What To Do If You Have Diarrhea And Your Butt Is Raw?

4.0 rating based on 140 ratings

To relieve a sore bum from diarrhea, use soft toilet paper or wet wipes, avoid alcohol or fragrance-based wipes, pat your anus dry, use a bidet if available, take a warm bath several times per day, use Vaseline, zinc cream, or a barrier cream for a sore bottom, wear cotton underwear, avoid tight pants or underwear, and avoid prolonged sitting.

To soothe the burning anus after diarrhea, keep the area clean, apply a barrier cream, avoid hot baths and showers, and avoid prolonged sitting. A gentle ointment like petroleum jelly can provide a barrier that protects the skin.

To treat the anal area, use damp toilet paper or wet wipes to clean the bum area with less friction. Consult your doctor or nurse about soothing creams like E45, vaseline, or zinc cream, and avoid wearing tight trousers or underwear. If using a barrier cream, choose a simple one like Sudocrem or zinc and castor oil, and avoid creams, soap, or talcum powder on the area.

If your child has diarrhea and a rash around the anus, use a protective ointment like Vaseline or Desitin. Proper hygiene, medications, and gentle care can help relieve an itchy anus. If symptoms persist after treatment, contact your healthcare provider.

Lastly, take a sitz bath after every bowel movement or as needed to cleanse the anus.

How do I stop my bum from burning after Diarrhoea?

How do I stop my bum from burning after Diarrhoea?

  • Use damp toilet paper or wet wipes to clean the bum area with less friction: Some people may find that wet wipes containing witch hazel, tea tree oil, or chamomile may help. However, there is no reliable evidence confirming that this helps. Avoid wet wipes with irritating fragrances and use a patting rather than wiping motion to reduce friction.
  • Apply petroleum jelly to the area: Products like Vaseline can help soothe the skin around the anus.
  • Try bathing in warm water: A sitz bath might also help, according to the U. K.’s National Health Service. This involves adding 1/4 cup of salt and 1/2 cup of baking soda to a bath with water about 5 inches high. A 2022 review of 11 studies found that evidence generally supported the anal pain relief properties of sitz baths.
  • Apply barrier creams: As in infants, emollients such as zinc oxide can provide a barrier between the skin and irritants like diarrhea poop.
  • Stick to loose, cotton underwear: Tight underwear made from synthetic materials can be irritating. Cotton can help absorb the excess moisture.

It is common to have a sore bum from diarrhea. Diarrhea can feel like it is burning, and it can also damage the skin around the anus, causing pain and irritation. Diaper rash can also affect babies in a similar way.

Treatments include gentle wiping and cleansing, avoiding irritants, and barrier creams. Consider a sitz bath for adults, which can also be effective. Change babies’ diapers regularly to prevent and manage diaper rash.

How do you soften poop so it comes out?

How do you soften poop so it comes out?

Depending on the cause, you can try eating more fiber to soften your stool or use an over-the-counter softener like Miralax. Exercise and abdominal massage might also help. If none of these work to release the stool and reduce your pain, see your doctor. Learn more about ways to release hard stool.

A stool that’s stuck halfway out can be a sign of constipation or fecal impaction. Walking around, drinking water, or taking a laxative can often help you pass it. But some signs can point to a medical emergency.

Squirming to pass a stool is anything but pleasant. It happens to a lot of people and is even common in babies as they switch from a liquid diet to solid foods.

Impacted stool can cause poop to get stuck. But having your poop stuck halfway out doesn’t always point to impaction. Everyday constipation is another possible culprit.

Why does my butt hurt when I have diarrhea?

Causes of bottom soreness after diarrhea Diarrhea may cause burning due to digestive enzymes and stomach acid in your poop. Undigested food, especially rough foods, can also cut your rectum and anus as they pass through. Diarrhea may cause you to wipe your anus more frequently than usual.

Prolonged diarrhea isn’t a pleasant experience. It can lead to uncomfortable symptoms, including a rash on your bottom or a sore anus from too much wiping. Babies are even more prone to developing rashes, due to their tender skin and tight diapers.

Home remedies can often help reduce discomfort caused by diarrhea.

Let’s look at ways you can soothe your or your baby’s sore bum caused by diarrhea. We also explain when your child’s diarrhea may warrant a visit to the doctor.

Is Vaseline good for diarrhea rash?

