Will Taking Medications Containing Apple Cider Vinegar Cause Diarrhea?

5.0 rating based on 149 ratings

Apple cider vinegar is a natural antibiotic that can be used in cooking and as a treatment for diarrhea caused by bacterial infections. However, it is unclear whether it is safe to use for the treatment of diarrhea. The Mayo Clinic warns that apple cider vinegar may interact with insulin, diuretics, and other medications or supplements. The Canadian Digestive Health Foundation states that apple cider vinegar may cause unpleasant digestive symptoms in some people.

In the short term, acetic acid decreases appetite, but more is needed. Consuming apple cider vinegar in small amounts is unlikely to cause diarrhea, as its acidity can irritate those with sensitive stomachs. Common supplements that cause diarrhea include vitamin C, zinc, and fish oil. Diarrhea causes fluid and electrolyte losses, leading to dehydration. The best things to drink for diarrhea are clear liquids like water and electrolyte-containing drinks.

Apple cider vinegar has some benefits, such as having an antibiotic property that helps cure diarrhea by killing diarrhea-causing organisms in the intestine. However, it can also have the opposite effect if taken in excess. If taken undiluted, apple cider vinegar may pull water into the bowel, making the stool more watery.

Apple cider vinegar may also help boost weight, but excessive consumption could lead to unwanted side effects such as throat irritation, tooth damage, and diarrhea. As a fermented product, apple cider vinegar acts like a probiotic and can improve digestive health, reducing symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. However, it can cause digestive issues like nausea, indigestion, and diarrhea, especially when consumed in large amounts.

What benefits does apple-cider vinegar provide for the body? While more data is needed to definitively say that ACV offers health benefits, some data suggests that it may help support healthy blood sugar levels, weight-management goals and heart health. It may also have antimicrobial effects.

Apple-cider vinegar, often referred to as ACV, is a staple in many kitchens for its culinary properties, being an acidic addition to salad dressings, sauces and so much more. And in the wellness world, some people tout apple-cider vinegar as a natural Jack-of-all-trades remedy, suggesting that it can be a solution for many ailments, including digestive concerns, obesity and more.

Since being brought to market as an approachable natural remedy in the early 1900s by Dr. Paul C. Bragg (yes, the same name you see on many ACV bottles), this vinegar’s popularity in the wellness space has exploded in recent years, with half of all Americans saying that they currently are using or have used it for health and wellness reasons, per a 2022 poll conducted by Bragg Live Food Products, Inc.

How long should I wait to eat after taking apple cider vinegar pills?

While there is no scientific evidence to suggest that taking ACV in the morning is more beneficial than doing so at any other time of the day, it can boost your digestion. As soon as you wake up in the morning, have ACV that is diluted in lukewarm or room temperature water on an empty stomach. Hooda believes it best to keep a gap of 20-30 minutes before eating and drinking anything after this and assures that it doesn’t hamper your exercise pattern. The other option is to take it in pill form. “ACV supplements contain a dehydrated form of vinegar. If a person dislikes the strong taste or odour of liquid apple cider vinegar, they may prefer pills instead. The amount of ACV in the tablets varies depending on the brand. Some brands may contain additional metabolism-boosting substances, such as cayenne pepper,” says Canday. As with anything, moderation is key, even though ACV can be had without needing a break. “Using ACV in large amounts or even undiluted can be harmful to your dental and gut health since it is highly acidic. When you are consuming ACV by itself, make sure it is diluted, i. e., 1-2 tbsp in 200 ml of water,” she adds.

While ACV’s benefits are undeniable, Ganeriwal cautions against considering it a magic potion for weight loss. “Your lifestyle, which includes your food, exercise, sleep, and breathing practices, have to be in place first. Only then can ACV help. It cannot help on its own if your lifestyle is not in order to begin with,” she warns.
