Urea breakdown begins as soon as it’s applied to the soil. If the soil is totally dry, no reaction happens.

But with the enzyme urease, plus any small amount of soil moisture, urea normally hydrolyzes and converts to ammonium and carbon dioxide. This can occur in two to four days and happens more quickly on high pH soils.

Unless it rains, you must incorporate urea during this time to avoid ammonia loss. Losses might be quite low in the spring if the soil temperature is cold.

Caustic Soda Treatment is a cost-effective chemical treatment for faecal sludge from pits and trenches, which is a mixture of solids and liquids containing mostly excreta and water, in combination with sand, grit, metals, trash, and various chemical compounds. It significantly reduces the public and environmental health risks of latrine sludge. Faecal sludge comes from on-site sanitation technologies, i. e., it has not been transported through a sewer. It can be raw or partially digested, a slurry or semisolid, and results from the collection and storage/treatment of excreta or blackwater, with or without greywater. Wastewater sludge (also referred to as sewage sludge) originates from sewer-based wastewater collection and (semi-)centralised treatment processes. The sludge composition will determine the type of treatment required and the end-use possibilities.

The Caustic Soda Treatment process should be undertaken as a batch process and can be used to treat both solid and liquid sludge. After treatment, the pH decreases towards neutral usually within 24 hours. After neutralization, the supernatant can be pumped off and safely infiltrated into a Soak Pit D. 10. Nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) are the main nutrients contained in agricultural fertilisers, which are responsible for eutrophication of water bodies.

A sanitation system involves collecting and storing or treating excreta and wastewater on the plot where they are generated. The pH value of a substance indicates its acidity or alkalinity, with a pH value below 7 indicating acidity and above 7 indicating basic (alkaline).

Waste matter transported through the sewer is an open channel or closed pipe used to convey sewage. Over time, urea breaks down into carbon dioxide and ammonium, which are readily used by organisms in soil and can be used for on-site faecal sludge treatment. Used water from various activities, surface runoff/stormwater, and sewer inflow/infiltration can also contribute to the sanitation system.
