Why Is My Cat Not Eating And Has Diarrhea?

3.5 rating based on 44 ratings

Cats require nutrition to heal their intestines, so they are not fasted when they have diarrhea. If they begin vomiting, it is important to withhold food and contact your veterinarian. Cats can get diarrhea due to various causes, including eating toxic substances or foreign objects. Common gastrointestinal (GI) problems in cats include pancreatitis, which can cause nausea, vomiting, constipation, and weight loss. Changes in diet, food intolerances, or allergies to specific ingredients can also be responsible for diarrhea.

Cats may experience intestinal obstruction, toxins ingestion, organ failure, pancreatitis, diabetes, kidney disease, and chronic illnesses. Kidney disease is relatively common in older cats and often causes nausea, leading to cats refusing to eat. Chronic illnesses, anxiety, stress, bacterial infections, changes in diet or treats, colitis, eating garbage or spoiled food, and parasites can also cause diarrhea in cats.

Common causes of diarrhea in cats include sudden changes in diet, eating something that upsets their tummy, and mild bouts of diarrhea. Infections can also cause diarrhea, as the food your cat eats doesn’t spend enough time in the intestines, reducing the absorption of nutrients, electrolytes, and water. It is crucial to address these issues and provide necessary care for your cat’s health.

Should I feed my cat if he has diarrhea?

No Need for Fasting. Cats need nutrition to heal their intestines. Therefore, cats are not fasted when they have diarrhea (unlike dogs, which often are). If they begin vomiting, however, you should withhold food and contact your veterinarian.

Bland Diet Options. 1. Plain, boiled, boneless, skinless chicken and rice (the leftover from the rice water).

2. Chicken or turkey baby food (be sure it does not contain onions or garlic – the links we provided are pet-safe baby food choices)

3. Encourage Water and Electrolyte Intake. Cats with diarrhea need to take in sufficient amounts of water to prevent dehydration.

Keep your cat’s water bowls filled with fresh, clean water and consider adding an extra bowl that contains diluted chicken or beef broth. A water fountain is also something you can use to encourage your cat to drink more water.

Another easy way to increase your cat’s water intake is to switch them from kibble to a wet canned diet. It’s best to stick with the canned food equivalent (same brand and flavor) to avoid further stomach upset. Temporarily, you can even mix an extra tablespoon or two of warm water into your cat’s wet canned food.

4. Probiotics. Healthy bacterial populations within a cat’s intestinal tract are necessary for normal digestion. Sometimes when they are disrupted, a cat’s diarrhea will continue even after the initial insult (stress, disease, antibiotic therapy, etc.) has resolved.

A loss of appetite often means your cat is ill, so you should consult your veterinarian as soon as you notice a change in eating habits. The more quickly you respond to the problem, the more able you’ll be to do something that will help.

Illness. Loss of appetite is one of the key clues that something is wrong. So be sure to pay attention if your cat suddenly stops eating. A number of different conditions may be responsible, including infections, kidney failure, pancreatitis, intestinal problems, and cancer. Even a toothache can make your cat stop eating.

Recent vaccination. Did you notice your cat’s loss of appetite shortly after you took it to the vet for routine vaccinations ? If so, the reason your cat won’t eat may be a bad reaction to the shots. Although vaccines have been lifesavers for millions of animals, they do cause side effects in some. Loss of appetite is among the more common of these side effects, which are usually temporary and mild.

Can cats diarrhea heal itself?

In healthy adult cats, mild diarrhea that is not accompanied by other symptoms can resolve on its own within 24-48 hours. However, seek vet care right away if:

  • Diarrhea lasts longer than 24 hours
  • Other symptoms, such as vomiting, lethargy, or loss of appetite, accompany it
  • Your cat has an underlying health condition
  • There is digested blood or a large amount of fresh blood in the stool
  • A young kitten is experiencing severe diarrhea

After consulting a vet, you can help your cat with diarrhea at home in a few ways. Provide access to plenty of clean, fresh water to combat dehydration. A vet may recommend fasting your cat, offering a bland diet, or changing their diet. Note: fasting a cat should only be performed under the guidance of a veterinarian, as it can be dangerous for the pet. Finally, vet-approved anti-diarrheal medications may help relieve the symptom. Never give a cat medications your vet has not approved.

Diarrhea is a common symptom of many conditions and cannot always be prevented. However, there are steps cat owners can take to reduce potential causes. Avoid sudden food changes or offering table scraps to your cat. Keep other foods and tempting non-food items, such as houseplants, away and out of reach. Always keep parasite prevention and vaccinations up-to-date and discuss potential side effects of medications with your vet. Finally, taking your cat to receive regular wellness exams and testing can help catch any underlying conditions before symptoms begin. If your cat is experiencing diarrhea, or you have questions about the causes of diarrhea in cats, you can make an online virtual care appointment to discuss your cat’s health with a Vetster online vet.

