This study investigates the use of 16 rhizomes from Chinese medicinal herbs, including Coptis chinensis, Paeonia lactiflora, Forsythia suspensa, and Curcuma aromatica, as research materials. The Chinese herbs investigated include qi supplementation, heat-clearing, and toxin-resolving drugs. Chinese herbal medicines have been widely used for the prevention and treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) due to their efficacy and low side effects.

Chinese herbal medicines and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) have been shown to regulate oxidative stress, and they have been used to treat diseases related to Lamiaceae. Avones, such as baicalin and wogonin, are distinct for lacking a 40-OH group but having a 6-OH group. In China, several herbal medicines and Chinese medicine compound formulas have been developed.

The results showed that total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD), catalase (CAT), acid phosphatase (ACP), and alkaline phosphatase (AKP) activities in rainbow trout were significantly reduced. Methanolic extracts of sweet flag, Japanese sweet flag, Chinese thoroughwax, and Chinese yam also showed anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects. Four common herbs, Leonurus artemisia, Panax quinquefolis, Gynostemma pentaphyllum, and Angelica sinensis, were chosen to compare the PL.

Several Chinese and other Asian herbal medications implicated in liver injury include Ba Jiao Lian* (Dysosma pleianthum), Bol Gol Zhee, and Qing Re Yao. TCM herbs are classified into several classes based on their effects on enzyme and signaling pathway activity.

Ten kinds of Chinese herbal medicines can be used against cancers by promoting apoptosis of cancer cells. A Chinese medicine enzyme shampoo is prepared by adding, subtracting, and cutting Qibaomeirandan and combining with black soybean. Astragalus membranaceus is one of the most popular health-promoting herbal medicines and has been commonly used in China for its health benefits.

What tea reverses insulin resistance?

Green tea or green tea extract (GT/GTE) has been shown to reduce insulin resistance and improve glycemic control in people with pre-diabetes/type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, evidence for this health beneficial effect is inconsistent. A systematic review of randomized controlled trials of participants with pre-diabetes or T2DM, where the intervention was GT/GTE, was conducted. Six studies (n=382) were pooled into random-effects meta-analysis. Overall, no differences were found between GT/GTE and the placebo for glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), fasting insulin (SMD, −0. 25; 95 CI, −0. 64 to 0. 15), and fasting glucose (SMD, −0. 10; 95 CI, −0. 50 to 0. 30). No evidence support the consumption of GT/GTE could reduce the levels of HbA1c, HOMA-IR, fasting insulin, or fasting glucose in people with pre-diabetes/T2DM. The studies included were small and of varying quality. T2DM is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by insulin resistance and high blood glucose levels, with the number of cases almost quadrupling since 1980. Research suggests that T2DM could be largely preventable through dietary and lifestyle changes.

Chinese medicine has been found to significantly contribute to the treatment of liver fibrosis, a chronic liver disease characterized by the replacement of liver tissue by fibrosis, scar tissue, and regenerative nodules. Fuzheng Huayu (FZHY) formula, a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) 319, is a SFDA-approved antifibrotic medicine in China. A meta-analysis of 1392 subjects (714 cases and 678 controls) was conducted to evaluate the curative effects of FZHY on liver fibrosis and cirrhosis progress.

The results showed that FZHY treatment decreased alanine transaminase (ALT), total bilirubin (TBil), hyaluronic acid (HA), laminin (LN), type III procollagen (PC-III), and type IV procollagen (IV-C) levels, while albumin (ALB) increased significantly. The Child-Pugh score was reduced significantly and life quality was improved after FZHY treatment in cirrhosis patients.

The results of this meta-analysis indicated that FZHY effectively improves liver function, alleviates hepatic fibrosis, decreases Child-Pugh score, and relieves TCM symptoms caused by liver dysfunction. This suggests that FZHY may contribute to the alleviation of liver fibrosis and cirrhosis.

However, clinical treatment for liver fibrosis, including early intervention or control of etiologies and hepatic inflammation and regulation of hepatic extracellular matrix (ECM) metabolism and stellate cell (HSC) activation, still lacks effective medications. Current studies have shown that FZHY has the effect of antifibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis B and experimental rats, and reduces hyaluronidase and improves life quality in liver cirrhosis patients.

Ginseng, a traditional Chinese herb, has been extensively studied for its potential in treating diabetes, dyslipidemia, and obesity. Ginseng extracts from the root, rootlet, berry, and leaf of Panax quinquefolium and Panax ginseng have been proven to have anti-hyperglycemia, insulin sensitization, islet protection, anti-obesity, and anti-oxidation properties in various model systems. Ginseng-specific saponins (ginsenosides) are considered the major bioactive compounds for the metabolic activities of ginseng.

Berberine from rhizoma coptidis is an oral hypoglycemic agent, anti-obesity, and anti-dyslipidemia activities, with the action mechanism being related to inhibition of mitochondrial function, stimulation of glycolysis, activation of the AMPK pathway, suppression of adipogenesis, and induction of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor expression. Bitter melon, or bitter gourd, can reduce blood glucose and lipids in both normal and diabetic animals, may also protect β cells, enhance insulin sensitivity, and reduce oxidative stress.

Despite the consistent evidence from animals and humans supporting the therapeutic activities of ginseng, berberine, and bitter melon, multi-center large-scale clinical trials have not been conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of these herbal medicines. Metabolic syndrome, characterized by insulin resistance, has become a global health concern, with the prevalence of metabolic syndrome increasing dramatically in Europe and Asia.

The Astragali Radix-Angelicae Sinensis Radix Pair (AR and AS) is a common Chinese Medicine (CMM) combination used to treat kidney disease. The combination, also known as Danggui Buxue Tang (DBT), has a 5:1 weight ratio, promoting better dissolution of effective components and generation of new ones. The AR to AS ratio is best for immunomodulatory, oesteotropic, and estrogenic effects.

The AR-AS pair has been shown to promote blood flow recovery, improve microstructure dysfunction, enhance NO production, and induce erythropoietin (EPO) mRNA expression and secretion of EPO protein. The mechanism acting on EPO might be related to increasing the expression of HIF-1α mRNA and promoting protein translation via a Raf/MEK/ERK-dependent signaling pathway.

However, some studies suggest that the CMM pair cannot reduce urinary protein. Instead, it may regulate lipid metabolism by upregulating the expression of the hepatic LDL receptor gene and increasing the activities of serum lipoprotein and lecithin-cholesterol acyltransferase.

The immunomodulatory effect of DBT is reflected in immune activation in human T-lymphocytes and macrophages. DBT can significantly induce the proliferation of cultured T-lymphocytes, secrete IL-2 and p-ERK, and increase the phagocytosis of cultured macrophages. This aligns with the TCM theory that TCM with beneficial Qi contributes to improving the defense ability of the immune system.
