Do Dairy Products Cause Diarrhea?

3.0 rating based on 109 ratings

Dairy products, including milk and dairy-based protein drinks, can exacerbate diarrhea by triggering the digestive system and prolonging symptoms. Dairy products contain lactose, a sugar that the body digests with lactase enzyme. Drinks like caffeine, alcohol, and sugary drinks can also make diarrhea worse. Some fermented dairy products, like yogurt, may be helpful in alleviating acute episodes of diarrhea. The worst foods to eat with diarrhea include dairy products, sugar alcohols, and acidic, fried, or spicy foods. Yogurt or kefir, a fermented milk drink, are good choices despite being dairy products. Cooked eggs are also acceptable. Low-fat milk, cheese, or yogurt can help manage diarrhea.

Spicy foods and dairy products can worsen symptoms. Avoid fatty foods, milk, butter, ice cream, cheese, alcohol, high-fructose corn syrup sodas, artificial sweeteners, and excess fruits and vegetables. Milk contains lactose, which breaks down by lactase enzyme in presence of lactobacillus bacteria. Consuming too much dairy can cause nausea, stomach pains, and diarrhea, even if the person is not lactose intolerant. Consuming dairy products during diarrhea can lead to nausea, stomach pains, and diarrhea, so it is essential to avoid these foods and drinks.

What stops diarrhea fast naturally?

Bland, starchy, low-fiber foods like those included in the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) are binding, which can bulk stool and help get rid of diarrhea. Probiotics, glutamine supplements, or home remedies like herbal teas and rice water may also offer relief.

Remember, though, that diarrhea caused by a virus or bacteria will typically run its course in two to three days without treatment.

Over-The-Counter (OTC) Medications. OTC anti-diarrheal medications that can help stop diarrhea include:

You can bake or broil beef, pork, chicken, fish, or turkey. Cooked eggs are also OK. Use low-fat milk, cheese, or yogurt.

If you have very severe diarrhea, you may need to stop eating or drinking dairy products for a few days.

Eat bread products made from refined, white flour. Pasta, white rice, and cereals such as cream of wheat, farina, oatmeal, and cornflakes are OK. You may also try pancakes and waffles made with white flour, and cornbread. But don’t add too much honey or syrup.

You should eat vegetables, including carrots, green beans, mushrooms, beets, asparagus tips, acorn squash, and peeled zucchini. Cook them first. Baked potatoes are OK. In general, removing seeds and skins is best.

How soon after diarrhea can I eat dairy?

When suffering from diarrhea, your body loses a huge amount of water and nutrients it needs. You may also be unable to digest certain foods, which can make diarrhea even worse. So what can you eat, and when, after having diarrhea?

During the first few days, your digestive system won’t take well to foods you normally eat, like cooked meat, vegetables, fruits or dairy products. So it’s best to wait at least 24-48 hours before trying to reintroduce these foods to your stomach.

Electrolytes. The most important thing to do when suffering from diarrhea is drink lots of fluids or clear liquids. Your body has lost hydration and electrolytes are lost from the body, which can make you feel weak, fatigued, dizzy and cause leg cramps. Severe dehydration can lead to low blood pressure and even turn life-threatening if it leads to hypovolemic shock.

  • Keep sipping an over-the-counter oral rehydration solution or electrolyte sports drink throughout the day.
  • Aim to drink a cup of water after every loose bowel movement.
  • Stick to clear liquids, like clear broths, vegetable soup and decaffeinated tea.

Why is the BRAT diet no longer recommended?

The banana, rice, applesauce, and toast (BRAT) diet may help treat diarrhea, stomach flu, and other stomach complaints. However, many health professionals no longer recommend it due to the risk of nutrient and calorie deficiencies.

The foods in the BRAT diet are low in protein, fat, and fiber, which makes them easy to digest for most people.

In this article, we look at the benefits and risks of the BRAT diet. We also discuss less risky ways to treat diarrhea.

The term “BRAT” is an acronym for the foods in the diet, which are:

What’s the worst thing to eat when you have diarrhea?

  • Avoid high-fiber foods like beans, raw vegetables or fresh fruits like apples or peaches—they can be hard on your system.
  • Alcohol, caffeine and dairy products can all make diarrhea worse, so nix the cocktails, coffee and ice cream while your stomach recovers.
  • Ditto for greasy or spicy foods.
  • Finally, beware of hidden culprits. Diet sodas, sugarless gum and candy made with artificial sweeteners like sorbitol may trigger an unexpected trip to the toilet.

What to Drink. Sip water —lots of it—to replace the fluids you’re losing out of the other end. How do you know if you’re drinking enough? Use the pee test.

In general, you should pee at least every three hours, and the urine should be a pale straw color. “If you don’t need to pee or if your pee is dark, you need to drink more,” advises Katz. Just about any food will help replace lost electrolytes, but if you don’t feel like eating, Katz recommends drinking something with sodium and potassium, like a sports or pediatric electrolytes drink —just watch out for the added sugar. Seltzer water can be a great choice as well.

What Foods Help Diarrhea Go Away?White bread or toast. Clear broth. Coconut water. Plain pasta. White potato (peeled)Bananas. White rice. Canned pears.

While there aren’t foods that will make diarrhea go away or immediately firm your stools back up, there are foods you can eat to help settle an upset stomach. For many cases of diarrhea, a short-term diet of bland, “binding” foods, such as potatoes, rice, and bananas, can ease diarrhea symptoms.

One of the most familiar anti-diarrhea strategies is the BRAT diet (which stands for bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast). But other foods are just as useful, including soft-cooked eggs, low-fat yogurt, clear broths, plain pasta, and saltine crackers.

It is also essential to understand how to remain hydrated during diarrhea and when to seek medical care if symptoms become serious or your diarrhea persists.

What stops diarrhea fast?

What is the fastest way to cure diarrhea? Modifying your diet to eat plain, bland food; drinking water and other clear liquids; and taking anti-diarrheal medications may help you get rid of diarrhea quicker if your case is mild.

