Does Stomach Acid Get Neutralized By Enzymes?

4.5 rating based on 87 ratings

Carbonic acid, a digestive enzyme, equilibrates with carbon dioxide and water through catalysis by carbonic anhydrase enzymes bound to the gut epithelial lining, resulting in a net release of carbon dioxide gas. The stomach’s lining is protected from acid by cells producing mucus and bicarbonate, acting as a defense mechanism. The hydrochloric acid breaks down food, allowing digestive enzymes to break down proteins and kill bacteria. Gastric acid is neutralized by bicarbonate in the duodenum, blocking gastric enzymes that are optimal in the acid range of pH. While stomach acid does not directly digest proteins, it activates an enzyme called pepsin. Not all food enzymes are destroyed by stomach acid, depending on the enzyme and its acid lability. Over-the-counter digestive enzymes are not helpful for heartburn. As stomach contents pass from the stomach to the small intestine, their acidity is rapidly neutralized by the addition of HCO3- produced by ductal cells. Over-the-counter antacids can provide temporary relief by neutralizing stomach acid, while digestive enzyme supplements can aid in heartburn prevention. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a type of bacteria that survives in the stomach by secreting an enzyme that neutralizes stomach acid.

What are the symptoms of acid reflux and GERD?. Symptoms of acid reflux and GERD may include:

  • Backwash. You might notice acid, food or liquids backwashing from your stomach into your throat after eating. This is also called regurgitation. You might notice the sour taste of the acid.
  • A burning feeling. Acid literally burns the tissues in your esophagus. If it feels like it’s in your chest, it’s called heartburn. If it feels closer to your stomach, you might call it acid indigestion.
  • Noncardiac chest pain. Some people feel pain in their esophagus that doesn’t feel like burning. Esophagus pain triggers the same nerves as heart-related pain does, so it might feel like that.
  • Nausea. Acid overflow or backwash may make you feel queasy or make you lose your appetite. Although you may have eaten a while ago, it may feel like there’s still more food to digest.
  • Sore throat. If acid rises into your throat, it can make it sore. It might feel like there’s a lump in your throat, or like it’s hard to swallow. Reflux into your throat often happens at night.
  • Asthma symptoms. GERD can trigger asthma-like symptoms, like chronic coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath. If acid particles get into your airways, it can make them contract.
  • At night or while lying down.
  • After a large or fatty meal.
  • After bending over.
  • After smoking or drinking alcohol.

Lemon water. Lemon juice is generally considered very acidic, but a small amount of lemon juice mixed with warm water and honey has an alkalizing effect that neutralizes stomach acid. Also, honey has natural antioxidants, which protect the health of cells.

How a Doctor Can Help. If you have heartburn two or more times a week and changes to your diet or eating pattern haven’t helped, consult a doctor. A gastroenterologist (a doctor who specializes in the digestive system) can perform tests to measure the acidity in your stomach and see if frequent acid reflux has damaged your esophagus.

GERD is often treatable through a combination of lifestyle changes and medication. But persistent symptoms of reflux need thorough evaluation by a gastroenterologist who can find the underlying cause and discuss available treatment options.

  • OTC products with H2 blockers, like Pepcid AC, usually last for four to 10 hours and work best for occasional symptoms.
  • Take H2 blockers and PPIs half an hour before meals and don’t take them for more than two weeks unless directed otherwise by your doctor.

Acid reflux is a common stomach issue in the U. S., affecting more than 20% of adults. Without treatment or lifestyle changes, it tends to worsen over time. If left unchecked, acid reflux can develop into gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), the chronic form of acid reflux. GERD can persist indefinitely without treatment, and it increases your risk of esophageal cancer.

Acid reflux happens when too much stomach acid builds up in the body, which can force the valve-like sphincter that separates the stomach from the esophagus to open when it shouldn’t. In individuals with acid reflux, this excess stomach acid creates pressure, which forces the sphincter to stay open, allowing food and acid to travel back up the esophagus from the stomach. Over time, the sphincter could permanently weaken, losing its ability to counteract even mild to moderate pressure, resulting in GERD.

Stomach acid, also referred to as gastric acid, is essential for the digestive process. When the stomach cannot produce enough acid, key minerals and proteins can’t be absorbed into this body. Low stomach acid is medically referred to as hypochlorhydria.

If the body doesn’t receive necessary nutrients, you can become vitamin or mineral deficient. Stomach acid is also responsible for killing harmful bacteria from foods and neutralizing enzymes. Low gastric acid can leave the body vulnerable to a number of diseases and health complications.

What do enzymes do on an empty stomach?

Digestive enzymes are literally designed to break down food, That’s their only job, and each one caters to a different type of molecule. So, taking your enzyme supplements on an empty stomach means they won’t have anything to kick them into action, unfortunately.

No food means the enzymes have nothing to do. And that’s just boring.

Be supplement smart! The best time to take your enzymes is right before, or right as you start eating. When in doubt, check the label. Usually anywhere from 30 minutes to right before you eat is ideal.

And if you really want to maximize the efficiency of your supplements, take specific ones with their intended food. For example, take lactase when you’re eating or drinking dairy products, or amylase when eating carbohydrates (hello, pasta party.)

As a person ages, their stomach also produces less pepsin. Pepsin is an enzyme that breaks down proteins and aids digestion.

People with low levels of stomach acid may benefit from taking HCL supplements. Digestive enzyme supplements that also contain pepsin may be especially beneficial for older adults.

However, a person should speak with a doctor before taking any supplements. Although supplements may alleviate symptoms, the hypochlorhydria may be due to an underlying health condition that requires medical attention.

What do enzymes do to your stomach?

What do enzymes do?. One of the most important roles of enzymes is to aid in digestion. Digestion is the process of turning the food we eat into energy. For example, there are enzymes in our saliva, pancreas, intestines and stomach. They break down fats, proteins and carbohydrates. Enzymes use these nutrients for growth and cell repair.

  • Breathing.
  • Building muscle.
  • Nerve function.
  • Ridding our bodies of toxins.

What are the different types of enzymes?. There are thousands of individual enzymes in the body. Each type of enzyme only has one job. For example, the enzyme sucrase breaks down a sugar called sucrose. Lactase breaks down lactose, a kind of sugar found in milk products.

Some of the glands produce a thick, protective layer of mucus that prevents the acid from attacking the wall of the stomach. This mucus also contains a lot of bicarbonate, which is alkaline (the opposite of acidic) and neutralizes the acid before it reaches the wall of the stomach.

