Can Honey’S Enzymes Treat A Cold?

3.0 rating based on 112 ratings

Honey has been used as a natural treatment for upper respiratory infections, particularly coughs, for thousands of years. Anecdotal evidence suggests that honey can be used to treat colds and coughs, and it may be a better alternative to over-the-counter medicines. Researchers have found that honey is more effective in relieving symptoms than antibiotics and over-the-counter medicines. The antimicrobial ingredients in honey may directly fight the pathogen causing the cold, and it is viscous and coats and soothes an irritated throat.

A new systematic review of 14 previous studies found that honey appears to be a preferable treatment for cough or cold symptoms rather than antibiotics and over-the-counter medicines. Eating Manuka honey regularly may help protect against a cold by creating an inhospitable environment in the mouth, throat, and lower respiratory system for invading viruses and bacteria. A meta-analysis asked whether honey eases cough and other cold symptoms, but there are not enough data to form conclusions.

Honey has a potential therapeutic role in the treatment of disease by phytochemical, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. A spoonful of honey can be quite soothing and might even reduce symptoms from an upper respiratory tract infection, according to a review of studies. Manuka honey is often touted as a “superfood” that treats many ailments, including allergies, colds and flus, gingivitis, sore throats, staph infections, and more.

Incorporating Manuka honey into your diet is a great way to support your immune system due to its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Although honey won’t cure a cold, it does have benefits and may relieve certain common cold symptoms.

What are enzymes in honey good for?

Did you know that raw organic honey contains over 5000 enzymes that immediately begin to detoxify the body on entry, aid digestion and break down fat?

Enzymes are molecules naturally present in the body that help to break apart substances so that they can be used by the body. They usually end in the letters “-ase.”

For example, lactase breaks down lactose (milk sugar) and lipase breaks down lipids (fats).

All living things produce their own enzymes. Without these enzymes we would not be able to sustain life.

Does honey actually help with colds?

Does It Work?. There is no evidence that honey or cinnamon, taken together or separately, can cure a cold. There also isn’t research showing these ingredients can shorten the duration of a cold or prevent one from starting in the first place.

That said, there is some evidence that cinnamon and honey could ease certain cold symptoms. For generations, the two have been mixed together to create a homemade remedy for symptoms like sore throat, cough, congestion, and other cold symptoms.

The common cold is a respiratory infection caused by hundreds of different viruses. Colds typically last seven to 10 days and go away independently. There is no known medication or herbal remedy that effectively cures the cold.

Possible Benefits. Both cinnamon and honey contain anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidants that may help ease cold symptoms while your body fights off the virus.

Is 2 tablespoons of honey a day too much?

Honey is still a form of sugar and intake should be moderate. The American Heart Association recommends that women get no more than 100 calories a day from added sugars; men no more than 150 calories a day. This is a little over two tablespoons for women and three tablespoons for men.

Honey may contain botulinum endospores that cause infant botulism, a rare but serious type of food poisoning that can result in paralysis. Even pasteurized honey has a chance of containing these spores. For this reason, it is recommended that infants under 1 year do not consume honey.

Cold remedies that workDrink plenty of fluids. Water, juice, clear broth or warm lemon water with honey helps loosen stuffiness, called congestion. … Rest. Your body needs rest to heal. Sip warm liquids. … Try honey. … Add cool moisture to the air.

Cold remedies are almost as common as the common cold. But do they work? Nothing can cure a cold, which is caused by germs called viruses. But some remedies might help ease your symptoms and keep you from feeling so bad. Here’s a look at some common cold remedies and what’s known about them.

Cold remedies that work. If you catch a cold, expect to be sick for 1 to 2 weeks. That doesn’t mean you have to feel awful. The following might help you feel better:

  • Drink plenty of fluids. Water, juice, clear broth or warm lemon water with honey helps loosen stuffiness, called congestion. These also help prevent losing too much fluid, called dehydration. Don’t drink alcohol, coffee and sodas with caffeine. They can make dehydration worse.
  • Rest. Your body needs rest to heal.
  • Sip warm liquids. Many cultures use warm liquids, such as chicken soup, tea or warm apple juice, for colds. Warm liquids might ease stuffiness by increasing mucus flow.
  • Try honey. Honey may help coughs in adults and children who are older than age 1. Try it in warm tea or lemon water.
  • Add cool moisture to the air. A cool-mist vaporizer or humidifier can add moisture to your home. Moisture might help ease stuffiness. Change the water daily. Clean the unit as the maker instructs.

What are the disadvantages of raw honey?

Infants less than one year old should not be fed any types of honey. Furthermore, some people believe raw honey is free from bacteria due to its anti-microbial properties. In fact, honey including raw honey can contain the spore forming bacterium, Clostridium botulinum, that causes intestinal botulism (also called infant botulism). Intestinal botulism mainly affects children less than one year old. Early symptom is constipation, followed by lethargy, difficulties in feeding, generalised muscle weakness and weak cry. While most cases require hospitalisation, fatal cases are rare.