You usually don’t need medical treatment for diarrhea. In most cases, it will go away on its own in a few days. But there are some things you can do to treat it at home that can help it resolve faster and ease your symptoms. If you have the runs for more than a few days, or you have other symptoms, it might be a good idea to give your doctor a call.

Diarrhea should go away in a few days without treatment. Until you feel better, rest, drink enough of the appropriate fluids, and watch what you eat. Some foods can help stop your diarrhea, while others may make it worse.

Your body loses water with each trip to the bathroom. If you lose too much water, you can get dehydrated. It’s important to keep drinking fluids.

Is it good to drink milk during diarrhea?

Is it good to drink milk during diarrhea?

Avoid dairy products, high-fiber foods, spicy foods, fried foods, artificial sweeteners, caffeine, and caffeine-containing products during loose motions. Dairy products can elevate diarrhea, while high-fiber foods like broccoli, cauliflower, capsicums, peas, corn, and green leafy vegetables can be difficult to digest. Spicy foods should be seasoned with salt and black pepper, while pulses, chickpeas, legumes, and prunes can be difficult to digest.

It is essential to avoid artificial sweeteners and sugar substitutes, as they can have a laxative effect, contribute to gas and bloating, and increase the risk of loose motion. Avoid diet soda and sugar-free candy, as they can also increase the risk of loose motion and stomach ache.

Caffeine, found in beverages like coffee, Coke, and some green tea, can cause more harm than good during loose motions. It increases heart rate and is a diuretic, which can further dehydrate the body. Instead, focus on consuming the best food for loose motion.

Proper hydration is crucial for detoxification and rehydration, and most severe complications of loose motions are caused by dehydration. Drinking plenty of water, ORS, juices, and coconut water can help maintain proper hydration.

What is best to drink with diarrhea?

What is best to drink with diarrhea?

  • Drink 8 to 10 glasses of clear fluids every day. Water is best.
  • Drink at least 1 cup (240 milliliters) of liquid every time you have a loose bowel movement.
  • Eat small meals throughout the day, instead of 3 larger meals.
  • Eat some salty foods, such as pretzels, soup, and sports drinks.
  • Eat some high potassium foods, such as bananas, potatoes, and fruit juices.

Ask your health care provider if you should take a multivitamin or drink sports drinks to boost your nutrition. Also ask about taking a fiber supplement, such as Metamucil, to add bulk to your stools.

Your provider may also recommend a medicine to slow down your diarrhea. Take this medicine as you have been told to take it.

What foods harden your stool?

What foods harden your stool?

Soluble fibers, which turn into a gel during digestion, can firm up and slow down colonic transit time, especially beneficial for those with Type 5, 6, or 7 diarrhea. They can help prevent leakage associated with soft, frequent bowel movements. Sources of soluble fiber include oats, barley, rye, legumes, peeled fruits and vegetables, and foods that firm stool include banana, white rice, peeled apple, apple sauce, cheese, white pasta, white bread, tapioca, smooth peanut butter, potato, pumpkin, yogurt, pretzels, and marshmallows.

Insoluble fibers speed up digestion and are useful for treating constipation. They should be avoided or reduced if you have soft, frequent bowel movements or leakage. Major sources of insoluble fiber are wholegrain wheat, wheat bran, corn and wholegrain rice cereals, fibrous vegetables, and fruit skins. Foods that soften stool include vegetables, bran, high-fiber cereals, multigrain breads, fresh, canned, or dried fruit, chocolate, nuts, popcorn, greasy foods, juices, chille, curry, garlic, and sugar-free foods containing sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, diet drinks or ice-cream, and cough syrup.

To maintain a healthy bowel habit, it is important to check the Bristol Stool Chart to identify your stool type and consistency. Caffeine, alcohol, sugar-free or artificial sweeteners can speed up bowel movements and make stool softer than ideal, leading to sudden bowel urges, excessive wiping, or fecal leakage. Food intolerances to lactose, wheat protein, gluten, and fructose may also occur.

Will yogurt help diarrhea?

Will yogurt help diarrhea?

Yogurt can help prevent or treat diarrhea by containing probiotics, beneficial bacteria that can help prevent or treat various types of diarrhea. Infection-associated diarrhea can be reduced by up to 15 by consuming probiotics in the weeks before travel, while antibiotic-associated diarrhea can be reduced by up to 51 by taking probiotics and antibiotics. Probiotics found in yogurt can also reduce diarrhea caused by digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome or ulcerative colitis.

All fermented dairy products, including yogurt, contain bacteria that convert sugars into lactic acid through fermentation. Some yogurt manufacturers have added digestive bacteria to their products, such as Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium lactis, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus reuteri, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, and Saccharomyces boulardii. These strains are effective in preventing and treating diarrhea in yogurt.

In conclusion, yogurt can be a beneficial food for children with diarrhea, as probiotics can help prevent and treat diarrhea caused by infections. Additionally, probiotics found in yogurt can reduce diarrhea caused by digestive disorders like irritable bowel syndrome or ulcerative colitis. It is essential to note that not all yogurts contain probiotics, as some bacteria are not considered probiotics due to their ability to provide health benefits.

  • I had sudden onset acne in my early thirties. It was raging red and pulsating with pain. After several visits with various dermatologists, one diagnosed a dairy allergy. I stopped all dairy for six months and the acne cleared beautifully. So I started consuming dairy again. And the acne returned with its same vengeance. I quit dairy from then on and have remained acne free ever since.

  • I used to drink milk by the boatload, loved, loved, loved icecream and always had sinusitis to the point that I had to be hospitalized with a severe sinus infection that was traveling to my brain. When I asked my doctor if dairy was the cause of my sinus infection he told me no. I started listening to doctors like this and cut out the dairy and no longer need sinus medication because I don’t get sinus infections anymore.

  • I quit dairy products and sugar and it helped me tremendously in regulating weight, bloating issues, type 2 diabetes. I feel so light and active with these poisonous stuff out of my system. I use coconut milk for my tea. Thank you Dr. for such an informative article. I hope more people benefit from the information.