  • Antacids that neutralize stomach acid. Antacids containing calcium carbonate, such as Mylanta, Rolaids and Tums, may provide quick relief. But antacids alone won’t heal an inflamed esophagus damaged by stomach acid. Overuse of some antacids can cause side effects, such as diarrhea or sometimes kidney complications.
  • Medicines to reduce acid production. These medicines — known as histamine (H-2) blockers — include cimetidine (Tagamet HB), famotidine (Pepcid AC) and nizatidine (Axid). H-2 blockers don’t act as quickly as antacids, but they provide longer relief and may decrease acid production from the stomach for up to 12 hours. Stronger versions are available by prescription.
  • Medicines that block acid production and heal the esophagus. These medicines — known as proton pump inhibitors — are stronger acid blockers than H-2 blockers and allow time for damaged esophageal tissue to heal. Nonprescription proton pump inhibitors include lansoprazole (Prevacid), omeprazole (Prilosec OTC) and esomeprazole (Nexium).

If you start taking a nonprescription medicine for GERD, be sure to inform your care provider.

  • Talk to a Doctor … really? I have talked to many doctors for the past 15 years. I have done everything mentioned in the article and more (except HCL). Every Doctor told me not to take HCL. Stating I make too much Acid already which is the reason for the inhibitors to lower my stomach acid due to Acid Reflux. Concerning my issues you name it … I got it. Trying not to get cancer. Over the years things just kept on getting worse to the point that I just wanted to die. I finally just went ahead and took the HCL according to how much protein in the meal. Very little protein I just take 1 pill 650mg … high protein meals require more pills … etc. So you need to pay attention to your body. Anyway … I told my doctor today that I have been taking HCL for about 30 days and I feel like a different person. She freaked out! She even said she not sure if she wants to keep me as a patient if I continue to take them. I told her I’m not sure that I want to keep her as my doctor since you have no idea how HCL w pepsin has helped me. And wonder why she did not know about this? If it was up to me I’d fire every doctor that has treated me for these last 15 years! I think they should be strung up! Their practice of getting kickbacks on the drugs they prescribe is UNETHICAL and that leads to very poor care at that! My conclusion is you have to be a better doctor than the one treating you!

  • You’re so precise. Thank you so much. I’ve been using Apple Cider Vinegar for years, but probably using too much water. Amazing how individuals with Gerd/Acid reflux disease are being told the opposite by most doctors. Wow, the issue is low acid. Thank God for you and others that truly want to help us heal 🙂

  • I was skeptical at first because everyone on YouTube is an expert but what you say makes logical sense so I figured I have nothing to lose. I’ve suffered from acid reflux for more than 15 years and two years ago it got so bad it would double me over. I would start coughing then aspirate acid into my lungs which could cause me to start vomiting. This would happen daily. My doctor put me on Prilosec. It helped but then I started putting on weight. 30 lbs in 6 months. I ran out of Prilosec 5 days ago. Instead of buying more at $20 a box I got bottle of Apple Cider Vinegar for $6. Three days in and I can not believe the improvement! I’ve had only mild heartburn when I sleep which goes away with a sip of water. If this continues to improve you have completely changed my life! Thank you!!!

  • This was excellent!!! The only thing you missed here was to include Virgin Coconut Oil into your daily routine to put the SIBO back in check as you rebuild your stomach’s HCL production levels. The Manuka honey actually causes my SIBO to get worse and I use the 400+ from New Zealand. I can’t even take probiotics without a bad downward spiral. But The ACV, HCL, Enzymes and Eating smaller meals all worked to bring my health back to a manageable place where I could reclaim my life. Thanks for this incredible article. You’re a smart guy who knows where he’s looking for the solution to a problem many get misdirected with and sucked into the expensive and never ending loop of the chronic illness this causes. Thanks again.

  • God bless you! dr axe I suffered for 3 years and 4 months from estomac acid reflux exteme pain unbelievable pain I tried antacids nexium, carafes, gaviscon, dexlansprazole, nothing worked, then I had acids reflux surgery linx and haital hernia surgery I still had burning the troat and esophagus and tongue and ears and burning eyes and extreme dry mouth and eyes, so I saw your article I tried your advice my estomac acid reflux is reduced greatly I use digestive enzymes, God bless you! Salam alikum! peace be upon you!

  • 🆘 I did baking soda test and I didn’t burp. I mean not at all after 5 min nor rest of the morning before my first meal. That telling me I have low stomack acid. I have bad breath, bloating and gas. I have constant pain ( I don’t feel burn) and heaviness in my chest and nothing helps. Well… when I eat it helps a little. I used HCL ( maybe dose was too high), apple cider vinegar, digestive enzymes and what not and no help. As soon I get up I feel pain and it last till I go to bed. What’s going on? I eat healthy. I become vegetarian, no sugar, no coffee, no gluten… why my esophagus hurts?! Endoscopy showed plaque in esophaguses (no candida or cancer) I was prescribed anti acid ( with no relieve or help) without testing if I have low or high stomach acid. Dr said I have gerd, silent heartburn, but I don’t have/feel heartburn and other gerd symptoms, more like indigestion. Is it possible I have environmental and/or food allergies (Eosinophilic esophagitis EoE) I don’t know about? 🆘

  • Dr Axe…the number one thing to fix low HCL is fixing and stimulating your Vagus Nerve. The Vagus nerve controls HCL and digestive juices. HCL supplements are just band aids. Gastroparesis (no HCL or digestive enzymes) is caused by an underactive Vagus Nerve. Dr. Datis Kharrazian has a fantastic article and book on this

  • I’ve GERD since 11 years my age is 34, I tried multiple medications like homeopathy, Natural Ayurvedic medicine, Ayurveda Medicine, consulted a 3 to 6 specialist in Gastro, and did all type of scans Endoscopy, blood test, ultrasound scan, all the reports came normal, nothing worked all are temporary, still am facing same problem. I’m a healthy fitness my routine is to have only healthy meals vegetables, fruits, leaves, crushed ginger warm water every morning, I don’t smoke, no alcohol, regular home work out, no coffee teas, carbohydrates drink, I get excess of burping while i sleep these days, I still raise my Pellow and sleep, morning after i awake i get burping excessively, I didn’t take any tablets so far, I maintained natural remedies only, Now am planning to go far GERD Surgery – Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication what do you suggest Doctor ?