Diaper rash is a common symptom in children aged between birth and 3 years, affecting the skin around the anus. It can be caused by various factors, including irritant rashes, stool rashes, ammonia rashes, diarrhea rashes, yeast rashes, bacterial rashes, cellulitis, and staph scalded skin syndrome.

Irritant rashes can be caused by the drying effect of soaps, while stool rashes are common due to bacteria in urine. Ammonia rashes are caused by the combination of stool and urine in a diaper, causing a mild chemical burn. Diarrhea rashes are common during diarrhea and contain enzymes that digest food, irritating the skin.

Yeast rashes can cause a secondary infection with bright red, raw, and weepy rashes, while bacterial rashes can cause sores, yellow scabs, pimples, or draining pus. Cellulitis is a serious bacterial infection that spreads into the skin, causing redness that spreads out from the sore. Staph scalded skin syndrome is a serious condition caused by a Staph bacteria, causing widespread large blisters and causing severe symptoms.

Symptoms of diaper rash can range from mild pink, dry skin to severe red rashes, which can lead to crying and poor sleep. It is essential to use protective ointments like Vaseline or Desitin to form a barrier between the skin and the stool.

Why is my bum so sore after diarrhea?

Why is my bum so sore after diarrhea?

When you have diarrhea, your anus may become inflamed from wiping more often than usual. Using extra-gentle toilet paper or wet wipes can help reduce friction and irritation.

Some wet wipes also have ingredients like witch hazel or aloe vera that may help soothe tender skin.

Witch hazel and aloe vera are often recommended to treat anus inflammation caused by hemorrhoids. Some people anecdotally report these ingredients helping reduce bum pain.

Toilet paper and wipes containing alcohol or fragrances can cause allergic reactions or irritation. If you’re going to the bathroom more often than usual, you might also be more sensitive to these products than you’d typically be.

How do you treat raw diaper rash from diarrhea?

  • Wash your baby’s diaper area gently with warm water. When your baby has a diaper rash, try to avoid soaps and baby wipes (these can irritate sore skin).
  • Let the skin dry fully. Then apply a diaper ointment or paste that contains zinc oxide (such as such as Desitin, Triple Paste, Balmex, or a store brand).
Can diarrhea make your skin raw?

Can diarrhea make your skin raw?

Firstly, diarrhoea causes fluid bowel motions, which still contain digestive juices intended to break down the food in your body. Normally these would be removed before the bowel movements exit your body. When you have diarrhoea, these juices come into contact with your skin and start to irritate it.

Secondly, you probably notice that diarrhoea causes you to go to the toilet much more frequently. This means you’ll be wiping your bottom much more often, causing further damage to the skin.

Finally, in rarer cases the area can become infected, which can make the area quite painful.

Luckily, there are ways to prevent this from happening.

  • I am currently experiencing a horrible rash. I’ve had it once before. It’s a fungal infection. Dr prescribed LamiSil, Ararax for itching and triamcinolone acetonide 0.1 % cream. It’s the weekend so I have cream to use, not the other. I messaged my dr and hopefully will get back to me on Monday. I am having urine/bowel leakage issues that probably are causing the problem. I am having a procedure soon to correct these problems, so hopefully this will stop. But right now I’m miserable. 😢😢😢. Thank you for sharing this information!

  • I get itching bottom too. Never scratch! Makes it worse! It is an infection so what I do is I get a warm water strong paper towel with soap on it and rinse my bottom. Then I use a plain warm water paper towel to get rid of the soap. Then I get a dry paper towel and make sure I dry good. Sweating? I do the same thing. It works.

  • Ivermectin sorted me right out. Don’t want to get graphic but I had so many parasites my shit looked like shredded wheat. My stomach was moving all night like a chestburster was about to come out. You could see my tummy rippling from so much movement. I ended up having nightmares where I would cut myself open to get the worms out. The psychological damage was very bad. No doctor accepted that I had a parasite infection, they never believe in parasites. Even after showing them photographs. So I went online and bought animal ivermectin and took the correct dose for a great Dane. After five weeks the shredded wheat was gone. Also, I cut out sugar. Also I took to squatting to go. It clears you out better. It’s much more natural and healthy. I started to sleep like a baby. I cannot tell you how at peace I felt.