  • Thank you so much for all of the info in this article. I’ve been completely dairy free now for 3 years and I’ve never felt better in my life. My skin is now clear and I lost quite a bit of weight just from this single diet change alone. I highly encourage people with eczema to try this lifestyle, you will see and feel the difference 👌👍

  • I used to always have SINUS infections, and had lost my sense of smell, and I was getting sick often. I also felt like had ADD at times, and had many stomach issues. I gave up on dairy and gluten foods about 6 months ago, and within 3 days I got my sense of smell back! For the ones that are skeptical, just try it for a week, it’ll do wonders especially if you’re currently binging on those 2 food groups.

  • My husband has strange dairy allergy symptoms. He will be okay with the odd thin slice of cheese every 2-3 days until after about a fortnight, then he starts scratching his ankles and legs until the blood comes through. If he continues to eat cheese, the itchiness starts to appear around his waist too. For a long time, we didn’t know what was causing these itchy rashes, so he went on an elimination diet and luckily dairy was the first food on the list. 2 weeks later and all symptoms vanished.

  • My experience from cutting dairy was very positive.. as a 26 year old male who had been consuming dairy pretty much my whole life, I finally decided to quit. 6 months down the line, I’m no longer holding fatty weight on my body, and I’ve lost weight but not unhealthy weight, more like weight around my waist and around my face.. I now look much more healthier and I’m no longer feeling lethargic when I wake up in the morning. Also, it may sound weird but my erections are harder now! And my sex drive has increased greatly.. not sure if its because I’ve started eating more healthy stuff such as beans and lentils and no junk food but deep down I do believe its the cutting out dairy which contributed. Finally, MY IBS HAS DISAPEARRED! Why is it that I no longer feel the need to use the loo multiple times a day???? I now go once or twice, but when I was eating dairy I was going 3 to 4 times… never consuming dairy again that shit makes me feel horrible

  • We were served milk every day by our school as a routine matter. I drank milk all through my childhood and long into my young adult life. I was also completely bloated, gaseous, and my throat and nose closed up all the time giving me trouble breathing. God knows what else it did to me. I don’t understand how I didnt see the connection. What a waste of wellbeing.

  • ENT kept telling me I have a seasonal allergy and to do a daily sinus rinse to help get the toxins out. When I figured out or finally admitted I’m allergic to dairy and actually stopped consuming it. All of those “allergy” symptoms stopped. Dairy was also the reason for my life long battle with halitosis and thick white coating on my tongue that I couldn’t get rid of. I take calcium and vitamin d supplements daily.

  • The fact that this article is now 7 years old, and people are still not getting it. Thank you for describing this so eloquently and with so much facts to back it up. The USDA is an absolute disgrace. Veg since March 2016 and never felt better in my life – cleared up my IBS, chronic stomach issues, acne, and more.

  • 6 years ago I went dairy-free and got rid of arthritis. My hands were almost useless and I could hardly write my name. I was in and out of my wheelchair about 3 times a years, each time up to one month because of my back. In the last 6 years, I have had one incident where I had to use the wheelchair and it was due to a broken ankle, not my back. Non-dairy milks are good and I have tried most of them. I like almond, coconut and have some soy as I am post menopausal. My daughter-in-law claims that I don’t look a day older than when she first met me. She’s sweet but no one thinks I am as old as I am. I eat very little meat, some fish and chicken occasionally and do not feel deprived. Having pain is not where I want to be again. Now if I want a slice of pizza, I’ll have one. Not more. And I never want to go back to the pain I was living in.

  • When I lived in Japan my Japanese Girlfriend told me that her aunt is a Western trained nutritionist and that she was always telling her 12 year old daughter to drink milk, cheese, yogurt etc. so she’d get enough calcium! One day her daughter bumped her leg against the Kotatsu, a sort of low table that they sit at when sitting on the floor. She broke her leg. The doctor told them that she had the bones of an 80 year old woman! They were very porous! So all of the milk, cheese and yogurt didn’t do her a dang bit of good!

  • I struggled with painful adult cystic acne in my late 20s/early 30s, while waiting for a dermatologist(I still am), I became so depressed because one of my cystic acne spots became a huge(one inch in length, width and height) infected cyst on my face, it ruined my mental health, so I decided to take it on myself and watched hours of YouTube articles on other acne sufferers and every single person recommended cutting out diary, I then researched and watched dermatologists on YouTube to learn about skincare, I did months of my own research so I didn’t just take all information as truth. I had stopped drinking milk for over 10 years already but it was still in junk foods, pre-made coffees and cheese/cream, which is when I changed my diet to completely non-diary, sure enough less than 6 months later I have no active cystic acne. We don’t need cows milk full of hormones, we aren’t baby cows that need to grow. I no longer struggle with cystic acne, IBS, mood swings, leaky gut, joints problems, severe fatigue, constipation, migraines, sleep issues and sinus infections. Thank you for sharing this, we need more people to know, just because they don’t have a reaction on the outside like I did, doesn’t mean it’s not causing inflammation on the inside. Farming industries and the healthcare industries are making money on making us sick, you don’t need to believe everything you are being told, believe what your body is telling you.

  • Going dairy free, and Gluten-free was the best decision I made, it helped so much with my stomach problems etc. Also don’t forget, you need k2 to help the calcium into the bones! K2 is so underrated. Not just vitamin D, that raises the calcium level in the body. And also magnesium to keep the calcium in the bones and teeth. Bor is also important ✌️

  • I just ate my first dairy free baked potato I thought it would be unenjoyable to eat but I was surprised. I used organic pumpkin seed oil and olive oil to replace the butter and used lemon juice, jalepenos, chopped raw garlic, parsley, paprika, hot sauce, pepper flakes, salt and pepper and I enjoyed every bite. Usually I have sourcream, butter and cheese and my sinuses clog and my restless leg is triggered and I am gassy. I am happy I can still enjoy a baked potato.

  • Once I understood the dismal conditions of dairy cows, chained to tiny stalls where they cannot even turn around, having their calves taken from them…then I learnt that dairy increases bone fractures and contains naturally occurring growth hormones which fuel cancer cells in humans I became 100% vegan. My chronic sinus infection cleared up and I had much more energy and peace of mind. We are not meant to drink another species milk, cows milk is designed for a baby cow. Love yourself, be kind to animals and choose a healthy vegan diet with a wide range of fruits/vegs/beans/nuts/seeds/whole grains gluten free ideally ect.. limited processed food which will reduce your risk for cancers of all kinds, heart disease, strokes ect… All the best to everyone, wishing everyone optimal health.

