Gastritis is an inflammation of the stomach lining, often caused by bacteria or an autoimmune disorder. It is a common condition that can cause abdominal pain and bloating, and can be triggered by ECL cell hyperplasia in the stomach. Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) is a condition where histamine leaks into the bloodstream, causing chronic urticaria. Gastritis does not cause a rash but is the stomach’s reaction to excess acid or bad gastrointestinal complaints.
Leaky gut can cause symptoms like hives, which can be managed through diet changes, avoiding triggers, and treating underlying conditions. Studies have found a link between H. pylori infection and chronic urticaria, which is defined as spontaneous wheals for more than six weeks and is the most frequent skin disease.
In summary, gastritis is an inflammation of the stomach lining that can cause abdominal pain and bloating, and can be triggered by ECL cell hyperplasia in the stomach or chronic spontaneous urticaria. It is important to note that gastritis does not cause a rash but is a reaction to excess acid or bad gastrointestinal complaints.

📹 Is Your Eczema Coming from a Salicylate Sensitivity? – Dr. Berg On Atopic Dermatitis
In this video, Dr. Berg talks about one common cause of eczema: Salicylate sensitivity. This is a natural acid present in plants, …
Can a stomach virus cause hives?
In some cases, the virus can trigger hives (urticaria). It can start out with itchiness and quickly morph into red welts. You know it’s hives when you press on the bump and its center turns white. Hives can be treated with antihistamines. You can also use a cold compress to temporarily relieve itching.
Infants with diarrhea are susceptible to diaper rash. Diarrhea stools can carry certain digestive enzymes that irritate the skin. You can cut down on this irritation by changing your baby’s diapers frequently and cleaning their skin thoroughly with warm water. Using a barrier cream after each diaper change can also be helpful. Avoid baby wipes that contain alcohol. Consult with your pediatrician if the rash continues to worsen or your infant’s skin is bleeding.
Severe diarrhea can also cause adults to develop a rash around their anus. Keep the area as clean and dry as possible. Wash with mild soap and warm water. Call your doctor if the skin in this area blisters or oozes. The rash should clear up after the diarrhea subsides.
Why am I breaking out in hives if I’m not allergic to anything?
Histamine is the reason that hives form. You can also get hives for a variety of other reasons. Some of these include having an infection, stress or physical pressure on your skin. It’s not uncommon for healthcare providers to be unable to determine exactly what caused your hives.
What are hives?. Hives are raised red bumps (welts) or splotches on the skin. They’re a type of swelling on the surface of your skin and happen when your body has an allergic reaction. Allergic reactions happen when your immune system comes in contact with an allergen. Allergens are proteins that are harmless to many people but cause an allergic reaction in sensitive people.
Hives are often very itchy, but you might also feel burning or stinging. They can be as small as a fingertip or as big as a dinner plate. The medical name for hives is urticaria.
Sometimes, the welts from hives join together to form larger areas called plaques. Hives tend to fade within 24 hours, although they may be noticeable for several days or longer.
Are hives related to gut health?
Your gastrointestinal lining is the first barrier of defense and 70% of your immune system lies within your GI tract. Increased intestinal permeability can lead to poor immune resilience and increased susceptibility to infections.
Changes in your overall motility, as well as increased gas production and fermentation from an imbalance of microbial flora, can occur when there is increased intestinal permeability.
Inability to concentrate, irritability, as well as anxiety, and depression, may occur with toxins and bacteria crossing the blood-brain barrier.
How to tell if hives are autoimmune?
Specific tests for autoimmune hives include:Basophil histamine release assay: A blood test that measures the release of histamine from basophils, a type of white blood cell, after exposure to stimuli. Autologous serum skin test: This test detects circulating autoantibodies released in response to histamine production.
Autoimmune hives (urticaria) are a type of rash caused by an overactive immune system that attacks healthy skin. It may be associated with an autoimmune condition, such as autoimmune thyroid disease.
Hives are itchy red, skin-colored, or pale welts that can erupt without warning. They’re rarely dangerous but can be uncomfortable, especially if they recur often.
It can be challenging to figure out what triggers these itchy occurrences, although allergens can sometimes be a cause. When the reason for hives remains unknown, they’re said to be idiopathic.