  • I use baby wipes (much cheaper than actual toilet wipes which are basically the same thing anyway) after wiping with toilet paper as even the softest 3ply toilet paper can feel so dry like sand paper for me, plus toilet paper alone doesn’t always leave you clean. You just feel so much cleaner and fresher after using baby wipes! We use them to clean up babies bottoms thoroughly after bowel movements, so why not adults!! If I just use toilet paper, sometimes I will get itchy and know I’m not fully clean in that area despite wiping as thoroughly as possibly just with toilet paper. I have to carry baby wipes when using public toilets as the cheaper scrachier paper in public toilets is like sand paper to me and after using a public toilet after a couple of times, I will start to bleed slightly in the area just like I’m using actual sand paper. The more I use the cheaper paper, the worse the problem becomes and the bleeding will get worse. One day while travelling I thought I had burst a haemorrhoid (which I knew I didn’t have one) as the bleeding got so bad after a few trips to public toilets, no it was just the toilet paper tearimg me to pieces!! If I do start bleeding it also gets extremely painful in the area so I then have to use a haemorrhoid ointment (more like a clear gel) that works wonderfully to help the pain, bleeding and inflammation in the area and help it heal a lot quicker. After wiping the painful area with normal toilet paper, cleaning up thoroughly with soft, cool, wet baby wipes feels so good then the ointment gives instant relief from the pain in the area as it gets more painful the more you have to wipe with normal paper in public toilets.

  • I had this and it drove me mad. Was starting to scratch pretty hard so saw my GP. If you scratch too hard too often you can damage the delicate tissues around the old A hole. Anyway he prescribed some ointment called Mometasone Furoate and it sorted itself out after a few weeks……stings a bit upon initial application but the relief was great. Word of advice cheap rough toilet paper doesnt help nor does germolene or vasoline. I thought it was Haemarroids at first but the Dr said it was just inflammation.

  • Thanks doc, very concise. Mine situation might be slightly different though. Damaged most of my cartilage between my L3-L6, which makes me not as mobile as I like. With me pushing 60 I also seem to be getting mini hemorrhoids every few months. Usually relieved by carful scratching up there with moisturizer. Just saying, I know you probably don’t approve. I have cleaned normally for years followed by a deep clean with a deep moisturizing lotion wiping after. Prob due to the OCD with being on the spectrum. At any rate your mention of moisturizing is great and cleans better than wipes ever could (I’ve tested once or twice out of curiosity).

  • I had nighttime itching that kept me up most nights and reduced my quality of life. It was mostly anal, but also genital and whole body. My dermatologist just said that we don’t really know what causes that type of itch, but probably neuropathic. I went on gabapentin a year ago for a different reason and haven’t had any problems since.

  • I was perusal my dog in the backyard one afternoon. He had this problem and seemed to find relief scooting around on his butt on the grass. Naturally, seeking relief for the same issue I began to do it. It worked WONDERS! No more itchy, angry anus. On a side note, do you have any home remedies for carpet burn? Also, where is the cheapest place in town to rent a Rug Doctor?

  • Thankyou for your article health information. For quite a while l have had an ichy bottom l have been putting on some white cortizoncream and also have a skin irritation on mt lower left stomach and lower right leg have been putting on some creams seems to help a little but not going away . Hopefully l am to see my family doctor this March 8 on a Friday for my general health checkup hopefully the doctor can prescribe for me some kind of a stronger antibiotic cream to help clear these things up get all better again that will be very good. Thankyou for your health article very interesting good information.

  • It took many years and a lot of close observation of “time of year” and unique dietary items to discover that ” urushiol ” was my issue. Years ago, cashew nuts were a delicacy and only appeared around Christmas. As time has gone on, the nut has become far more common and less expensive. The problem is that urushiol is present in the shell of a cashew. Improperly prepared cashews can be contaminated and eating them can cause a reaction. Urushiol is what makes Poison Ivy an irritant. Eat badly prepared, cheap cashews and you are basically eating poison ivy. Anyone particularly sensitive to urushiol can develop Pruritus Ani.

  • THIS is why, since I was about the age of 12, I ALWAYS WASH, RINSE, and pat DRY my entire anal area after EVERY elimination, no exceptions! My new house will have a bidet, but just rinsing the perianal area with plain water and possibly creating an atomized fecal matter-containing mist doesn’t sound all that hygienic, either. SOAP and water, every time!! My ass never itches or smells nasty!