  • Thank you for taking the time to do this very helpful and informative article. I have extreme bloating, gas and GI discomfort most of the time, including when I go to sleep and when I wake up in the morning. The only time I don’t feel gas is when I manage to fast for more than 20 hours. This is beyond frustrating, especially since I’ve tried everything I can think of such as giving up dairy, gluten, legumes, nuts, fruit, raw vegetables, soy, sugar and processed foods during the past 4 years. Could the problem simply be that I don’t have enough stomach acid and HCL pepsin like this article describes? If I eat raw ginger root half-an-hour before each meal and put apple cider vinegar on my food during the meals, should this solve my extreme gas, bloating and GI discomfort? Thank you so much! I tremendously appreciate your counsel.👫

  • I can’t digest veggies and end up with sour stomach the next day, doesn’t go away until I get it so bad I start to throw up and I don’t stop throwing up until the little piece of lettuce that I couldn’t digest comes up then I start to recover. I usually get diarrhea as well. Like my body is just trying to flush everything out of my gut. the HCL does help a lot of the time but I find I need it with lettuce and then beans which are a protein like you mentioned. I clearly have leaky gut issues. working on figuring out how to heal it. I have everything else under the sun relating to leaky gut, thyroid issues I’m sure, adrenal fatigue, post partum anxiety, digestion issues, joint pain… you name it. Time to HEAL it!

  • Thank you for all of your help. Lemon water seems to cause a lot of digestive distress and intestinal pain (not stomach pain). Do you know why this may happen? Thanks so much! HCL doesn’t cause this issue, however, when I take it with a small meal it may also cause intestinal pain. Is this possible? What is the reason? I would love to know why too much acid may cause pain in the intestines around the belly!

  • Don’t forget both supporting the gall bladder by unsticking the bile using fresh ginger and garlic tea after meals. The hcl apple cidar vinegar combo is excellent. I add l-glutamine, digestive enzymes, magnesium with calcium, lemon and honey to some grape juice with apple cidar in the morning and at night, I drink some ginger garlic lemon and honey tea.

  • My husband thinks he was misdiagnosed with acid reflux and may be suffering from low stomach acid for 12 years now. Doctors have had him on Omeprazole this whole time, he having lots of stomach issues as we speak, barely can eat, lots of burping right after eating something, lately he’s even been falling asleep after eating and then sweating alot…

  • Thanks for the amazing tips! Some uestions: can I take the manuka honey with a little bit of water or will that dilute its benefits? also, can i combine all of these tips at once or is that too much on the body? in other words, can i do apple cider/digestive bitters/HCL with pepsin, enzymes, etc in a 24 hour period? Any help would be appreciated!!!

  • Been on protonix for 15 years. Every time i try to get off it, major reflux. Tried the baking soda test. Inconclusive. A littje burping. Tried betaine hcl w pepcid with a meal. Slight increase in burping and discomfort within hr after eating. Can’t tell if need more or less. So i can’t tell if i have high or low acid. Ugh.

  • Bravo Dr Axe…you the man! Clearly taught. I testify in a court of skeptics this stuff works. Was a long road for me to figure out because I was so brainwashed in the government medical system that is very narrow and near-deaf minded, that it took me a while to figure out the FIRST doctor we should always see is a nutritionist who isn’t bought and paid for by greedy western medicine profiteers! Then a general jack of all trades natural doctor as a balance…then to whatever else if a specialist is even needed. We have too many “specialists” and not enough wise general practitioners! Also I noticed that drinking malt liquors and wheat/micro brew beers (and I so crave them, lol), just occasional social smoking, and eating processed whole and enriched wheat products were also noticable irritants for the reflux and stomach acid when it was at worst. I had to cut those out until my gut was entirely healed and then could partake every couple of months and be okay with no problem. Don’t take the stomach acid suppression pills and antacids until your test your stomach acid because my lack of acid was the root problem for 16 years. A 4-week diet change, some minor fasting, and cheap supplements and a little added stretching and exercise made it be gone and I feel 50x better. You don’t need the supplements (enzymes, betaine hcl, vitamins/minerals) but they did help my recovery because let’s face it… it’s hard to eat healthy in our fast and greedy culture. If you can eat out of the organic isle for a month and eat mostly raw stuff, drink clean nutritional liquids, and eat natural probiotics you’d likely have the same effect.

  • what about people that didn’t know any better & had the gull bladder removed to find out I ‘m sicker now & need medications to keep me out of pain every day. I’m worse because the doctors fixed it. Just like they took out my appendix when I had a C-sections but nothing was wrong with it. It’s just too crazy, but I didn’t know I shouldn’t trust any doctor our insurance is willing to help pay for. You talk about a normal body, but what about a body that the doctors cut out body parts & either sold to make money or put into the garbage can. How can we now find our way back to healthy?

  • I do have hypochlorhydria AEB Heidelberg test. Stopped PPI after 20 yrs. ‘cold turkey’! How will I be able to tell when my stomach has started to make HCL again?? I use ACV, Betaine HCL with Pepsin & gentian root, licorice powder, in ginger, & peppermint teas. Thank god that info was here for me on the net and NOW my new PCP is totally educated in alt. tmts. HE gave me the Betaine HCL & advised the licorice powder. * I also have erosive esophagitis w/ Hiatal hernia.. So WILL my stomach start to reproduce its own HCL and how can I tell? ??? I also had a gastric sleeve in 2012, but was on PPI Waaaay to long. OMG

  • but how do we know if acid reflux is caused by low stomach acid or high stomach acid? My father has this condition with bloating and flatulence for many years and then it slowly progressed to chronic urticaria and now into other skin issues. Could this be due to low stomach acid or high stomach acid? No doctors seem to care to consider these issues as linked and are only adding to the confusion. any suggestion would be of great help. Thanks in advance.

  • Thank you Dr Axe for this article is my first time to watch kind of article this stomach acid is affecting my life, I take medication but nothing change still have that and platy of gas on my mouth I’m so sick of this needs help. Please Dr can you advice what tape of food is causes stomach acid? Because all food that I eat cause me problems same time don’t eat and constipation all times I need help. Thanks Dr

  • What about if you have a bloated and gassy stomach, always burping and passing gas. You didn’t even eat anything. But you feel full all the time and gurgling stomach constantly, should I take apple cider vinegar? I’m going to take some when I get home. I’m at work perusal this article. But most nights I can’t sleep at all with this constant gassy feeling, makes me hiccup or choke when I’m about to fall asleep and pass out that it wakes me up. It’s so crazy. I can’t wait to take apple cider vinegar

  • Do you know something about ionized water and low stomach acid? I have drinked ionized water about 8 years (between 8,5-9,5 ph) and know I have found out, that i have low stomach acid (have used the baking soda test, and i blech after 9 minutes). Know I am taking applecider vinegear in a shot of cucumber/lemon/ginger a half hour before eating. Plus I take 2 teaspoon applecider vinegear in my shot. My diet is right now the ketogen diet with additional 30-40 g pure fat to each meal. I am overweight and have a lot of stress i my life. Because of my stomach acid (my slim expert told me) I have abdominal cramps/nausea/blech after eating the high fat meal. She also told me, that the ionized water is counteracts the effect of applecider shot? But the ionizer expert have told me, that the stomach neutralizes the basic water in the stomach. I am confused and I am listening to many of your articles, I hope that you can help me

  • I’m my experience getting tested to see why your getting reflux is the start. Not just to fix the symptoms! In my case h pylori was the culprit, still trying to eradicate this. Started natural protocols Oct 2018 after one round of triply therapy didn’t kill it. I did a G.I. map stool test, it’s there plus 4 other opportunistic bacteria. Bad bacteria too high and good bacteria too low. I don’t get acid reflux since the antibiotics but my gut just didn’t feel right. About to started hcl this week – wish me luck!