Can internal issues cause hives?
Other conditions that may cause chronic hives include: Asthma. Infections like H. pylori bacterial infections and sinus infections (sinusitis).
What are chronic hives (chronic idiopathic urticaria)?. Chronic hives are itchy, raised, red bumps or welts that appear on your skin at least twice per week. These welts, also called wheals, are chronic when they last more than six weeks.
You may hear this condition called chronic idiopathic urticaria:
- Chronic: A symptom or condition that persists even with treatment.
- Idiopathic: The symptom or condition occurs for no known reason. It comes on suddenly.
- Urticaria: The medical term for hives, pronounced ur-tik-CARE-ee-uh.
Can acidity trigger hives?
Something that you ate may cause heartburn, but if you are also allergic to that food, it may cause hives as well. Sometimes the reverse may be true and you may be having an allergic reaction to something else and that reaction may be triggering heartburn. This may be a little hard to sort out, but your doctor can get to the bottom of it.
While the list below can be considered as a guide to educate yourself about these conditions, this is not a substitute for a diagnosis from a health care provider. There are many other medical conditions that also can be associated with your symptoms and signs. Here are a number of those from MedicineNet:
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), also called acid reflux, can cause symptoms like heartburn, chest pain, regurgitation, and nausea. Learn about causes, diagnosis, treatment and prevention.
Can gastrointestinal problems cause hives?
Leaky gut syndrome is when the intestinal tract allows toxins to flow out of the gut into the bloodstream. It’s often associated with conditions of the digestive system, like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
Leaky gut can cause many symptoms, including hives. Diet changes, avoiding triggers, and treating underlying conditions may help you get rid of chronic hives.
Your intestines play an essential role in your overall health. They ensure that toxins and food particles stay out of your bloodstream while nutrients get through.
However, sometimes the intestinal barrier becomes “leaky,” allowing toxins to enter the bloodstream. Researchers call this intestinal permeability.
Can high inflammation cause hives?
Inflammation of the blood vessels, or vasculitis, can also cause hives. These hives are more painful than itchy, may leave a bruise on the skin and often last more than a day.
Life’s too short to struggle with hives. Find answers with an allergist.
Can gastritis cause hives?
Gastritis Can Cause and Trigger Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria Independent of the Presence of Helicobacter pylori. Semen Zheleznov et al. Int Arch Allergy Immunol. 2018.
Background/aim: In chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU), Helicobacter pylori (HP) has been discussed as a cause, but it is unknown whether the bacterium itself or concomitant inflammation is causing the urticaria. Our aim was to investigate HP and upper gastrointestinal lesions as signs of inflammation independently of each other in the pathogenesis of CSU.
Methods: A total of 36 prospectively enrolled CSU patients from Moscow were investigated by gastroscopy and screened for the presence of HP and/or upper gastrointestinal lesions. Those having a positive result were treated according to the Maastricht III recommended guidelines for eradication therapy, and success was assessed by a follow-up gastroscopy. Simultaneously, the activity of CSU was measured before and after therapy of the gastrointestinal condition.

I had some sort of rash on both my shins for almost a year. Started taking vitamin D3, K2, and C. Rash went away in about 2 weeks. Stopped taking it and rash started coming back after a few weeks. Now I take them every other day. No more rash and my rough skin is super soft now. Big thx to Dr. Berg !
When making articles like this listing foods to avoid, you should give sample meal replacement ideas to lessen the overwhelm of losing such staple foods in ones diet.. being paleo I can’t imagine loosing squash and sweet potatoes, almonds, zucchinis, cinnamon or broccoli.. but I have a really itchy bothersome scalp, low horomones and hair loss… at a loss for what to do.
I haven’t had flares for sometime. Ketovoire now. It is connected to asthma. Twice when having a family disagreement (1 with Mom; 1 with child.. ) my palm began itching and had immediate flare up ! Sunlight helps clear it up, so is there a D3 connection? I take Berg’s D3K2 everyday; have for 4 years. I had covid Feb 2022; doctor: “Your lungs are good and all your organs are fine.” This was day 10. I was nauseous and dehydrated but had no breathing problems. In 2012 doctor told my alveoli were collapsing and they didn’t know why. I know why: overweight and “prediabetic.” Not anymore! Haven’t needed inhalers for almost 4 years! Thank you, Dr Eric Berg and may God on High lead you into all Truth and bless you and your family!