  • I can’t believe I’m perusal this! As a nurse I’m well versed in care for the skin. Also I’m a gay man. No boom boom in a while. My bum has been so itchy. I keep it spotless. I have no worms. I’ve been using hot compressions which relieve the itch and I’ve used creams. They help for a little while. I might need to use a steroid at this stage. It’s been 3 days. I don’t have piles. 🤷‍♂️ What’s up with me!

  • He missed a major one: urushiol. Cashew, mango, and pistachio contain the same allergenic compound found in poison ivy, poison ivy, poison sumac, etc. If your ath itches like crazy, and you don’t know why because you took a shower—and you know how to wipe like an adult—and you happen to eat these foods, then you might be having an allergic reaction.

  • ATTENTION GUYS!: A old woman neighbor woman told me this and I felt immediately better. But it took me 3 weeks to see the changes into a better and not scratching bottom. I Washed the baby wipes in clear water because scent and chemicals can irritate your bottom. When the baby wipes is wash or pressed the chemicals out you already clean yourself with toilet paper, then use APPLE VINEGAR in the baby wipes and clean the area. When the bottom is clean with vinegar then use AQUAPHOR CREAM/ointment on the Anus area. I press a little inside for the AQUAPHOR to be in the ring/entry sphincter. I felt the relief immediately and it took me almost 3 weeks to get rid of it. I use to do this every time I poop. And that’s all guys. Apple Vinegar does help against bacteria and fungal. Also warm butt baths and AQUAPHOR can make things way better. Try and you won’t regret. The pure vinegar the better in the wipes. Don’t deluded with water or how ever you feel the relief. Bye guys. This is my opinion.

  • Thread worms also known as pinworms will make your anus itch like crazy. OMG, I had them when I was a child and I could not sit still. I recall my grandmother telling my mother that she thought that I might have worms because I could not sit still and kept squirming. My mother argued with my grandmother saying “no, she doesn’t.” My grandmother was sure of it and checked me. Sure enough, I had a bad case of pinworns. I was so glad when I got rid of those worms. Thank God for my grandmother, she was sharp as a tac. My mother was another story 🙄

  • I had itchy butt for years. Turns out it was the toilet paper. I switched from using Charmin and Angel soft to the cheapest Scott brand I could find. Glad I did. It’s beyond paper thin so I doubled up from 3 pieces to 6 per wipe. It takes 2 or 3 wipes now and I’m clean. My itchy butthole is gone. I think it was the toilet paper, probably the chemicals in it. Shit sucks.

  • I have been suffering with this for a few months now, as I have lived with piles all my life I just thought it was this. But the itch feels like it is more inside than on actual bottom hole? I have been using a hemorrhoid cream (inserted finger) to control and manage this but would like to get rid completely, any suggestions?

  • None of you know my pain. I’m a full ethnic minority but born in Britain female approaching 30 years of age and diagnosed only with Prurigo Nodularis. Despite being the most hygienic person I know, not sexually active, being a consumer of healthy foods and really looking after myself, I am plagued all over my body including my bottom. I’m in constant itching and pain Including now. Dr D, I’ve tried it all. Nothing is helping at all.

  • Thank you for this article I have watched it several times and I’m I’m saving this. And definitely sorry for this being long. 😊 The first time I had these symptom was in my mid 30’s. I’m almost 60. Doctors or pharmacy couldn’t tell what it was. I thought I had a sexual transmitted disease which I thought from my child father. I broke up with him. Even though I was tested negative several times. I’m just curious and cautious about my body. It’s not like I have a MD..my anxiety was on overdrive. So I became celibate ( personally feeling safer) This symptom came back again about a few wks ago. It lasted a few days and went away as usual. It is always very itchy in that area like always. I don’t scratch it because I didn’t want to irritate it more or cause infection with my nails( break skin) them that becomes another problem I guess. I changed tissues paper over the yrs (no help) I changed soaps ( no help) I tried creams and it still keep coming back (no help).I get a flare up about once or twice a yr. I’m really failing at this and I’m annoyed. But I will try some of your remedies. See if those suggestions with work. Thank you again. And sorry for telling all of this. We are strangers 😅so I’m cool 😂

  • I remember one time I was in a program and they were playing with me they were handing out toilet paper and I was visiting from another program and the guy gives me one little square and I’m going hurry up man I got to go to the bathroom give me some paper and then it gives me a second little square and I said okay check this out man don’t get angry with me if your sink smells a little funny😂😂😂

  • I found I was over wiping the anus after bowl movement that would make the anus sore and itchy especially when I was walking that would make the area bleed slightly, so now after initial wipe I just dab to keep clean and wash the area with warm water from a hand held shower head, and now feels good. Thankyou.

