Is It Possible To Treat Goat Diarrhea With Peptobismal?

3.5 rating based on 96 ratings

Pepto Bismol is a medication that can be given to goats for diarrhea due to its presence of bismuth subsalicylate, which is safe for consumption in small amounts. It also has anti-inflammatory and antacid properties. Goats are like potato chips, and it is essential to determine the cause of the diarrhea before using Pepto Bismol.

When a goat sees diarrhea, do not rush for a bottle of Pepto-Bismol, Kaeopectate, or Scour Halt. Instead, first determine what is causing the scouring and treat appropriately. Use a rectal thermometer to take the goat’s body, as this is uncomfortable for the doe. The recommended dosage is 1.5 cc per 100 lbs, with a vet recommend using 0.5 cc per doe.

Treatment protocols for goat diarrhea include fluid and electrolyte through oral or IV route to reduce rapid dehydration, and broad-spectrum antibiotics if necessary. First, control watery poop by giving your goat anti-diarrheal medication such as Kaolin-pectin or Pepto-Bismol. Avoid giving them any dairy products, as this will make it worse.

Pepto Bismol can be administered every 4-6 hours in the following dosages: newborns 2 cc, kids at or near one-month 5 cc, adult goats 10-15 cc.

If your goat kid or lamb starts to scour (have diarrhea), address it immediately. Give 2-3 ml of Pepto (burnt toast or free choice wood ash) to address stomach issues. Corid is a coccidia that can kill goats, so you can give 10 cc’s every 6 hours for at least 24 hours. If you have access to Albon, it is okay to use Pepto Bismol every two hours or so.

One option is to treat with an anti-diarrheal product such as Pepto-Bismol or Kaolin-pectin when a goat develops diarrhea, to see if you can get better medication from the vet.

What is a natural laxative for goats?

Constipation can be relieved with castor oil, mineral oil or Milk of Magnesia. Some producers provide free choice baking soda to their sheep and goats as a preventative for digestive upsets. Mild, non-infectious causes of diarrhea (scours) are often treated with Kaopectate or Pepto-Bismol.

What medicine can I give my goat for diarrhea?

If a goat is exhibiting clinical signs of coccidiosis (diarrhea being the most common sign) there are some treatment options. These include sulfa drugs, such as sulfamethazine, sulfadimethoxine (Albon) and sulfaguanidine, tetracycline and amprolium (Corid R). Not all of these products are labeled for use in goats and require permission from a veterinarian for extra label use. Usually the treatment is given for five days. These drugs are called coccidiostats. Coccidiostats do not kill coccidia. However, they slow it down. With a heavily infected goat, treatment may not be successful, but it will help reduce the number of oocysts that are being excreted into the environment.

Coccidiosis can be prevented by adding coccidiostats, such as decoquinate (Decox) and lasalocid (Bovatec) to the goat’s diet. Goat rations that contain coccidiostats are available to producers who request them. This will aid in preventing an outbreak of coccidiosis. Another approach is to treat kids at three weeks of age with Albon, and treat them again in three weeks. Afterwards, use a feed with a coccidiostat. Caution: If you have horses, do not allow them to eat feed containing coccidiostats, as these products can be deadly to horses.

Coccidiosis is a very serious disease for goat producers. Remember to isolate and treat any animal that has coccidiosis. The best preventive measure a goat producer can take is to use a feed with a coccidiostat added. With careful management and sound preventive measures, the losses associated with this disease can be reduced to minimal levels.

Can you give sheep Pepto-Bismol?

Many of the common causes of diarrhea are self-limiting, and the major goals of treatment are to keep the animal physiologically intact while the diarrhea runs its course. A variety of oral antidiarrheal medications have been used in sheep and goats. They may be helpful, but no trials have ever been reported.

Pepto-Bismol (Bismuth Subsalicylate, Bismusal) is commonly used to treat livestock with diarrhea. Pepto Bismol contains bismuth which coats, soothes, and relieves the irritated lining of the stomach. Kaopectate (Kaolin-Pectin) can be used to treat non-infectious causes of diarrhea. Drugs which decrease gut motility (e. g. Immodium AD) should not be used. Oral yogurt or probiotics are often given to restore a more normal gut flora.