  • I take about 4 to 8 HCL pills and about 2 to 6 digestive enzymes with every meal every day. It does control my heartburn, but how do I get my body to produce the correct amount of HCl and digestive enzymes and not have to rely on so many pills every day? If I don’t take these pills, I have horrible heartburn.

  • @Dr. Josh Axe Please help me I had H Pylori a year ago My gastrologist did endoscopy and blood test and put me on antibiotics for 2 months after that H Pylori was negative in stool test but i still had symptoms and my doctor told me i have gerd and ill have to take PPI for whole life I did not take any PPI and i got fine after some days. everything was fine till now I dont know what happened on Saturday after break fast started feeling shortness of breath in the afternoon i was not able to breath and my heart rate was 140 it was like a death in the evening i felt bit better so i eat dates and walnuts and i started feeling discomfort burping and shortness of breath. then after i was not able to eat felt like vomit all the time. from sunday i am eating too little to keep going Went to the doctor today but he gave me PPI and antibiotic RAZO D CAP (PPI) ZOSERT 50 MG TAB ( for depression anxiety ) SIBOFIX 400 MG TAB (for infection) ONDEM 4MG TAB (for pain) LEON 500 MG (for lunch infection ) I told him about HCL and ACV he said never ever try it. i was in so much pain that i had to start this medicines After taking this medicines i woke up at 5 AM and through up 5 times Now i dont know what to do 🙁 I am thinking to finish this medicines get better again on my own then trying ACV or HCL Please advice what you recommend

  • What if i am allergic to Apple Cider Vinegar? I get soar troath, so not tempted to try that again. However i can eat red apples in small amounts without significant problems. Yellow tends to give me reactions. Orange dries my skin within 30 mins or more. I know i have a big acid problem. Citrus/Pineapple/Lime also gives me the same issues as apple cider… To sum it up, i need to be very careful with acid fruits first and foremost. What are my options?

  • So i have erosive gastritis and before gastroscopy I have consumed food that helps heal gastritis or some natural remedies. So my question is: Can be H. Pylori missed on gastroscopy – biopsy test, becouse I have used 24 hours before test, something that might kill H. Pylori or heal gastritis in natural way?

  • Dr. Axe how about my symptoms 3 days from now I have a burning stomach but not all the time and I my stomach is always gurguling making noise If I drink water and if I go to bed sometime I have heartburn after meal at gurguling stomach sometime I feel weak I feel like I don’t have energy even I’m eating healthy foods fish fruit veggies pork meat but I feel weak or not enough energy sometimes I feel numbenss on my hands If get hungry I feel weak..what is this? is this high acid stomach or low acid stomach?thanks 🙂

  • Why do I only take HCL if I eat a lot of protein? I’m operating under the assumption that I have low acid. I have constant reflux symptoms. However, I rarely eat much protein. I’m just not a fan of most high protein foods, and I don’t eat meat. So if I have low stomach acid and I don’t eat high protein, but HCL is only for protein, then what does it matter if I have low stomach acid?

  • Hi, i have some low acid’s symptoms and as recommended I took an organic apple vinegar spoon before meal, both at lunch as at dinner. however I after the meal I started with burning’s symptoms, which is something I had not before. my symptoms were: reflux without burning and fullness even with small amounts, and slow digestion. plus reflux i also have a mild gastritis. May this is why I am with this burning after the vinegar? or I do you should i think i have the opposite, excess acid?

  • Hi I was on very high doses of antibiotics and omeprazole last Christmas for pneumonia and had really bad stomach issues which have been getting worse, bloating, pains under centre of ribs, pains under left side of ribs cramping, feel like I have a brick in my upper stomach, runny stools, constipated the list goes on. I did a bicarbonate and water test and no burp, all my symptoms add up to low stomach acid. I had some stool work done and it suggests I have bowel inflammation possibly Crohn’s or Colitis. I am scared to take HCL in case I have stomach ulcers what do you suggest to get my gut health back

  • I have low stomach acid. I’m having some issues with taking HCL with pepsin though. I’m having a hard time determining how many capsules I should be taking because I have not experienced the warming/burning sensation yet immediately after taking. Instead, this happens. I will take 2 or 3 capsules with a high protein meal and I do notice an improvement in digestion. However, 2-3 hours later I get acid reflux. Why is this happening?

  • Please help.I have got Rosacea and tons of ance due to my low stomch acid.So.I have tried apple cinder vinegar for 1 month and i also have tried lemon, ginger, sea slat mixture for another 1 month and i saw no improvements at all .So,is it normal to take that much time to recover? i mean i tried everything and my acne and rosacea still the same. Why is that ? :'(

  • Dont understand how acv does anything if ur stomach ph is supposed to be 1.5 and acv raw is like 3.5 but then they say to dilute in water which ofcourse makes it more alkaline. I currently use hcl, about 5 capsules with protein meal. Not sure if that’s the correct amount as the guidance online is wishy washy. They say wait for a burn and then back down but others have said a healthy stomach wont feel a burn so do not exceed 3 to 5.

  • Been using an alkaline pitcher to raise the ph because my reverse osmosis is very acidic with 5.0 ph and I raise it to a ph of 9 with the alkaline pitcher for drinking. I thought drinking water that was very acidic was bad for you. But what if someone doesnt have enough stomach acid and they drink a high ph water all the time? Is that counter productive?

  • Also you mention Manuka honey…the tests that have been done to determine if this can help with IBS and SIBO have all been done on rats. 1 teaspoon a day on rats! Which would equate to a like for like dosage based on our weight versus a rats weight …..0.5lbs for a big rat, and say 190lbs for a human to 380 teaspoons of manuka honey a day!!! Which would probably cause us to die, or have a sugar induced heart attack or spend the next 3 months shitting ourselves with only a daily amount.

