When You Have Diarrhea, Are Rice Cakes Beneficial?

4.0 rating based on 200 ratings

When experiencing diarrhea, it is essential to keep it simple and avoid exotic foods and drinks. Instead, stick to bland and easy-to-digest foods like chicken, fish, eggs, puddings, mashed potatoes, noodles, rice, yogurt, and plain white rice cakes. Drinking plenty of fluids is crucial for staying hydrated, and there are several foods that can help recover faster.

Rice cakes, known for their healthy snacking abilities, are not recommended due to their high fiber content. Start with one or two rice cakes per day and gradually increase your intake. Rice water provides fluid to prevent dehydration and starchiness helps bind stools and reduce the duration of diarrhea. Dr. Clarke recommends plain white versions as they are good sources of carbohydrates.

The BRAT diet, which includes bananas, white rice, applesauce, and toast, is recommended for a quicker recovery. The body loses a lot of water and salts during diarrhea, so it may be at risk of becoming dehydrated. Some foods, such as salty low-fiber crackers, white rice, broth, and applesauce, may firm up stool and replace lost nutrients.

To reintroduce foods, start by reintroducing rice porridge, Farina or cream of wheat, pretzels or saltine crackers, boiled eggs, and unflavored rice cakes. Other recommended foods include boiled vegetables, low-fiber starches, lean poultry, crackers, soup, and eggs.

Add low-fiber, low-fat, starchy foods such as soda crackers, white toast, English muffins, plain bagel, breadsticks, steamed rice, and white potatoes. Follow the BRAT diet to get better and avoid “bland” foods with little acidity and no spice.