What happens if a cat doesn't eat for 3 days?

What happens if a cat doesn’t eat for 3 days?

What happens if cats don’t eat for a few days? If a cat doesn’t eat for even a few days, there are some health risks. It can lead to severe liver disease as their body attempts to use stored fat for energy but struggles to process this. This is especially likely in an overweight cat that suddenly stops eating.

Similarly, if you have a geriatric cat who has a regular feeing routine who does not eat for 24 hours, contact your vet.

If you have an indoor cat, you will know if they haven’t eaten but if you have an outdoor cat, you can’t always be so sure. They could have started eating out at a neighbour’s house (especially if you have had new people moving into the area) or at certain times of year, they may be supplementing their diet by hunting – all of which might be more appealing than their regular home diet!

Look for other signs of illness or just feeling off-colour – such as lethargy, sleeping more, inability to get comfortable etc but as always, if you have any concerns at all, contact your vet.

Should I feed my cat after diarrhea?

Outdoor cats should be kept indoors with a litter tray to monitor fecal output during recovery and minimize the risk of spreading contagious diseases. It is important to identify and address the cause of diarrhea rather than simply managing symptoms, as this may help prevent recurrences. Osmotic diarrhea, where water is drawn into the gut due to too many solutes remaining in the intestine, is common in simple conditions such as over-feeding or ingestion of poorly absorbed substrates. It usually resolves without treatment in one to two days if food is withheld for a short time. Omitting one meal is usually sufficient, provided the volume is suitable when food is reintroduced, and indigestible foods are off the menu in the future.

Recovery is generally quicker if food is highly digestible and fed in small quantities. Increased frequency of feeds means smaller meals, which are more acceptable to cats with a low appetite and less work for the gut at any one time. 3-4 small meals are usually suitable during recovery. Fresh water must always be available, and encourage drinking because cats with diarrhea are at risk of dehydration. Your vet may recommend an electrolyte solution to add to the water, and filtered water may be more appealing than tap water.

A veterinary diet formulated specifically for gastrointestinal conditions, highly digestible regular wet cat food, and home-prepared food are recommended. White fish and potatoes softened with fish cooking liquor are well-tolerated, but alternative protein sources may include skinless minced chicken or turkey, scrambled egg, rabbit or venison.

When should I be worried about my cat’s diarrhea?

If your cat has severe, bloody diarrhea and/or is showing more generalized signs of illness such as weakness, fever, vomiting, abdominal pain, dehydration, or loss of appetite, the problem may be very serious and medical attention should be sought as soon as possible.

Can lack of food cause diarrhea in cats?

Stop Feeding. It’s important not to withhold food from your cat, especially if they are experiencing diarrhea. While their stool might look loose, the cause of diarrhea is typically because of insufficient nutrition. By withholding food from your cat you could cause other problems such as liver conditions or psychological conditions.

Add Fiber & Prebiotics. In some cases you might need to reinforce your cat’s meals with prebiotic fibers such as inulin or psyllium. These can help prevent or stop diarrhea by helping your cat absorb excess water and nutrients. These prebiotics can also help restore the beneficial bacteria that might be missing from their gut microbiome.

What happens if a cat doesn’t eat for 4 days?

How long can my cat go without eating?. Like people, cats can go longer without food than water. Cats can survive for about two weeks without eating but only three days without drinking. The longer your cat goes without proper nutrition, however, the weaker they become, so it’s important to contact your vet if you suspect they haven’t eaten in a day or more. They will be able to diagnose the cause and hopefully get your cat back on track to eating regularly.

How can I get my cat to eat?. There are several things you can try to see if your cat will begin eating again.

  • Considering stress can be a cause, ensure their dish is in a quiet area.
  • Check to make sure both their food and water bowls are clean.
  • Give them canned or “wet” food, or meat baby food.
  • Try drenching their solid food with the juice from a tuna can.
  • Cat’s don’t like cold food, so you can try heating it (just be sure to mix carefully after to avoid overly-hot areas).

Why is my cat’s poop runny and smelly?

Very smelly stools usually mean that something’s out of balance in the digestive system. This can range from not tolerating the diet well to inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatitis, liver disease, parasites, stress, or other systemic disease.

Metallic smells usually indicate that iron is in the stool, which can be a sign of blood in the stool.

Treating diarrhoea in cats Always provide your cat with fresh clean water. ‘Rest’ the gut by withholding food (but not water) for 24 hours then slowly reintroduce a highly digestible diet in small meals. A cat should not be deprived of food for more than 24 hours as this can be detrimental.