  • Since HCl is so necessary for our stomach to break down food, we should avoid any prescriptions that neutralize stomach acid. But still, some people gets comfort while having those medications and some people tell that sometimes, it is unbearable to live without medications such as antacid. It seems counterintuitive! Please explain this contradiction. And any antacid alternatives(natural) ?

  • While I agree with your advise, yet ; your title is somewhat mis-leading. You’re giving the advise of taking these pills, but your title says, ” Naturally ” pills are not natural. The Apple Cider Vinegar, yuk. I do take Apple Cider Vineger mixed in the chicken / beef broth, But Apple Cider by itself, YUK. I can go for Manuka Honey.

  • Hi Dr. Berg, this is how I have benefited from your website. In Dec 2020 I was diagnosed with diabetes 2 after being pre-diabetic for probably 2 decades. Around April, I watched one of your articles that promoted intermittent fasting. So I jumped on board. I began squeezing 3 meals / day into 10ish hours, but that was not satisfactory. After about 6 weeks of this, I dropped to 2 meals a day, plus I fast every Saturday. I alternate my first meal between fruits and veggies. My 2nd meal is eggs, avacado and protein. I love that you love eggs. About 6 weeks ago I was no longer diabetic (not even pre-diabetic!) and have dropped my blood sugar testing to once per month. The best 2 things I learnt from you was 1) insulin resistance and 2) intermittent fasting. (I have not spent time on keto yet). Doctors had an opportunity for 2 decades to offer me advice on preventing full blown diabetes. “Cut down on your sugar” is just not sufficient medical advice. Thank you for your website and your effort into passing along useful information. You have been more valuable to me than 20 years of doctors. And for every person that you have helped, and who leaves a comment, I am sure that there are hundreds and hundreds of other people that you have also helped but who have not left a comment. Thanks.

  • I’m an old guy who has suffered with acid reflux to a point that I had major surgery and multiple other operations. I have taken all of these anti acids and pills that stop the acid buildup. With all of those pills and operations, my condition got worse and I suffered all kinds of problems. I found that a small amount of whiskey kills the infections in the esophagus and stomach and eating peppers eliminates the acid reflux. I now use no drugs and I suffer no stomach acid problems. I eat peppers every day and when I go several days without them, I end up with acid reflux. Everything that the doctors told me was absolutely wrong. The drugs cause tremendous other problems and just don’t work. It’s all in the diet. Don’t listen to most doctors because they were taught how to administer drugs.

  • Oh Lord! I feel like going for a vacation because my 1year if confusion has been solved in 6:30 secs. I feel like I can lecture a whole community after listening to this. My many questions and doubts have been resolved. Praise the Lord.🙏Our people will die for lack of knowledge. I will continue to tap into your cup of knowledge Dr berg. Thank you!

  • This is a tricky one. I think balance is important. I beat cancer with tumeric, aloe, black seed oil, CBD oil etc, ACV,baking soda too and lots of green tea. I ate a balance of foods : cucumber avocado brown rice dark chocolate fish Turkey chicken and alcohol beverages on occasion. I just had a good balance of different foods. I think it varies for each person.

  • Hey Doc, I was diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2017. Your articles helped me clean up my diet, lose weight, and control inflammation. I do intermittent fasting and I don’t eat refined carbs. I kept 40 pounds off for the last four years. your articles make everything so simple to understand. thank you for doing what you do, you have made a huge difference in my life.

  • You have to Distill or buy Distilled water and add back Trace Minerals and Salt. Water is so polluted and I found that out after I installed filters in my water line. I was shocked to see the first Pre-Filter turning brown within a few gallons. I bought two Distiller off of Ebay a year ago and now Distill all my drinking water. The results are Fabulous, as the first thing I noticed was how my skin look so healthy, soft and all the little bumps I had on my skin were disappearing. Just amazing how we take for granted water; yet, the water everywhere is so polluted. Think about all the Meds people take and then excrete into our water supply and that is just the tip of the iceberg of all the chemicals we flush down the drain and people drink. Love 4Truth!

  • Omg!!!!! This article is a god send! I have been struggling with ph and have taken tests for my stomach which said I had problems breaking down protein and had very low b12!!! I used to drink 9.5ph water years ago and swear I had stomach problems after but everyone swears alkaline is better! So glad I saw this because even drinking alcohol throws off my ph, but now it makes sense because the root is in the stomach!!!!! Thank you so much for sharing! Will switch from Himalayan salt to Celtic sea salt & ACV to see if I see an improvement!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

  • Ya’ll, this one is really interesting, especially that he has posted this today. After three years of not eating meat, today I am planning on going keto. A few months ago I started integrating eggs and seafood. For the past two months, I have been on a fruit diet (melons, citrus, grapes, berries, avocados). I have dropped all the congestion in my stomach very quickly. I believe the fruit diet healed my body. Though I feel strong, I know it is not sustainable due to low protein/fats. I recently started integrating bone marrow occasionally and I found that it was able to release some things the fruit diet could not (or it was just quicker to release it than fruit) I’ve been playing around with my ph, and experimenting. I noticed many benefits from having an acidic stomach. And I also did some research and found that candida thrives in an alkaline environment 😳. Let’s see how this goes.

  • I definitely benefited your contents. First was air hunger that governmental hospitals couldn’t solved through blood tests and scanning machines many years however, you solved my problem after I found you on Tiktok saying if you are air hunger, you need B1. After you said that I was last stages that I developed peri peri condition. Extremely low heart beat, confusion, forgetfulness, hair loss and more. I had to call my GP about the situation and told my problem they immediately told me to come and do blood test but found nothing. I bought B1 100mg when I swallowed after minutes, I felt my lungs were expanded. Second problem was my gastric that I had been suffering for almost ten years. The air hunger and the gastric suffering started same time. The gastric almost killed me. My stomach swells when I eat food. My diaphragm swells and tightens when burp a lot. However, after I watched a article talking about low stomach acid and said If you have low stomach acid take ACV, Betaine HCL and Tudca. After I took them, the swelling of my diaphragm immediately disappeared, stomach pain, stomach swelling and constipation. My problem was low stomach acid. But my question is why my blood test didn’t show vitamin deficiency? May be if stomach acid is low blood test results hides. Thanks Dr Eric Berg for helping us.

