Liver function tests (LFT) are a comprehensive panel of tests that can be ordered if symptoms of liver disease, such as jaundice, are present. Common liver enzymes include alkaline phosphatase (ALP), alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT). The breakdown of hepatocytes results in the release of aminotransferases such as alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST). These enzymes must be in the normal range, with AST = 24 UI/mL and ALT = 20 UI/mL.