  • Advice to public. Buy honey from a reliable source or apiary.
  • For the sake of prudence, people who are allergic to pollen or with severe seasonal allergies (hay fever) are not advised to eat raw honey.
  • Grayanotoxin-containing honey may cause a burning sensation in the throat, and honey with bitter or astringent taste should be discarded.
  • Travellers to areas such as the Black Sea region of Turkey, North America, Korea, Japan, Nepal and New Zealand should pay special attention as there have been reported cases of grayanotoxin poisoning which were attributed to honey from these areas.
  • Avoid feeding honey to infants less than one year old.

Advice to Trade. The trade should ensure that their honey products, whether imported or locally produced, comply with local regulation concerning food safety and are fit for human consumption;

Does honey break up mucus?

Researchers at UCLA suggest taking 2 teaspoons of honey at bedtime. It’s believed that the sweetness of honey triggers your salivary glands to produce more saliva. This may lubricate your airways, easing your cough. Honey may also reduce inflammation in the bronchial tubes (airways within the lungs) and help break up mucus that is making it hard for you to breathe.

Mixing 1 teaspoon with 8 ounces of hot water; have this two or three times a day. Be careful not to make the water too hot.

Mixing 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon powder with a teaspoon of honey and having it right before bedtime. Honey and cinnamon may help remove phlegm from the throat and give your immune system a boost.

Is Lidl manuka honey real or fake?

Lidl Deluxe Manuka Honey. Lidl Deluxe Manuka Honey MGO costs £5. 55 for a 250g jar, which works out to £2. 35 per 100g. The label says it is 100 percent pure and authentic New Zealand Manuka Honey. This had a plastic seal around the lid. It was much sweeter than the other two honeys. It wasn’t as smooth and velvety as the Aldi version so it didn’t feel as luxurious but it was equally runny.

I tried it for a week and didn’t notice any changes. It certainly didn’t help to get rid of my cold and cough. I did, however, take a spoonful of it each evening before bed and it seemed to help calm my tickly cough during the night. It didn’t shift the bug, however.

Overall verdict. It was hard to tell how much of an impact this honey was having. I did return to the Holland & Barrett version after completing the two weeks of Aldi and Lidl’s versions and could feel a difference in my gastric health again so it was definitely doing something. My cold symptoms eased too although they returned again when I stopped taking it.

  • I’m a peritoneal dialysis patient and just started drinking boiled cinnamon sticks with honey every morning. My sleep issues have gone away, I’ve dropped a few pounds and my blood pressure has gotten better. I never knew the benifits of this tea that my Mom would make all of the time when I was a kid, I’m glad I rediscovered this delicious drink

  • After going through some of the comments, I see that some people don’t realize what differentiates raw honey from processed honey, and that is why so many people are saying that they add their raw unfiltered honey to hot tea or coffee, raw unfiltered honey means that it’s not heated to the point where most of the beneficial properties of the honey are destroyed, so when you take your raw honey and put it in your very hot coffee or tea, your honey is not raw honey anymore, and it loses most of the amazing benefits that honey naturally has, unless you drink your hot beverages at a temperature of 140° or less, for reference water boils at a temperature of 212°, and the average temperature of a Starbucks hot beverage is about 160 degrees.

  • I kept bees when I lived on a small family ranchette in Thousand Oaks, CA. I learned the “Keeping” from a good friend. The local fire department let me know when swarms were reported and I collected them. The area I lived in had a small river/stream and grass lands. Some times the honey was wild flower and sometimes it was from the poison oak pollen. Both were delicious. The comb on the hive panels were separated with a hot knife and then run through a centrifuge. I never processed the raw honey in any way, it was just poured into Mason Jars and stored at room temperature. I also collected the bee pollen collected from the bees by a narrow screen as they entered the hive. Both the honey and the pollen are good for your health in moderation. It was a great and tasty hobby that helped feed my young family. Bees are quite “tame” as long as you obey their rules. Rule #1 – never mow the grass close to the hive on a hot summer day! They fly faster than you can run! Rule #2 – always wear “White” protective garments and a screened hat with gloves, tape the pants to the top of your boots and your gloves to your cuffs. Bees can get into any opening if agitated. A good friend of mine learned the hard way by wearing a dark grey/black outfit one day and was attacked and had to retreat. Rule #3 – Always work with bees when it is cool in the morning or evening and use a smoker, they react to the smoke as a threat and quickly consume some honey which in turn makes them docile.

  • My everyday breakfast is made of 2 eggs+handful of walnut + honey on hand made wheat bread +green tea with one spoon of raw honey and I sprinkle some cinnamon powder on the egg because it will help reduce blood sugar which causes diabetes . And my father is 99 years old he does the same except with sour orange juice instead of tea. My father never takes any medicine and hates to see doctors and they don’t like him either because he is bad for their business!