  • I was over 150kg and I wanted to loose weight in a natural way. Thanks to what I’ve learnt on your chanel..I created a personal programme in which I don’t have to do lots of sports, nor stop myself from eating..and I’m the sweat type. One year later, lost more than 60 kg, doing sports less than two hours a week or none, eating whatever I want, I most admit, doing things more seriously, would lead to best results, but still: I’m loosing the weight, so thanks.

  • I am following dr.berg from 3 years now… all his articles have helped me, my family and the extended family. I am so much greatful to you dr.berg, I was an obese child and it is due to wrong eating habits….now I am 36, After marriage I regained a lot of weight after my 2 children. Since I am perusal your articles and have followed what is thought I have reduced from 83kilos to 68 now, I am healthy… ok with my weight…… thank you 😊

  • I take 2 table spoons of sider vinegar in glass of water before lunch and dinner I´m in Keto diet a lost in one year 22kgs I was 105kgs my height 1m83cms, by the way I´m cancer free from a Leukemia acute Lymphoblastic L3 and I´m thankful for the doctors, nurses and all of the staff at hematology and science, thank you for sharing you´re knowledge Dr.

  • Sodium bicarbonate can be beneficial to kidney function and health, but should never be taken with food or for “acid indigestion” for exactly the reason Dr. Berg states. If sodium bicarbonate is taken, it should with plain, unsweetened water, with an empty stomach and upper intestine a few hours before eating a meal, so it’s not alkalizing the stomach when stomach acidity is most needed. The excess sodium will get excreted with metabolic acids you don’t need, alkalizing harmful acids and making them less harsh on the kidneys, while the chloride (useful acid) needed for digestion will be conserved by the kidneys for subsequent use by the stomach.

  • DR BERG! I’m from Philippines and I really love your articles! I have PCOS and acid reflux, now I don’t have pimples and fat tummy caused by PCOS ‘coz I always remind myself to eat cruciferous vegetables with proper exercise. With Acid reflux, I’m taking sea salt and sometime apple cider. Go under the sunlight every morning and they all helped me!! Thank you so much!

  • I had GERD for about 10 years, causing esophagus inflammation, hiatal hernia of the esophagus (difficulty swallowing), joint inflammation, weight gain, fatigue, food allergies and chronic sinus inflammation (probably stomach acid vapors going up my esophagus). Came across A Dr. Berg article on trying apple cider vinegar with my food, started healing my problems the first night, also our well water is very alkaline and had to be distilled. Took about 5 years to recover.

  • You are a good doctor and I saw your articles. But sometimes, you misguide people. What you are talking about here, it’s totally different from body chemistry. For your info, normal pH of stomach is about 4, not 1.5. 1.5 is the pH of HCL which is secreted during meal. Stomach is not the reservoir for HCL. Baking Soda in Stomach will react with HCL and this reaction will create carbonic acid which will further create CO2 and H2O. CO2 is essential for our body.

  • I 100% agree. In my personal experience, I always kept my body in a mostly acidic state and for the last 20 years I RARELY have gotten sick, my metabolism has always consistently stayed high, no crazy weight gain or fluctuations, digestion has been consistently sound and many more positives just to name a few. On a side note you mentioned sea salt. For the last few years I would have problems with muscle spasms no matter how much water I drank. Well, I did some research and decided to simply add a little sea salt to my everyday drinking water…NO MORE CRAMPS! As an athlete and avid cyclist logging in more than 200 miles a week in the hot sun, this simple addition has been paramount! This is also along with doing ACV doses 2 to 3 times a day. Great article!!!👍👍👍 I’m 38 going on 39 and I am in as great shape as I was in highschool!

  • I’m a care aide. I go into seniors houses & take care of them for an hour with their daily activities. One of my clients died unexpectedly. She was a normal, healthy 86 yr old woman & one day she got sick & started to decline rapidly. They took her to the hospital but they couldn’t find anything wrong with her. Before she passed away I asked her “what do you think is wrong with you” she told me she didn’t know. She also told me her stomach wasn’t feeling good. I wonder if she was too alkaline? Every single morning she took two tablespoons of liquid calcium. I’ve always wondered what was the cause of her illness.

  • Grateful as always for this valuable information, Dr Berg. I took this on board a few months ago as I was having severe difficulty absorbing minerals… they were literally going through me. I’ve started taking lactic or malic acid with my drinks and suppliments and feel so much better. Thank you x PS. You may wish to (re) inform folks that alkalosis can be caused by a damaged gut… at least that’s my experience. If you lack lactobacillus, how is the body supposed to regulate it’s pH?

  • Dr. Berg thank you for your superb articles. I have been drinking antioxidant Alkaline water for several years. As I have been aging I noticed a little acid reflux. So I am not drinking as strong alkaline now and have been adding ACV a few more times a week. My skin, hair and joint health improved so much with drinking Alkaline water. I will stay in tune with my body and continue to make adjustments. Thanks again.

  • Thanks Eric! My brother had the 8-hr surgery for pancreatitis, would you believe 7 years ago?! X-rays and scans reveal his organs now are all over the place, in other words, when they were taken out during surgery they weren’t put back in place. Today he is really suffering heartburn and acid reflux. He has not been able to lie down in years. I just found this out during his recent visit. I am going to forward this article to him because, in my opinion, you cured me from the point where I didn’t know how I would ever eat or drink again. One doctor gave me prescription for antibiotics for sore throat and that nearly killed me! The next doctor took me off the antibiotics and gave me acid inhibitors. That sounded harsh to me when we learned in elementary school that stomach acid should be like battery acid. So why are we inhibiting acid production!!! Hmm did not sound right to me! Fortunately a friend told me about you at that time! This article makes so much sense! I am going to share with my brother.

  • This is exactly what I told a “chiro doctor” I went to before: I tried alkalizing my body by alkaline diet but it didn’t work, what worked was acidifying my stomach then it did “alkalize” the body because it’s now able to get the nutrients. I guess, from the looks of how he reacted, he was surprised by a simple logic. (He practices giving baking soda to his clients which I tried too).