  • I used to eat so much dairy as a kid and it was never really a problem for me, however now that i’m fully grown my body is becoming less tolerant to it and i now have problems with a cyst in my chest (and i’ve heard that dairy can be a cause of it). im hoping that going dairy free will allow me to stop it before it takes a turn for the worse

  • I gave up dairy around the summer of 2018. I had reduced my dairy intake years ago but in recent years even having just some of it made me tired and worsen my memory. I’ve had Lyme disease since the early 1980’s. People who have Lyme disease find that the best things they can do is eliminate wheat, dairy and sugar from their diets.

  • I have mostly been off of all dairy and felt better instantly. I survived Dr Hyman’s 10 day sugar detox. I continued with it and lost 22lbs in 6 weeks. That was a few months ago. I have to admit that I have fallen off the bandwagon and have eaten some dairy. I feel hung over the next day… Big Food is all over. I’m trying to continue eating whole food mostly. It takes preplanning and prepacking food to take with. But it’s worth it. And by the way, I have been a registered nurse for 28 years. Peace. 🙂

  • I’m surprised at the number of “thumbs down.” I’ve always had nothing but issues with dairy. Seems like a no brainer after putting it into perspective. Sure, there’s nutrients in it, but at what cost? I think it can sort of be addicting too which might be why some want to disagree because they just don’t want to give it up. That’s my guess. I love the elimination diet because you can really start to notice the problem foods and when I did this, a lot of issues disappeared including: digestive issues, acne, psoriasis, mood fluctuations, random inflammation/aches and pains throughout my body. Sometimes we just need to pay attention and notice the difference.

  • I’ve been (more or less) eating keto for the past decade and try to keep a watch on my weight and over all health. Recently I read a book titled “Eat to Beat Disease” by William W Li MD and his list of foods to regulate the body’s angio-genesis absolutely ignores the troubles caused by carbs and dairy. I wish I’d saved my money.

  • Throughout my whole life on and off i have suffered from really bad eczema especially outbreaks all over my face, the doctors continuously gave me steroid creams and antibiotics every time the eczema became infected, they told me it was stress related. Three years ago i met my now fiance who got the shits when consuming dairy products, out of convenience we both stopped consuming dairy… i have never in this 3 years had an eczema outbreak or even a little rash since!

  • After I stopped drinking milk my acne went away. Now after more research I have realized milk drinking does more harm than good. I have cut out milk but the other dairy products like cheese are not as easy. Either way, milk is the worst offender and I encourage people to change. I loved milk and cereal more than anyone. I ate it for breakfast, lunch and dinner sometimes. So believe me I have no ulterior motives.

  • In my early 20s I had no idea why every morning I was sick. As I got older I realized I was lactose intolerant and very allergic to it. I never eat it unless it’s been cooked like in cheesecake. Now I never get break outs, bloat after I got rid of dairy. I also used to have eczema badly and it cleared up too.

  • I’ve been totally dairy free for over a year. I started because I was breastfeeding my baby who had an allergy to cow’s milk protein. I’ve literally never felt better. I never feel bloated anymore, my skin has never been clearer, I not only lost the baby weight but am now slimmer than I’ve ever been. I rarely feel fatigued (even with a baby!), or irritable/crampy. I’m just one case, but I think it’s really worth cutting it out for 2 months and just observing the way your body responds!

  • I have to stay away from almost all carbs. This reduces my choices of food. When I hear discussions about dairy, it’s almost always aimed at milk specifically, but milk and dairy are used interchangeably. For example, the lactose intolerance isn’t a problem with cheese since the lactose is used by the cultures that make the cheese. I don’t like milk but to completely eliminate a food group like dairy I would have to be able to justify it. Also, I realize that there are usually hormones and pesticides in dairy, but this is true of any animal protein. And pesticides are found in vegetables and fruits too. So using that argument would reasonably extend to animal products altogether and many vegetables. I have to choose my battles or there would be nothing left to eat. OK, no milk. But probably I’ll continue to eat other dairy products.

  • I stopped eating most dairy (very rarely use parmesan) and most meat (on occasion eat fish). I eat absolutely all I want of the veggies, fruit, nuts, seeds. And even some olive oil on stuff. Went from 190 to 140 in one year. And I can tell you I totally stuff myself daily with whole foods, so I am not on any kind of reduced food diet. Blood pressure dropped like a rock! Feel great so far after one year. Feel really quick, clear thinking and light, at 59 years old. Read The China Study.

  • Thank You, I’m a big cereal and ice cream lover… And I couldn’t understand how my bones were so weak and I drink more milk than anybody I know… I’m surprised nobody has filed a lawsuit for false information by schools and doctors, this is really harmful to the body when you find out what it does.

  • That textbook just mentioned has a handy table which provides the # of servings of various foods necessary to provide the RDA of calcium for kids (1,200-1,300mg): Dairy: 4 servings; bok choy: 9.2; kale: 13; broccoli: 18; sardines: 2.6. Clearly, then, we need either dairy, sardines or supplements to get enough calcium. No realistic plant source can do it.

  • I went Vegan 21 years ago, at age 55. Threw out meat, eggs and dairy. Best thing I EVER did for my health. Artiritis and gout went away, and my meds for those things went in the garbage can. Over the next 5 years, I lost a whopping 50 pounds without even trying… the weight just came off ! During this process, I also added tTurmeric to my diet, which helped get rid of inflamation. (Turmeric must be cooked lightly in extra virgin olive oil, with black pepper added, to materially enhance the bio-uptake. I try to get about 1 teaspoon of the Turmeric+oil+pepper paste about once a day. )

  • Mark. You and I now clearly know the truth about saturated fat. You should make a article about the studies done showing the connection between sugar, refined carbohydrates along with high amounts of saturated fat. There is a big difference to the liver when you only eat whole raw milk products compared to milk with refined sugar or grains when it comes to heart disease risk factor. Not to mention how the mitochondria react differently in these two cases.