Nothing could help me with eczema, I had roughly 70% of my body covered with spots, I mean… my whole hand was an eczema and rash, I was just sitting and thinking of a time when I die because it was unbearable, but then I got to the proper clinic/hospital and gone though the steroid, hormone and antibiotic treatment with no food for 3 weeks. Next were adsorbents, antihistamine and a very strict diet. It took 1 year to recover and get rid of any mark from my condition. Once you’ve passed a certain moment you can’t stop the eczema or related causes naturally, only intensive medical treatment, don’t wait untill your DNA gets mutated and your eczema become chronic or autoimmune.
Ty, i had a feeling it was the spices, i have been drinking cayenne, cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, in with my normal lemon and garlic water each day, and wondered why i started getting really bad Dermatitis, on my legs, thanks Dr Berg… the Keto is going great tho, lost a stone of body water so far in the past couple of months, just need to burn off my belly fat… Thnx again.
Thank you so much! My naturopath suggested almond oil for my skin and a chronic muscle injury, because it’s anti-inflammatory. I used it for years, but always had a very sensitive stomach. I couldn’t eat fruits and vegetables. Eliminating almond oil has made a really big difference. Maybe I can finally gain a little weight. I only weigh 110 pounds, which is just barely surviving.
Since starting Keto a year ago I was making taco salads frequently. I started getting eczema around my hairline and I tried so many other things to treat it. It was the freaking chili powder!! Once I saw this list immediately my brain told me it was the chili:( I don’t have issues with any of the other spices but somehow my brain knew exactly what it was. I’ve been off the chili powder for a while now and the rash is completely gone but I love my taco salads!!!
Damn right! I’ve recently changed to a plant based diet and have seen and felt the difference. Only problem is that almost 80% of the foods on your list are my staple foods. Any suggestions for alternatives? I’m now in my fifties and my acne has finally gone and the raging furnace of eczema has stopped.
I’ve suffered from eczema and a few other things. I visited my local naturopath because I was suffering from interstitial cystitis to see if he could help me. Ask for a food sensitivity test and you will find out what foods are causing inflammation in the body. I was sensitive to gluten and a number of other things. As soon as I stopped eating gluten, my eczema disappeared in a number of weeks. I also had a low adrenal problem, and when the adrenals are fixed you can go back to eating these foods again in moderation.
Thank you for doing this article! I’ve had salicylate sensitivity my entire life, but didn’t know I had it until several years ago. It even caused me anxiety, which cleared after going on the diet. I suffered needlessly and very few doctors have even heard of it. There is the Fiengold Diet for people who have this. Also, stay away from all preservatives.
Worthwhile to also mention Salicylic acid in skincare products or shampoos and also in certain cleaning supplies For those of us v sensitive to it, just breathing it in at times can cause symptoms And sadly, the list of foods containing salicylates is more exhaustive Foods such as green olives contain high amounts Black olives do as well but at lesser amounts Olive oil does too Black tea also and content in black tea higher than in coffee But decaf coffee is ok I think for those of us v sensitive to it, def worthwhile to do more research It’s hard to avoid and one can never avoid it completely, but one can get the hang of it and avoid the foods with highest amounts to get relief
I have ezcema.but i think streriod cream make.this worse.. will you make a article sir. How to stop steriod. That can prevent not too much flair up or bad ezcema. From now we have group chat of fb and all peopel there thousand suffer to ezcema with the use to steriod cream and i really want to share.if ever sir, you can make article how prevent this steriod withdrawl. God bless and we all love you.
If you’ve been eating/drinking something for decades, can it create eczema later in life or is the reaction more immediate? How long after removing the offending food item should you start to notice an improvement? Fortunately most of that list will be easy for me to eliminate. In general though, eating *anything* is really difficult when you’re both vegetarian and gluten sensitive. Coffee will be the big challenge 😅 But I’m willing to try!