  • Dr. Berg, This is good information, yet I believe the biggest piece of this puzzle rarely gets discussed. The missing piece here is the workings of the pancreas. When your stomach is presented with acid, be it from your natural stomach acids or an external source, the pancreas is given a signal to produce sodium bicarbonate. It’s this introduction of a high PH element that neutralizes stomach acid in the duodenum. I believe this mechanism is solely responsible for alkalizing the body. If you consider your past advice of lemon juice having the ability to alkalize the body, you were introducing an acid which signaled the body to create more sodium bicarbonate. This, in turn, alkalizes the body. I truly believe the epidemic of low stomach acid in America is what is mainly causing the rampant systemic acidification of Americans due to it’s affects on the production of sodium bicarbonate. Thanks for your time, Charlie

  • Here’s an interesting thing! I have been using an alkaline jug filter for my drinking water for some years. I have suffered with IBS for a long time. A friend told me his girlfriend had been diagnosed with IBS by her doctor but when she went to her homeland it stopped. She changed her water. He told his mum who also had IBS symptoms and she also changed her water. I changed to drinking well water unfiltered. We all feel better now. I thought perhaps it was all the pesticides etc in the tap water, but having watched this article I think perhaps my problems may have come, at least partly, from the alkaline water. It was recommended to me by a bioresonance practitioner who said that alkalising the body will protect from disease! Confusing!!

  • Great info! I do drink a glass of ACV with water daily. I love it! I also overeat daily and feel yucky when I first wake up. I’m thinking maybe I should also drink some ACV before bed. I am also trying to stop overeating to see if that is what makes me feel nauseous every morning. What’s that saying,….”you are what you eat and the company you keep!” Changing what you eat can literally change your life!

  • It seems there’s some confusion between alkalizing the body vs alkalizing the stomach. But you can’t actually change the PH of the body, as we self regulate at around 7.2 (i believe), because we’d die otherwise. We do that by drawing minerals from our stores (e.g., muscle and bone). If you want to put downward/acidic pressure on your body, eat a ton of sugar. And if you want to put upward/alkalizing pressure on your body, eat a mineral rich diet (e.g., dark leafies full of potassium), and things like lemons which are acidic to your stomach, but alkalizing to the body.

  • Dear Dr. Eric, you really deserve to be addressed as Dear Doctor, you have hit the nail on the head. I too was of the same opinion regarding altering the pH of the stomach and it’s repercussions. Look at the craze behind the alkaline diet, many noted nutritionists proclaiming about alkaline diet. Having an alkaline diet is akin to taking antacids, what would be your recommendation, Is alkaline diet good or bad? Please post reply. Thank you with lot of regards.

  • I always love all of your articles and thank you, I would love to have an answer no doctor has been able to give: When I eat fruit like strawberries, orange, peach etc, or extremely sweets, same, but apples, blueberries, etc, & other regular sweets ok, my body will have immediately yeast infection? I miss my fruits. Any answer?

  • Well, listening to this, makes sense. But it confuses me from what I knew so far. In 2008 when I was recovering from a cancer surgery, I met a doctor who introduced me to the principles of alkalizing the body, of Dr. Young. I tried his products (Supergreens with some alkalizing drops) and literally a miracle happened: the inflammation around the surgery location withdrew, the pain and extreme bloating disappeared – within hours!!! My energy level increased so quickly that 1.5 days later I went for a light hike in the hills with no problems, whereas before, I had to lay down for the rest of the day if I went out for one hour of slow walk. So what’s the explanation for that, what would you say, Dr. Berg?

  • Growing up as a kid, I had a lot of stomach issues for many years. Ended up been told that my stomach makes too much acid. Funny thing is, I also had 99% of these “low stomach acid” symptoms but mine was high stomach acid. So I don’t know what to make of this 🤷🏾‍♀️ I’ve been feeling much better reducing the acidity level 🤷🏾‍♀️

  • I`m confused. I understand that our stomachs need to be acidic BUT was also under the impression that our bodies in general are healthier when they`re at a neutral or higher PH level which helps to keep virus` away. I thought taking ACV would help to maintain a normal to higher PH level and that was healthiest for us. I`ve been taking ACV morning and evening for years and only 2 small colds slipped into me. HELP! I thought acidic human bodies tended to get more sick?!

  • TY. I have been working on re-acidifying my stomach after years of drinking Alkaline water ( yes I bought the system) in order to avoid cancer. Not having enough acid to digest the whole foods I was eating caused nutritional deficiencies. I have low Iron and Vitamins B family and D, even though I was supplementing. On non healthy Keto diet even with walking and resistant training I was losing too much muscle. Eventually I suffered with a Gallbladder, Liver, GI backup. That is when I found Dr. Bergs Gallbladder formula (extra strength) and Nutritional Yeast along with a Tudca supplement. Digestion and Elimination is getting better as I eat for health, immunity and nutritional balance now. At 65, I will have to work harder to keep existing muscle and re gain more by ensuring my system is able to digest/utilize the good protein I am eating. I still crave it at times and my iron is still low. Point: It takes a while to undo the damage done by getting the body too alkaline. Beware.

  • I just popped up how to acidify the body and yours was the only one, all others are how to alkalize. So thank you for sharing the TRUTH! My problem is candida it has taken over and caused immense damage, so I am going to try your suggestion and use electrolytes and apple cider vinegar, also fermented foods, THE BATTLE BEGINS.

  • It definitely worked for me! 8 months ago, the medical doctor said I was losing weight (muscle) and was anaemic. Taking Iron did not work and because of your sound advices, I started on apple cider vinegar and lemon juice 6 months ago. I digest protein now, no more upset stomach. I create enough enzymes, so I am no longer anemic! Energy is way back up, my mind is no longer foggy (brain signals to the body seems to be coated in protein – like an addressed envelope to your letters – and these will be impeded by a lack of protein. Your letters won’t get there unless they are carried in an addressed envelope, right?). It’s day and night for me. There is so much specialization of sciences nowadays that medical doctors don’t know nutrition (one told me he studied nutrition only 4 hours in 4 years of medical school). A large gratitude to you Dr Berg! Keep up the great work. *I take 1 tea spoon of lemon juice and one of apple cider vinegar before meals (I fast at breakfast) and one more before bed time. I don’t remember last time I had trouble digesting! Keto diet really helps but I do cheat sometimes (I had sushi yesterday). If I may suggest, eat enough fat (my favorite is cream cheese 30% fat) otherwise you may start craving carbs and sugars. Cheers!

  • I dearly love coffee. Every time I try to drink it my whole body hurts and I get a migraine headache that puts me down in bed for the entire day. It is not the caffeine. I can drink and eat all the chocolate I want and it doesn’t affect me. I believe it is the acid in the coffee. I really love coffee but I just can’t drink it.

  • I have been having a hard time swallowing food, my saliva, and liquid the past few months. I couldn’t swallow anything at one time on last month, and I almost died. I have never had this issue in this magnitude before. They will run one more test on me on next month God say the same. I pray they find out what is causing this issue, and that I’m healed in Jesus name. I want to eat healthy even when I start eating normal again. But it have been real challenging not being able to really eat a meal like you should. All I keep trying to remind people as much as possible is never take anything or anyone for granted. God bless us in many ways each and everyday. You truly and honestly don’t know what you got until it’s gone.