  • Dairy saved my life. I have UC and last year I had a nightmare of a flare up and I thought my life was coming to an end. But dairy helped me maintain my weight and after I healed up due to the grace of Jesus, I continued dairy products. Dairy helps my body so much and my body doesn’t reject it. I drink lots of milk, it fills me up and it soothes my digestive system and never in my life has it ever done any harm to me. Dairy was one of the only food groups I could eat during my flareup, most everything else would go straight through my body. But dairy always got absorbed because I could feel the energy from it. People are different, I’m someone who thrives with dairy. No doctor will ever fully understand the body.

  • I had sinus trouble” all my life, constant mucus, stuffy nose you name it I had it, so December 2016 I decided to switch to a plant base milk i.e. Almond milk————— 9 weeks later the improvement has been incredible, & this is no BS- For the first time in my life I can breathe properly through my nose. It has made a huge improvement). Check out the documentary FED UP On Netflix .

  • I had to go dairy free when I was breastfeeding. Milk caused blood in my baby’s stool and horrible cramps. As soon as I went dairy free I had less skin issues, less allergy issues and I noticed my digestive system functioned better. Plus it helped me shed the baby weight faster because it heavily limited the processed foods I could eat. Even the meats at KFC and Mc Donalds contain milk and no pizza for me.

  • I am and have always been a high consumer of dairy, growing up we had 13 pints of milk delivered every day for 7 of us, I eat 500g of cheese a week and 2 pints of milk a day, I have never been ill, I have never been on medication and never been overweight and probably in the best shape I have ever been at 57 years old though have been a vegetarian for 50 years and never touched alcohol, having said that I totally agree with all that you said I think I don’t want to push my luck and it’s time to quit dairy, not going to be easy and a little concerned that my weight will drop as i have managed to maintain my weight since my 20’s 5’10″ 165lbs I do eat a lot of nuts, Brazil’s, walnuts and pecans already so not sure what else I could eat to maintain my weight.

  • Mum grew up on a dairy farm and as a kid I was brainwashed into drinking raw milk, even at school we were quasi forced. Endless chronic infections were the result of feeding our bodies stolen food that was meant calves. Gave up milk at 45. Way too late, suffering from prostate cancer and chronic sinus blockages. I am still a cheese-aholic. However the slightest amount of fresh dairy cream is already making me sick. Sadly they taken all cream substitutes off the market where I live. I 2007 I went on a 3 week Japanese diet and cured a lifelong short slightness. It was caused by pressure inside my head due to malnutrition. Impossible to reverse all damage milk did to me. Love your articles. Only small correction: Tomatoes are actually fruits. That is a detail most people get wrong.

  • Milk quality (i.e., organic, grass-fed, (un)pasteurised, breed of cow used, etc.) really matters. There is a lot of anecdotal evidence on raw milk consumption and much better digestion/assimilation than pasteurised milk. I agree on the topic of IGF-1 though. Anything consumed in large amounts can be detrimental, so perhaps drinking 3-4 glasses of poor-quality milk is not the best idea. I gave up milk 5 years ago, but now re-evaluating the ideas I learned in college (nutrition studies) and what I absorbed from the anti-milk movement. I think complete milk/dairy products avoidance is a very New Age thinking and is not supported by the science.

  • As a regular guy I have to watch a ton of conflicting articles and then make a decision based on what seems right and is best for me. There appear to be many studies both in favor and against dairy, however, the metastudies remain neutral to positive about the health benifits. As a result, I will continue to eat dairy. I do agree that politicians are not reliable sources of dietary health.

  • Three years ago I was poisoned at my garbage collection job. I lost my job because I couldn’t judge distances and I assisted the retirement of a truck, let’s say. Fortwo years I was basically “out of it.” What was left of my reasoning faculty was trying all sorts of different foods and also fasting. Some improvement was registered but not much. Then, I bought a box of eighteen eggs and a one and a half litres of unhomogenised milk. I drank about half the bottle, then cracked the eggs on the top and emptied them in. I felt good immediately that day. I felt better the day after that. That was all I had for about six months. A bottle of milk and a dozen and a half eggs. The feeling of healthiness was amazing. I started to feel strong again. Then I started eating beef again and felt like lifting weights again. I was able to lift 150kgs before the gyms closed for CON-vid. Dairy and animal foods have helped me so much in the last year or so. Eggs, milk, beef, butter. That’s the best diet for me.

  • Excellent advice from the doctor ! I enjoyed the lecture very much. One thing the doctor forgot to mention was the adverse reaction humans have to bovine estrogens. Bovine estrogens function to promote the growth of a 60 lb. calf to a 1,000 + pound adult. Bovine estrogens are the major cause of adolescent acne, especially in boys who tend to live on milk and cereal. Estrogens promote fat gain, if not obesity, in both boys and girls. And it’s not just lactose intolerance! It’s casein intolerance, not to mention some of the other milk globulin and albumin proteins (their ratios). Finally, why on earth would a human adult drink breast milk, especially from another species???

  • I had a combination of tendonitis in the heel as well as diabetic neuropathy. It was from a combination of things but mostly that my veins in my right leg were deteriotating from inflammatory foods. Mostly, the culprit was dairy. I stopped eating it and it really helped the healing process. I get so upset when I see the USDA or FDA’s encouragement to consume dairy. I have always thought (wheat and) dairy are for cattle. Maaaaaybe if you consume unpasteurized raw milk, that is organic or dairy once in a while like we did centuries ago….it may be different.

  • More people need to understand the downside of milk but most people are ignorant and won’t comprehend that It won’t be able to take in this information but I’m really glad you put up this information because I have felt very sick over the years when I consume milk products 2 days in a row or more (That means any milk product.)

  • the problem with health and nutrition articles is that everyone has their own agenda regarding what is healthy and not. Then you have people simply trying to justify their own diets. It actually becomes frustrating and confusing when you are actually seeking nutrition advice and want to learn about certain topics. I guess everyone has to do what “works” for them..

