralax and Dulcolax route.
I wish I had came across this earlier!! I had my first colonoscopy yesterday and would have loved to have watched this before. Yes, the prep tastes horrible but I used a straw and got through them. Doc found 4 polyps and one is being sent to pathology. This article is very lighthearted and educational. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience!
I drank mine cold & I drank it fast. I was fine. I will be going for my 5 year follow up, while I was fine my mom had polyps so they recommended a 5 year follow up for me, this year. The first dose didn’t really do anything for me. The second dose, I just stayed on the toilet & only took a break when other family members needed the bathroom.
I used the sutab prep and it was so easy. I don’t like to swallow pills, especially ones that big but they put a coating around each that made it really easy to swallow. One other tip I don’t see get mentioned a lot (I haven’t finished this article yet so it might be in it) but use a bidet to clean yourself after each evacuation. The only thing I didn’t like about my colonoscopy was the hunger and that’s because I didn’t eat anything at all, which was a mistake because I found I could still drink things that make you not feel hunger like broth or clear juice.