  • All very well and interesting, but the article fails to address the itching when it’s slightly further in and just past the anal sphincter and into rectal territory. I’m quite often subjected to my demonic itching in precisely that farther in spot, and it seems to particularly appear and torment me just as I leave to go out and walk my dog. What do I find useful? Sorry to have to say this, but… a d-mn good scratch! Trouble is that I’m out and about. What is particularly useful is if we’re (myself and my dog alone) walking through woods. Ensuring no-one is around, I can usually find a protruding tree branch or rock or similar pointy projection to partially impale myself upon to effect a good scratch action. BLISS! Sounds ‘gross’, I know, but the reality is that although I can take a good deal/high threshold of pain… itchiness drives me crazy, so I’ve no choice. I hasten to add that it’s through (and with) my loose walking trousers on. I’ve never had any issues such as damage due to such frantic scratching, but that’s not to say that others similarly wouldn’t damage themselves. Thus, I wouldn’t recommend the practice. My dog doesn’t seem to mind my surreptitiously uncouth comportment.

  • NHS doesn’t care about this in this country. In the United Kingdom, nobody cares about this. I don’t know why you trying to make money from this. We all suffer from this the NHS in this country doesn’t want to know. The company called NHS United Kingdom. N h s united kingdom don’t give it a timer about this

  • Thanks for the uninformative article Doctor O’donovan. I have a family member who had hemeroids + bowel cancer and left it too long before seeing a doctor. The bowel couldnt be saved. Now has to excrete into a plasic bag. Here in Australia we have free regular Government bowel scans. If you have never had one do it now. That untalked about part of your anatomy is so important. Think about it and good luck.

  • I am currently experiencing anal itching. Although I spent most of my early age (till tenage) in the hilly region of Kashmir. I noticed that when I go to Kashmir, I experience regular bowel habits but when I come to Populus City, I face problems related to bowel habits. Doctors examined and diagnosed the condition as IBS-C. I researched and found that if this is the case, the patient should sit in warm water. I did this and the itching went away but a little bit is still there. Thank you doctor for explaining.

  • I’m really getting itchy anus from few days. I had surgery haemorrhoidplexy and a tag removal like 12 days ago.. doctors said to be I shouldn’t be applying anything there as my skin tag was removed and stitches there.. he also said to me not to put pressure on my anus while doing poop, which I am not. I am also feeling really itchy after doing poop and then feel like there’s some poop. But nothing comes out, as I’m not putting any pressure.. this so annoying to have😢😢

  • I have itching bottom too, i guess is because i wipe with toilet paper too much… but when i wipe till i can’t see anything on the toilet paper, but then when i press the toilet paper to anus it gets dirty again.. i dont understand how it gets stuck up there, and at work i sweat a lot.. and get rush on the butt cheeks, i guess from them rubbing at each other.

  • I dated a girl from Thailand, she always washes that area after every use because in Thailand they have sprayers for this. I have adopted that same principle, and now I think it’s disgusting to not wash with soap and water after doing business. I try and make all this happen at home so I don’t have to do the deed elsewhere. When you wash your butt every time you go, you’ll feel fresh down there. Without washing it’s impossible to get it all off. Just think how many people are walking around with brown stains around their butt….yuk.

  • I’m currently experiencing this which i honestly need help. It started with blood in my poop and i was asked to eat much of fiber food which i did and it later stopped. Then i notice a small lump beside my anus which is always itchy anytime i touch it, it puss out fluid of bad smell sometimes as well.

  • Embarrassing to admit but when I was living in a boarding house while in my MSc program, I inexplicably got infected by this worm. I could feel the dam thing burrowing in my bottom part. How that infection happened I don’t know . I’m a DVM and meticulously wash hands, etc. and didn’t have a roommate. I actually extracted a single specimen and then it was gone. Twas a thoroughly disgusting experience.

  • I had worms as a kid. Onecday after the toilet my bottom was itching so i scratched amd saw a little worm on my finger, was it a baby thread worm ? Im not sure. but, they weren’t thread words to my knowledge. They looked more like little short, round worms. I was always hungry and i dont know if the worms were contributing towards that. I never told my parents as i was embarrassed