  • Being northern European in extraction, I do fine with milk, as I have inherited the lactose tolerance mutation. It is irrelevant that 75% of the world cannot tolerate it. Moreover, being alkali, it helps my acid reflux. I cannot tolerate the spicy foods that people in the tropics. I suspect that the ideal foods for a person depend to a great degree on their biological heritage, something for which more research needs to be done..

  • I am lactose tolerant and have no problem digesting milk. I have tried giving up milk for a year, but saw no difference. After going back to drinking milk, again no difference. I would appreciate a more specific, nuanced discussion about the health effect of milk consumption for those who are lactose tolerant. Thank you.

  • When I was a child my dad told me never to eat veal, my dad told me that baby calves a fenced-in a very small so they can hardly move and they are fed Dairy which makes them anemic. My dad told me this was a cruel death and that’s a baby calves could hardly stand up because they were so anemic and they do this to make the meat tender feed them Dairy. I noticed for myself this is sometimes milk makes me feel anemic so I really just cut it out of my diet all Dairy. The biggest turn-off to Dairy now is when I heard that they’re allowed to have a certain amount of pus and blood in the milk. I thought that they would sell anything no matter how pasteurized it is in the milk. I’m 69 years old now and praise God I haven’t broken any bones and I get around very well. When I was growing up there were five children in my home and we never drink milk. There’s calcium in our vegetables and other Foods and probably just what we need

  • Going to completely stop dairy. Dairy always makes me feel bloated, increases blood pressure after eating, decreases my stamina and gives me chest pains. Dairy is also the only food source that when eaten gets pushed back up when eaten I don’t vomit but it goes back up the throat it feels like and when I make a puke reflex it all goes out right away. I’ve always had that but only recently I’ve decided to listen to my body. Whenever something doesn’t feel good I wont eat it anymore even if claimed healthy I believe that whenever your body has trouble digesting something don’t eat it. Even if you feel fine, look at your bowels. And personally I also believe that you should eat a died that fits your DNA like if you are fully European eat food that you can only find naturally in Europe. I am Dutch but with Scandinavian Norwegian heritage and found that almost all tropical fruits digest poorly in me despite Blood work not showing any signs of allergies. Tropical fruits give me lethargy and weird numb feeling brain fog

  • All current textbooks on nutrition, like my September, 2012, “Present Knowledge in Nutrition,” by Erdman et al, inform us that dairy products are perfectly safe & highly effective at providing nutrients for us, especially calcium. No realistic plant source can provide the RDA of calcium for growing kids, which are my chief concern.

  • I am a weight lifter and I love milk because it raises Igf1 which in turn, helps me grow muscle. I’m 68, so, maintaining muscle mass of prime importance. The milk I select is from Kalona Dairy in Iowa. It is from organic, grass fed, full fat, dairy and it’s high in omega 3 fats. You do know that saturated fat is healthy and not bad as you indicate in this article. If you want to stay away from dairy, that’s your business, but why do you have to push your erroneous values on everyone else. The body builders of the past used milk and dairy products to help them grow fabulous physiques. Muscle is the organ of a happy long life, as long as one sticks to natural means and stay away from the drugs.

  • I was overdosed on antibiotics and became autoimmune. For over forty years I was on high blood pressure medication. I for some reason stopped using dairy products and my high blood pressure disappeared. All of those years and money wasted because of a milk allergy. Why do doctors only treat conditions and never seek to discover the reasons behind them?

  • I’m lactose intolerant and generally avoided milk. However, I started eating Greek yogurt daily about a year ago cause I heard processed dairy products were ok! For some reason, I kept having nerve inflammation throughout my body which gradually got worse! After cutting off yogurt for a few months now, I feel fine now!

  • 1:25 ‘Government Food Pyramid is Udderly Ridiculous, not based on facts’ – Dr. Walter Willett, M.D., Ph.D., from the Harvard School of Public Health – the second-most cited scientist in the entire field of clinical medicine. 3:15 Cut down carbs – especially sugars – and limit wheat products and manufactured foods.4:33 limit modified foods. Pyramid protects food industry and lobbyists

  • Thanks for the articles, books and great advice, Dr. Hyman. In this article you use the words milk and dairy somewhat interchangeably, so I wasn’t sure if you had in mind all dairy or are we mostly talking about drinking milk? Quality organic butter or ghee, yogurts, curds and kefir, and of course eggs, all with numerous vital nutritional benefits, seem like good food choices to me. Any chance you could clarify this. Currently reading Eat Fat, Get Thin. Many thanks.

  • I just recently found out the truth about dairy and meat and other animal products. At first I was really angry that we had all been taught that these animal products were good for us to consume. When it’s NOT. And now all I feel is sadness and a hunger to try and change things. I’m just a 17 year old girl so I don’t even know what I could do to inform millions of people and educate them on what they are consuming and why more than half of them are developing heart diseases and becoming obese. Schools, parents, and other important role figures seriously need to let people know that what they are consuming is slowly freaking killing them!

  • I… am a Milk-Aholic. I am ADDICTED to Milk! If I ever tried to stop, I’d need Re-Hab! That stuff is DELICIOUS!!!!! But if I ever do try to stop, what would I replace it with? I basically only drink Milk and Water. As a kid, I also drank Pepsi/Coke, but quit that as an Adult. So what would replace Milk? I can’t drink just Water. That would be BORING!!! Nothing is perfect, so what is so wrong with Milk? Anything that would replace that would also have something wrong with it.

  • At last! Someone on my side. Grew up in a family where my dad and brother were copious milk drinkers, a quart or more each daily. I drank it for a while but wound up stepping away before I turned 10. We lived in NW South Dakota and each spring the first green thing up in the pastures was wild onions. And, yep, no amount of processing would get that early spring onion taste out of the milk. I stopped drinking it, much to my mother’s chagrin whilst the other two just powered through it. Since then I’ve never missed it. I eat other dairy: cheese, butter, etc. but no milk. Ever unless I cook with it. Never had any bone problems, digestive issues, or any other chronic illness other than moderate psoriasis. Don’t know if it’s relevant but my 1st colonoscopy, after having deferred successfully for a decade, @ 60 came back “squeaky clean” Doctors words. Nothing to even consider to biopsy. I’d think that isn’t all that common. I’ve always said that milk is for babies. Truth! Think about it. NO mammal on the face of the planet drinks milk into adulthood by choice other than humans. And that’s because somebody said it’s “good for you”. Cats don’t count. They are only opportunists in dairy barns or drink it because we put it in front of them.