  • Chapter 16, titled ‘The Bee,’ in Quran says “And thy Lord revealed unto the bee, “Take up dwellings among the mountains and the trees and among that which they build. Then eat of every kind of fruit, and follow the ways of your Lord made easy.” A drink of diverse hues comes forth from their bellies wherein there is healing for mankind. Truly in that is a sign for a people who reflect.”

  • I have been doing all kinds of informative cleanings to see which one I like best. The trial and error is pretty amazing. I finally am content with what I decided for me medically. It feels great. My body is a little tired after finally getting relief after years and years of Doctors giving me no relief. My Daughter was killed in the hospital overdrugged. I definitely qualify to seek my own medical relief. I feel great. Happy Holidays.

  • I used organic raw honey to get rid of my acid reflux in about a month, told a doctor about it and he said it should also help with allergies if it’s local grown because of the flowers that grow wherever you live. I have heard testimonials from allergy sufferers saying it totally helped them. Third if I feel my throat tightening up I take some and in about 5 mins. it will open back up (antiinflammatory being the reason I’m guessing?).

  • Great article… If you type in ‘Local bee keepers’ you will find a supply which is a little cheaper than supermarkets ~ a big HOWEVER will 100% raw honey without added sugar and has not been filtered. To keep it from crystalising keep in fridge. If it does crystalise slowly give it heat over a few days to make it runny again. Bee keepers do this to stop it changing it’s properties. Do not imerse in boiling water. Natural honey has an indefinate life and has been found in ancient Egyptian tombs many imes which is still edible! It has to remain in a sealed jary though. Have used local honey purchased from beekeepers for years and if I very rarely get a cold it is very mild. Also have had very few sore throats. Have a full tea spoon every day poured over porridge with a bananna and blueberries, all super foods.

  • Jonathan Eats the Honey 1 Samuel 14:24Now the men of Israel were in distress that day, for Saul had placed the troops under an oath, saying, “Cursed is the man who eats any food before evening, before I have taken vengeance on my enemies.” So none of the troops tasted any food. 25Then all the troops entered the forest, and there was honey on the ground. 26And when they entered the forest and saw the flowing honey, not one of them put his hand to his mouth, because they feared the oath. 27Jonathan, however, had not heard that his father had charged the people with the oath. So he reached out the end of the staff in his hand, dipped it into the honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes brightened.

  • In the Bible you can read about God leading Elijah and some of His Prophets to eat honey and they were refreshed and relieve from hunger, and restored their strength. (Proverbs 24:13; I Samuel 14:24-48; Proverbs 25:16; Judges 14:8-9; Mark 1:6; Matthew 3:4; Genesis 17:8; Exodus 3:8; Psalms 81:16; Genesis 43:11; Isaiah 7:15, 22; Deuteronomy 32:13; Exodus 16:31; Leviticus 20:24; Leviticus 2:11; Ezekiel 16:13-19; Deuteronomy 6:3)

  • Dropped a bill on Honey, bought raw organic, and never believed in healing benefits. But being been taking a spoon in the morning and at night. Can see the change in my attitude also my skin looks healthy. • I once read while researching the crusades decades ago that bodies of knights who were wounded in battle then died that the wounds were cleaned and dressed with HONEY they got this from the Arabs they were fighting. Honey has always held healing properties recognized even before the Egyptians. Go look it up. Be well. Be kind.

  • We believe Sri Lanka is one of the best places to source bee honey from. Firstly Sri Lanka is one of the world’s most bio-diverse locations so the honey is multi-floral on another level. And because of its rich history in Ayurveda (indigenous medicine) the majority of the pollen/nectar sources are medicinal in nature, imbuing the honey with almost all medicinal properties you seek in honey. In fact you will need to try many varieties to get the benefits of what you can find in Sri Lanka(n) Bee Honey. Secondly, Similar to tea or wine, the island also offers three distinct honey varieties, Dark, Amber and Gold from distinct climatic regions. Finally, we offer Sri Lanka’s only Regenerative Agriculture based bee honey – A system that connects local communities with home gardens and forest buffer zones.

  • Any one doing Keto know if a teaspoon of honey a day could disrupt a Keto Diet? I have Ulcerative Colitis, and have had great success controlling it with the Keto Diet (no medication) and eliminating almost all processed grains and sugars, while adding Tumeric, Ginger and Cinnamon, which seem to be recurring themes for digestion and inflammation. At my strictest, I lost 50lbs in less than 6 months.