Antibacterial drugs tend to be very overrated in the treatment of diarrhea but they are sometimes indicated. Treatment with antibiotics is usually not useful when animals are infected with viruses or protozoa. However, antibiotics are useful when bacterial infections are the primary infective agent or where the risk of secondary bacterial infections is high. Sulfa-antibiotics or amprolium should be used in the case of coccidia.

***It is important to note that many of the organisms which cause scours in livestock can cause disease in humans.

What can I give my goat for an upset stomach?

Baking Soda – Add a ½ tsp of baking soda daily to the grain or sprinkle on the hay. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) helps ruminants regulate their rumens. Baking soda aids in balancing the pH level in the rumen and helps to keep the digestive processes in tune.

No Group Grain Feeding – Individually feed grain to goats. If goats are fed grain together, those who eat fast may be consuming more than their fair share of grain and may bloat.

Probiotic Paste – Give oral probiotic paste at the first sign of bloating or upset stomach. Minor bloat can be quickly reduced with probiotic paste.

Secure Feed – Keep feed in air tight, secure bins with secure latches away from goats. Goats are very clever at opening lids and tearing into feed bags. Metal trashcans can be an easily solutions.

How to treat a goat with diarrhea with home remedies?

  • Isolate Sick Animals: Separate the sick sheep and goats from the healthy ones to prevent the spread of infection.
  • Provide Shelter and Nutrition: If any animals are lying down, offer shade, fresh food, and clean water to help them recover.
  • Administer Activated Charcoal and Electrolytes: Activated charcoal can be given to absorb toxins, and electrolyte solutions help prevent dehydration and provide energy to sick animals. Commercial products can be used, or you can prepare your own electrolyte solutions hygienically at home.
  • Fly control: Clean the back legs of affected animals to prevent blowfly strike, a common complication with diarrhoea.
  • Seek Professional Guidance: To identify the specific cause of diarrhoea and receive appropriate treatment, contact your Veterinarian for expert advice. Sending fresh droppings from both healthy and sick animals to a laboratory for testing can help determine the underlying cause.

Sheep and goat diarrhoea can arise from various underlying conditions, including Peste des petits ruminants (PPR), colibacillosis, Salmonellosis, Johne’s disease, coccidiosis, worm infestations (like Liver fluke, rumen fluke, tapeworm etc), exposure to poisonous plants and nutritional lamb scours. Proper management, early detection, and timely treatment are crucial for the well-being of your flock. By taking the necessary precautions, maintaining a clean and healthy environment, and consulting with a veterinarian when needed, you can minimize the impact of diarrhoea on your sheep and goats’ herds, ensuring their continued health and productivity.

Why does my goat have watery diarrhea?

Why does my goat have watery diarrhea?

Adult-onset diarrhea is less common than in lambs and kids, but nevertheless is possible. Parasitism can cause diarrhea in adult sheep and goats. Coccidiosis can occur in adults under extreme stress or due to lack of immunity. The ingestion of toxins, of which the list is long, can also cause diarrhea. It is not uncommon for sheep or goats to scour when they are grazing lush or wet pasture.

Johne’s Disease (pronounced “Yo-nees”) Unlike cattle, diarrhea is not a common symptom of sheep and goats infected with Johne’s disease. A USDA-APHIS study showed than less than 20 percent of sheep and goats with Johne’s show diarrhea. Johne’s disease is an incurable, contagious bacterial disease of the intestinal tract. It occurs in a wide variety of animals, but most often in ruminants. Johne’s is most commonly reported in dairy cattle, but probably underrated as a problem in small ruminants.

Diarrhea should not be considered an illness in and of itself but rather a symptom of other more serious health problems in sheep and goats. It can be the symptom of many different illnesses, e. g. bloat, acidosis, enterotoxemia, and polio. Diarrhea is not always the result of an infectious disease. It can be induced by stress, poor management, and nutrition.