  • This is a sponsored article to be honest, I was diagnosed with lactose intolerance in 2018, I have avoided dairy religiously since then until I came across a article on this app, raw milk is pure gold. I was skeptical at first, but after doing some research I found a journal that investigated the potential benefits of raw milk on lactose intolerant people, I read it and then gave raw milk a try, that was the best decision I’ve ever made in my life. When you pasteurized/homogenized milk in order to increase its shelf life you will end up denaturing most of its vital components including the good bacteria in it (probiotics). If you can’t take it raw don’t take it.

  • False. People is Africa actually drink a lot of milk. It’s one of the cheapest thing you can find since majority of the people are farmers who also own cows- I grew up in africa. we didn’t have any animals, but our neighbor used to sell fresh milk to us.. (it wasn’t pastorized, so we used to just boil it first, then turn it into yogurt and cottage cheese. we also add the milk to coffee. The cows are really treated well, fed really well, in order to get the most milk out of them. The process of milking the cow isn’t painful either. Everybody had lots of energy, and were never sick because of consuming dairy (unless you drink it without boiling it). After I came out here, the system is messed up, it may have chemicals or hidden sugar in them. and I feel sluggish after I consume dairy. But in my opinion, that won’t be the case if the dairy is taken freshly from a happy cow, with no chemical or sugar or whatever the hell they add to it. That might also be the reason dairy is related to cancer, because in Africa, cancer is the least of our problems. Very few percentage compared to here in N.America. And the percentage would’ve been a lot higher if it’s the dairy.

  • OMG! I drink a gallon of milk every 3 days…Ive always thought I was doing something good.. I would look at the lable showing all the Vitamins and Minerals and think of all the nutrition im putting in my body. Ive just watched a series of articles after reading a small article on this subject regarding the hormones in milk. Im am definitely bringing my milk consumption down to maybe a glas a day and then no milk at all. Im all freaked out over this…

  • I have colitis and had to cut dairy and grains and all processed foods. I didn’t do it completely and started eating some again. I was just in the hospital with a horrible flare up. And now can’t eat any solid food without it nearly killing me. So I will be on a liquid diet for the near future. I have learned my lesson very painfully.

  • “Saturated Fat Causes Heart Disease”. This is a myth. Saturated fat raises HDL, which is benign and doesn’t increase the risk of heart disease. This has been intensively studied in the past few decades and the studies consistently show that saturated fat is not in any way related to the risk of heart disease. Studies 1. Siri-Tarino PW, et al. Meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies evaluating the association of saturated fat with cardiovascular disease. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2010. 2. Mente A, et al. A systematic review of the evidence supporting a causal link between dietary factors and coronary heart disease. Archives of Internal Medicine, 2009. 3. Dreon DM, et al. Change in dietary saturated fat intake is correlated with change in mass of large low-density-lipoprotein particles in men. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 1998.

  • Well I am an adult and I do not think my mother would appreciate me crawling in her lap wanting to nurse. Humans are the only ones on earth that drink milk as adults AND humans are the only ones that drink another species milk, since we do goat, cow, sheep milks and cheeses why not camel, cat, elephant. MMMMMM kitty brie cheese

  • I learned MODERATION helps with budget, weight and mood. I usually don’t drink milk, but I like a portion controlled amount of cheese, cottage cheese, occasional scoop of ice cream or rarely a glass of milk – life is good & I’m happy not feeling deprived! Portion Control is key, but that goes for almost everything we ingest. Good Luck 🤞

  • Readers should note that this article is highly biased and hardly helpful for anyone looking for the truth about dairy products. All current textbooks, for instance, tell us that dairy is perfectly safe and highly effective for us, especially in regard to calcium. Only 4 servings provide the RDA thereof for kids, while no realistic plant source can do so in less than 9.2 servings (bok choy), and what kid is going to eat 9.2 servings of bok choy each day every day for years? Kale? 13 servings. Broccoli: 18.

  • So, bone health depends on a number of items, but primarily calcium and collagen are required for structure, but must utilize Silica along with vitamins D and K. Everything therefore can be acquired from vegetables, but would still supplement the full list of essential amino acids and some enzymes, to ensure there is no deficiency impeding this network. Dairy intolerance is due to how milk is processed and how much of the enzymatic activity is destroyed. Dairy is a good food if you can digest it. Once again, enzymes are required to make milk an important addition to your diet. Food intolerances are almost always linked to an inability to digest those foods. So, either a person lacks the means to produce the required enzymes or the food they eat is devoid of enzymes. Take beans as a good example of this; bean intolerance is about 99.999% 😁 right? Beans are a good nutrition source, but they give many people flatulence, because of the long time it takes to cook them. I’ve found that soaking them several days greatly reduces the cooking time. Before eating, take some enzymes and no gas or intolerance. The product sold to relieve gas attacks from eating beans is nothing more than an enzyme product. Finally, anyone suffering from bad health should immediately start taking a full spectrum enzyme supplement, drink more water and employ intermittent fasting, eating only once a day, until you are fully recovered, then eat only twice a day and never close to bed time.

  • Basically, “everything bad for you. Don’t eat anything. You’re screwed up.” Me: Mmmm… steak, veggies, cider, eggs, bacon, coffee, cream… For me, I’m happy and healthy right up until I hear about how everything is bad for you. So, the best thing I can do it ignore the BS and get on with my life. Paleo works for me. Maybe somebody else would have a different experience. Oh well. Time to get on with your life.

  • My wife grew up in Guatemala. When she wanted milk she would go to her neighbor’s house with a glass and for 15 cents her neighbor would fill the glass with rich, ceamy, and foamy milk direct from the teet of his cows. The industrial dairy product we buy and drink in the USA is nothing like the product she drank. How can we think that all changes to a product are insignificant and don’t affect biological nutrition.