  • My PH is sitting at 7,4 But I Have Apple cider vinegar every morning and intermittent fast till noon. I have messloads of greens in my smoothies and salads and avoid starches and sugars. I would have thought that would be ideal. I was told that the more acid the body the more likely one would be to get cancer etc. So I am a bit confused.

  • Sir, we are alkaline by nature i.e. alkaline blood – meaning we need alkaline foods, our functioning is acidic(excretion, digestion etc). Alkaline blood means we need to eat fruits and vegetables as much as we- it is our natural diet. Our intestines are sooooo large, not ideal for protein digestion, meat is not our diet. The ketosis you mention is a body’s backup plan, why would someone live their life on a backup plan? I have never heard about anyone healing from eating meat(consuming no medicine/chemicals with it), whereas there are countless number of cases where people cured their problems just with fruits/vegetables/juices etc. Aren’t those alkaline in nature? Our body doesn’t resemble a meat eater species/acidic foods.

  • Usually very useful content however this segment is subpar. Furthermore, your segments often conflict with each other. For example, Omega 3’s are great, you recommend fish, flaxseed, chia and etc. No warnings mentioned. In another article, about testosterone, you do say that flaxseed has a lot of estrogen which will kill the testosterone. Consider tying the topics together. Analogy would be … you’d say, 2+2=4, 5-1=4, 12+12=24 which is all true however all people different and cookie cutter approach often does not work for many, especially the older we get.

  • I think this title is a bit misleading for a complex subject. My body was way too acidic from exposure to chemicals, causing acid reflux, gall bladder inflamation, etc. I was led to a book called “Alkalize Or Die” written by a medical doctor. I was able to get out of emergency mode through diet. I then found a naturopathic doc who helped me detox, and yes, there were times I had to take the things you mentioned. However, being either too acid or too alkaline is not good. Neutral is where we need to be! That book teaches how to do this with combining alkaline and acid foods.

  • Watch you pretty steady now. I’ve been testing my PH for 7 days twice a day 1 hr after my two meals I have each day. I stay from 6 to 6. 5 each time. I don’t need to loose weight but been on antacids for years because I was told I had an over acid system which I get heartburn, Gerd a lot, and was also told I had a thin lining of my stomach from over acidity. Since I’ve been perusal my diet against processed carbs, sugar and flour products and I feel so much better. I was Diagnosed with being prediabetic, systemic, lupus, and fibromyalgia and low thyroid. I’m on medication for thyroid, but the others try to watch how I eat. But apparently not very good because can’t get rid of the heartburn. I use a little apple cider vinegar w/ purified water and lemon twice a day. Never did the vinegar before, first time. What do you think Dr. ? PS. I’ve never smoked nor drank alcohol.

  • Hi, Im 51 and have been drinking daily your apple cider vinegar drink. Ice hockey just started and Im also doing weekly motocross and Ive noticed especially on ice hockey that I dont feel fatigue snd lactic acid on my legs, so I would say this stuff really works! Ive also cut on carbs and eating more daily eggs and loc on alcohol. Im also taking coconut cold pressed oil, olive oil in the morning and veggies fermented in lactid acid. Thanks again!

  • Good day Dr. I have gone through a lot of gut issues over the laat 2 years. I am off of gluten and use very little sugar and lactose free milk or goat’s milk. Intestines always inflamed. My GP prescribed omeprazole for 3 months. Got UTI one month ago, antibiotics prescribed, and was admitted to hospital with covit. Suffered constipation but stomach cannot take any more tablets (covit vitamins) Developed a mouth thrust a week ago and now Shingles . Trying so hard to help my body recover.

  • I just saw a article Dr Berry did that was fantastic. He really went into great detail on the whole alkaline/acid thing. I guess there’s absolutely no way we can change the pH of the body unless there’s a health concern. Eating veggies and drinking high pH water won’t do a thing for either stomach or blood. It was freaking cool. I have and always thought if you eat alkaline, you’ll become that way😂😂. Doesn’t matter what you do with acidic foods or alkaline, the body will do what it’s going to do🤔🤔. Funny because I talk about this website on his articles😂. You’re both BRILLIANT 👌.

  • OMG Years ago I remember deliberately only eating foods that were alkaline. I’m fuming that we keep being given advice that deliberately will create dis function in our bodies. Now I Understand why I need to acidify my digestive system. I’ve done so much damage over the years that it’s taking ages to fix.

  • I’m having a hard time taking this guy seriously when he says really very acid instead of acidic. But I just put the article on and I will continue listening I’m sure I sound pretty pretentious right now wouldn’t be surprised if somebody lets me know that that is the correct way to say it nothing wrong all these years

  • So tell me about gout, which is caused by a high uric acid content. Without lowering your blood acidity, how do you reduce the uric acid in the bloodstream? My understanding is that acidity can only be reduced with alkalinity. Gout is a massively painful ailment and is often debilitating. High acidity works fine in the stomach for digestion. High acidity is horrific in the bloodstream. Cancer thrives in an acid environment.

  • You dealt with the stomach very clearly – I understand that it should be acidic. Does eating acidic foods help keep the stomach acidic? What about other body systems? E.g. I heard blood should be alkaline. What pH should they be and how do I get them to the proper pH? Or is the stomach the only part we should be thinking about? Thanks!

  • It’s not about alkalizing the stomach, it’s about getting rid of acidic remnants throughout the body which could (and often do) cause a lot of problems, very well known is Osteoporosis! Another one is Cellulitis and other inflammatory effects all around in the body! So it’s not a black or white situation! Btw, usually we are more to the acidic side because of sugar/carbs which end up on the acidic side of our metabolism!

  • Just stumbled on your article. I was wondering if you have any juicing recipes or a daily guide to foods that keep us in a slightly more acidic state? Just a simple way to start this new journey. I seen so many articles promoting an alkaline state but Somehow I knew it wasn’t beneficial, probably from things a learned along the way. I’m trying to figure out a way to help my husband and myself stay as healthy as possible. We just started our 60’s and both of us are experiencing tiredness and frankly I don’t like it is an understatement 🥹

  • Over a decade ago I got an endoscopy because I always felt sick. The doctor said that because the skin on my throat went all red when he put the camera down, I had acid reflux. I told him I did not but he insisted on prescribing PPIs, which suppress stomach acid. As a result I developed…acid reflux. When I stopped taking the PPIs, the acid reflux stopped. The nausea and abdominal pain I was feeling turned out to be food allergies.