Dear Dr Berg, thank you for your articles, is there any information on Scalp dermatitis, or scalp folliculitis? I have been having flare ups since 12 years, I am 33 years old now, Male. I am trying to figure out what is causing the flare ups, but I just dont know. One could be when ever i go for a haircut, the razor they use cause pimples like looking on the back of my scalp, but sometimes it happens few weeks after a haircut as well. I am a big foodie, and I enjoy eating everything
I forget what the dermatologist said I had, but it dry red, scaly spots that I pick off. I don’t want to go back to the dermatologist because they’ll do a full body scan and decide to take specimens. I’ve had acne since 13 and I’m sick and tired of it at 71 years old. Those doctors don’t heal anything.
Doing I.F I started eating lots of cucumber salads and at meal times, I included peanuts as part of my daily meal. Last September I got such a bad bout of ezcema that it got infected and I got wounds on the top of my foot and on my leg. I changed my diet and thankfully it reduced. Now when I have even a little peanuts, I start itching😔 I love peanuts but it seems I have to say bye bye to it. I found that rubbing coconut oil or olive oil where the itch is helps stop.
It is extremely hot and humid in my country right now and I am having a flare up. I think heat and perspiring causes skin to lose moisture too and perhaps trigers a flare-up? However, have to mention that I have been in the garden a lot in the past few weeks and have been consuming lots of the items mentioned too😔
Well that knocked out about all the spices I use while cooking. Glad I dont have eczema, lol. I have more of centered skin problem. Blisters on my wrists when I wear long sleeve anything for long periods. Just on the wrists though. Thinking laundry detergent irritation. Ive never had skin problems up until I contracted pytariosis rosea, then after, bam, all kind of weird temporary stuff.
Do all of those in supplement form affect as well? I take majority in supplements such as oregano, turmeric and ginger, and then the greens in a super food powder as a drink. I used to believe I was allergic to alcohol when I was 21, one glass made me sick one time on a date and another on my mom’s birthday, sending me straight to the bathroom along with cold sweat and chills. I didn’t drink at all until I turned 26 because I just don’t have that inner wish to drink anyway, but I do work as a pourer in a winery/brewery and taste every once in a while to see if it’s still pourable, or have a glass every couple of weeks to accompany friends after the shift is over. Recently, at 28, I feel like I might be allergic again, and with just 1 glass. 🤦🏻♀️ I wonder what specific ingredient that is.
Ibuprofen and NSAIDs can do more harm if your have this sensitivity. For pain etc I take a turmeric capsule even though I have this sensitivity… far better than ibuprofen which does more harm than good (for me). You just need to consume fewer foods (per day/week) that are moderate to high. Pay attention if you order a pizza! (toppings)
I aske ChatGPT to give me examples of 100 products rich in salicylates, and there are almost any vegetables, fruits, and nuts. So what should I eat then?! By the way I asked about cucumber and it says that, quote: “Cucumbers typically do not contain high levels of salicylates, and they are often recommended in the diets of people who suffer from salicylate sensitivity or allergies to them.”. So this theory of salicylates sensitivity is really weird for me. And if that’s true, then maybe that’s the reason why Atopic Dermatitis is no no cure :/
My eczema is and was “milk”. related. I cut dairy and it went away, after it healed. If I drink milk or even why powder.. it comes back. Many have it cause of dairy, even babies that have it, that are on mothers milk… I saw a article of a mom trying to heal her daughter,… and then she stopped all milk and the babies rash went away. It does not come up positive on their tests… I think it needs that special test, forgot what it is called.
Searching for a reason after putting my wife on a Carnivore Diet, she suddenly has rash on her entire face. Burning and itching. I was hoping an elimination diet would heal her normal eczema but something wildly severe broke out. So now im confused. Its not a keto rash as its in the face only. Sad for her.
Please do a article on exzema and skin discoloration and mast cells releasing histamines. Can MCI allergy be reversed. Please help. My skin is coming off my body. I have been on keto for 9 years. Eat alot of grass fed beef. Skinny, always eat healthy never eat out. Just started your keto n intermittent fasting a few days ago. Im trying to do this nateral.