  • He comes up with the argument that milk wasn’t consumed up until 10000 years ago, yet he says whole grains fruits/vegetables are healthy, thoose foods also weren’t consumed up to 10000 years ago, specially whole grains, and all the fruits/veg are hybrids made a lot bigger/sweater so his argument there is crap, also hes wrong on saturated fat, also most of the negative stuff he says, is only if you get processed dairy.

  • Since youtube cut off my reply to a critic, I must share that I receive NO compensation for checking this or any other site and commenting. My motivation comes from seeing mothers of growing kids (who need lots of calcium) confused by anti-dairy propaganda like this, full of lies, mis-statements and snarky innuendo, so I would show them trustworthy sources of info on nutrition, such as the textbook I was using to teach nutrition in college, and that would satisfy them, but youtube keep allowing these lying crock of hooey articles to mislead and fool people, so I feel motivated to try to prevent less educated mothers from being fooled.

  • Dairy products, better rates of calcium to phoshate then meat, lot of vitamins/minerals, fat soluble vitamins A/D/E/K, vitamin K2 that helps prevent heart dissease, by allowing calcium to go where it belongs from the blood vessels, make sure to get quality though, grassfed from local farmers, oh I forgot CLA wich is anti cancer and helps with weight loss.

  • I began drinking 1/2 gallon of raw milk a day. Since then, my skin has cleared, I sleep like a rock, my mood is better, my energy has soared, I’ve had no allergy symptoms, I’m losing weight and best of all my brain has cleared. Before this, I was having 1-4 temporal lobe seizures per month; Now I am having none of this. The calcium, vitamins, minerals, and amino acids are essential for me.

  • 2:36 Obviously, it’s still possible to lose weight on any diet – just eat fewer calories than you burn, right? The problem with this simplistic advice is that it ignores the elephant in the room: hunger. Most people don’t like to “just eat less,” as it may result in having to go hungry forever. Sooner or later, many will likely give up and eat without restriction, hence the prevalence of “yo-yo dieting.” While it should be possible to lose weight on any diet, some appear to make it easier and some to make it much harder. The main advantage of the low-carb diet is that it may cause you to want to eat less. Even without counting calories, overweight people tend to eat fewer calories on low carbs. Thus, calories count, but you don’t need to count them.

  • Anchorbaby, now you’re going for the red meat? Ever been to Italy? They eat pork in every meal! Ever seen a Tuscan steak? It’s like the cross section of an ox! It takes four people to eat it. The French guzzle down tons of dairy And red meat. They live as long as anybody, and are the 128th fattest country on earth (i.e. skinny, mostly. Ever walked down a Paris street?) The longest lived countries all have strong food cultures, cuisines that have been worked out for centuries, passed down from mother to daughter. Jokers like this guy tell them to reject the food of their families, sending them into the open arms of the Health Food Industry. I walked down the Health Food isle in Safeway yesterday. Everything had health labels all over it. The common ingredient? “Condensed Cane Juice.” Sugar. But they can’t admit what they are selling. Drug dealers are better people.

  • Bottom line: ignore this crock-of-hooey article, as well as the other anti-dairy propaganda vidoes, and check with someone who has an education, such as a Dietitian (that’s how it’s spelled) or a teacher of nutrition in college, like myself. We have & can show you trustwothy info sources to learn about calcium bioavailability, beneficial factors for absorption and problematic factors, such as phytochemicals found in spinach & some other vegetables which inhibit calcium absorption.

  • I’ve told people that for more than the 13 years this article is old – milk is truly meant for calves, not humans. Finding out cancer thrives on sugar, I cut that out myself, too. Happy to hear these things from a professional/doctor who was taught by the same system the ones telling us to put too many harmful things in our bodies were.

  • I haven’t still watch the article yet but i have to say that i started to have so many problems with diarrhea or mixture of diarrhea and normal stool. I began going to the toilet 3 or 4 times a day so i began consuming milk with reduce lactose and it did not see the improvement in my health. One day i was reading an article from UK about health and it was there when i realized that Casein ( the protein in milk ) was the other cause of the problem as well). Casein has been calculated for calf not for people and on that sense vegetarian people are so correct . I am not a vegetarian but i realized how correct they were. I cut milk all together and never again i have diarrhea. We can get calcium from cabbage, broccoli tin mackerel, tin sardine because of the bones . Cows do have strong bones and they get the calcium from plants. Nature does have weeds that are rich in calcium, etc. and they don´t contain chemicals.

  • Im always bloated and constipated for years now but I never have abdominal pain. I decided to eliminate dairy to see if it could be a possible factor to my bloating. I don’t see any changes to be honest. I’ve been dairy free for a month now. Should I go for two months to really see if there are any changes?

  • Sorry but many cultures have been drinking milk for thousands of years. It’s literally the reason they survived. Cows, sheep, goats, mares, camels, buffalo, yaks, even reindeer have all been utilised. Raw milk is incredible and adding it to my diet is the best thing I ever did. I’ve been drinking it for 12 years and I even have my own cows to milk now. My family will never go hungry.

  • Funny I ran across this article…I just threw away 1/2 of half gallon of WHOLE milk….with me thinking I needed milk for my bones I switched from Almond milk to WHOLE milk….bad mistake….I’ve since gained “TEN” pounds…definitely cutting out dairy from my meal plans….thx for this article definitely needed it

  • Thank you for this wonderful information. I am learning so much from you. I am currently reading your books “Blood Sugar Solution” and “Young Forever”. The information you provide is extremely helpful. It must take a lot of courage to take on the Big Food, Big Pharma, and Big Farming industries. Thanks for doing this.

  • My new Functional Medicine doctor. 😉 My last Functional Medicine doctor kept taking new patients until it reached the point I couldn’t get another appointment for seven months even when in crisis. I was told if you’re really sick go to an emergency room or emergency clinic. Go to the people who helped me get all these immune disorders that are getting worse? I researched and found a decent Internal Medicine doctor I see tomorrow. Meanwhile, I am following this guy and Jason Fung. I just am going to miss Gouda and goat cheese. 🥺