  • 0:15 Raw honey, normal honey, processed honey.,.. Many types of honey… As far as I’m concerned there is HONEY and there is something that looks like honey… I’m from Serbia. In our culture HONEY was always considered more as remedy than food. I’m 50 years old and as far as I can remember it eating 1-2 teaspoons of HONEY(what you call raw honey straight out of HONEYCOMB) right after waking up was always considered as healthy habit to do. Outside of that HONEY was rarely used because of its scarcity.

  • I have a question. I always buy raw honey and what I have now is all sugared. I need to put the jar in warm water for several hours to melt it. What would be the highest temperature at which it is no longer considered raw? It comes in plastic bottles with openings too small for a teaspoon, & I usually transfer it to glass jars, but goofed this time.

  • Honey seems to be great for the eyesight as well as for weariness. So it seems in the narrative of certain passages of the Bible, such as those ones:1 Samuel 14:27 and 29, 27 But Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people with the oath: wherefore he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and dipped it in an honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were enlightened _ _ _ 29 Then said Jonathan, My father hath troubled the land: see, I pray you, how mine eyes have been enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey., or Proverbs 24:13, 13 My son, eat thou honey, because it is good; and the honeycomb, which is sweet to thy taste….

  • ABOUT HONEY IN THE QURAN Q 16 And thy Lord inspired the bee, saying: Choose thou habitations in the hills and in the trees and in that which they thatch; Then eat of all fruits, and follow the ways of thy Lord, made smooth (for thee). There cometh forth from their bellies a drink divers of hues, wherein is healing for mankind. Lo! herein is indeed a portent for people who reflect.

  • Yeah, the first thing that happens, is it jacks up the blood glucose level, to a point where LPL is activated, and HSL is deactivated, (LipoProtein Lipase drives fat storage,,,Hormone Sensitive Lipase releases fat from the adipose tissue (One can’t lose fat)). The next problem, is that the fructose goes directly to the liver, and is turned into FATTY LIVER DISEASE. It drives systemic inflammation, and there is no evidence whatsoever, that phytonutrients are bio available to humans. My cholesterol level is EXACTLY where it’s supposed to be, and regulates itself for our needs. Sugar INCREASES triglycerides, not lowers the level. Honey IS SUGAR. Honey causes FAT GAIN. Look, not only did you get some things wrong,,, you got many things 100% in the opposite direction as to what it really does. BOGUS, BOGUS, BOGUS.

  • For salvation, we just need to follow the way they did it in Acts? They were baptized in water for the removal of sins and filled with the Holy Ghost. Here’s why! The gospel is the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:1-4. If we are to follow him, we must do the same thing. Death= repentance, Burial = baptism, and resurrection = being filled and rising again from the dead. That’s what Acts 2:38 is. We must obey the gospel, 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9, in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that OBEY NOT THE GOSPEL of our Lord Jesus Christ… Matthew 7:21-23, Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that DOETH THE WILL OF MY FATHER which is in Heaven. St John 3:3-5, EXCEPT a man, be born of WATER AND OF THE SPIRIT, he cannot enter into the kingdom of GOD. We can’t come up with our own gospel. Galatians 1:8-9, But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. Don’t be cursed. One way for all people. Jews, Gentiles, and Samaritans. Our salvation has to match up with the scriptures and no scriptures on the subject can be taken away. Eternity is TOOO long to be WRONG! st, John 5:39, Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. The gospels show what Christ has done on the cross for us. The book of Acts shows us the beginning of Christ’s Church and how to enter the Church, obeying Acts 2:38.

  • I enjoy the articles and info its really great IMPORTANT info but unfortunately the choppy delivery makes it too hard to listen to, finish or want to listen to more articles. The delivery makes it impossible and is a very high tune out factor. Many times people subconsciously tune out not knowing why unfortunately I think this is so obvious even the common person would consciously be able to tell why they tuned out or won’t go listen to more articles no matter how good the information. Even when read it needs to flow like a conversation. Your content is so good I’d binged listen one after another and even repeat some articles and share them and really wish I could but it so choppy I can’t finish it. But after listening at various times to a couple articles it was hard to force myself to keep listening the delivery was so jangling and coming back it hadn’t improved I can’t even force myself to finish the article. Each sentence needs to flow into the next without such obvious stops.. It should not sound likes it’s read. The inappropriately timed inflections up and down throughout the sentences also are distracting and a definite tune out factor and is why the delivery sounds choppy too. To help you, study spots(commercials) of GOOD professional announcers who are reading off a script but don’t sound like it. Study how the script flows like they are having a conversation and study where their voice does and doesn’t go up and down or pause to emphasize…stress important parts. And copy them.

  • i don’t think so …. i been eating honey …. it’s not all that great ….. i am fat and lazy …. i just like the taste …. it doesn’t matter if you tell me to eat it …. cause i’m going to eat it ….. i have always eat honey …. maybe that why there’s no benefit …. my body is used to it ….. hell i going to start eating the bees …. jk ….. lol
