I’ve been drinking this stuff and “perfectly average” is a great way to describe it. I’ve had better coffee but other than that, I can’t find anything to complain about. It’s not super bitter, it’s not too acidic, and it doesn’t have a weird aftertaste. It’s not amazing but again, I can’t find anything to complain about. Had Tim Hortons coffee while in Canada some years ago and I really enjoyed it. They were supposed to be opening coffee shops in the US but that seems to have gone nowhere. But I did find the bagged coffee yesterday at Target for only $7 and grabbed one. Can’t remember if what I had before was similar; it’s been 15 years; but it was still good. First time in a long time I drank all that I made rather than leaving a partial pot to dump. It was good and not bad. I could see this being my daily go-to coffee.
Does anybody remember the Old Tim Hortons coffee from the 1990s and earlier?? There was something in the coffee blend that gave it a very unique flavor, unmistakable and not like any other coffee. BUT, It was sooooo good!!!! Mmmmmm!! I thought it might be Chickory they added in the old original recipe, but I dont know. All the chain coffees scour the earth to make the most inoffensive blend of coffee (except Starbucks who experiments and freelances on that journey for mediocrity). I find McDonalds, and Tim Hortons are very good at the inoffensive coffee arena by far. I do like the McDonald’s one a bit better although as it has the better finish on the backend of the tasting notes but they are about the same on the frontend.

The rating system I have understood since childhood is that anything “average” which is how you describe this coffee is AT LEAST a 3/5 (7 out of 10). 4 out of 5 is reserved for above standard- 5 out of 5 means must buy. 2 out of 5 seems unfair for something you describe as inoffensive and OK because 2 out of 5 means it’s something to skip. 1 out of 5 is where it’s offensive and you think it shouldnt be sold at all cause its a crime to sell it.
Dunkin’ Donuts is better than this stuff. I may be a coffee snob not sure lol it does smell weird . I can’t say soap, it does have a strong brew- like, but I don’t really care for Starbucks. With creamer it’s better. I’d give it a 3/5 I’d rather have Folgers myself. Kristy Kreme is my fav though I like Trader Joes, Kirkland, Green Mountain, City girl, better.
A year ago April coffee from any of these places taste like Buckley’s cough syrup… President’s Choice coffee is the old Tim Hortons… my coffee pod maker kicked…. I also worked at Tims for several years as a teen. I didn’t bake, but I spent most of my shifts hustling on the soup and sandwich counter. Most of my coworkers were like a second family and I loved my regular customers, but pretty much everything else about working there sucked. It’s nothing but a horrible, heartless franchise now and the food is disgusting. The owners were horrible to us and the supervisors told us conflicting rules. My Indian/Nepali friends faced some awful racism from both customers and other team members. It was a hub for all of our town’s crackheads and the police were called to our location like twice a week on average. We were almost always understaffed and I would be rewarded for my hard work with even more responsibilities. I remember trying to make day shift drive-thru times when I first started, it was so fun. But they took that away from us, too. 😢 I’ll never forgive Tim Hortons for the psychological damage they dealt me.
Within 2 kilometers of my home are 2 Tim’s, operated/ owned by Asian Emigrants Dirty Tables, Washrooms, and Floors Products not fit to consume We now go to A & W or McDonalds . I miss Robin’s Donuts. Last one where I lived closed after Covid19. Tim Hortons never had better donuts or coffee. I worked for Tim Hortons about 17 yrs ago. I miss the buns and chicken salad sandwich that are just a couple things different now. It is so different now. Only decor, appearance, and design has stayed the same. I likely cannot get hired nowadays because I am not a wage subsidized immigrant. Anyway, it is so bad I will order something and it usually screwed up somehow. Pumpkin spice shot in my coffee became pumpkin spice muffin instead. Lettuce and tomato put on my breakfast sandwich even when I say no to it. SMILE cookies have shrunk and look like crap. Homeless people are taking over everywhere because nothing IS DONE about them. Downtown mall, public libraries, city public spaces, any doorway of businesses, any building nook and cranny, public bench, business public bathrooms, etc are being taken over by them. Something MUST BE DONE. My job at risk because of them and they are killing business.
The problem is RBI owns Tim Hortons, Burger King, Popeyes and Fire House Subs. All these companies share the profits. Before that Tim Hortons was belonged to Wendy’s breaking off in 2006. Major companies like RBI come in and just think about money and ruin everything that people knew about Tim Hortons. As a 90s kid I no longer recognize what the hell Tim Hortons is anymore. I literally have not been to Tims in like 5 years because of this. They were always messy, rude, get my order wrong. I went with a friend (I didn’t get anything they will never see another penny from me unless they revert to how they were in the 90s) and we went inside and the worker was an immigrant, which isn’t the problem. It’s that she had to correct him 4 fucking times because the price kept coming up wrong because he was ringing up the wrong things. This wasn’t an accent thing. This was a “didn’t speak English” thing. Also their food now is just crappy fast food. I keep seeing ads for a pizza. A FUCKING PIZZA. They don’t even make their donuts in house anymore and whatever coffee they switched to back in like 2014 is absolutely awful.

When I was a teen in the 80’s, I worked at Timmie’s. Before all the automation. And we WORKED. We had to move FAST, we had to know how to COUNT CHANGE, we had to know how to operate cash machines and stir coffee and CLEAN! There was no drive thru’s, yet we all worked our tails off and the wait was minimal and the food was BETTER. That’s the difference between the Timmie'(s that made something of itself.. and the Timmie’s of today. Cannot stand modern Tim’s,. and it’s inspired me to stay home and make my own coffee.Workers move little faster than Sloths, and they’re CONFRONTATIONAL AND ARGUMENTATIVE. Service doesn’t exist, and the wait is ATROCIOUS. Because the workers move like SLOTHS.. their union protects the job they’re no longer willing to do.. the entire experience has suffered a long slow death. But dead it is.
I worked as a Barista at a cafe downtown and we always had crackheads coming in to pass out. First they started with the washrooms so we put up a customers only rule, then they started purchasing drinks so they could get the washroom code to pass out so we had to allow them to use the washroom but check up on them to kick them out after 30 minutes. Then they stopped using the washroom and started passing out on our couches all together. Y’all, I wanna just do my job, not attend to drug overdoses every single shift.
At my Tims it’s still locals running the place but the quality has gone down coming from corporate. The fact there isn’t proper toilet paper but what amounts to napkins to wipe pisses me off. Bland donuts no more filled donuts or timbits where I’m at(except a boston cream). The fact they serve pizza. And at my location the dip doesn’t go far enough down the donut, only the very top.
The quality nosedived here in Montreal too. Ten years ago it was still okay. Thwir wraps are bland af. The best thing on the menu was their crispy chicken sandwhich but I don’t think they have that anymore. If they are going to raise their prices they should at least adapt to the starbuck customer service model. At starbucks we get free refills (on tea or regular coffe or iced) if you have the app/gift card, the employees are veey friendly, and if someone makes the drink wrong or you don’t like it they will remake it or refund it. The place is cleaner, there are more customization. As for donuts, I wish dunkin donuts disnt pull out of Canada because they had the best donuts.
It’s awful now. The whole time you feel rushed, interrupted, and ripped off. It’s over priced and uninspired. They keep changing the menu to new shit that I could go to a different restaurant and get better quality for a better price. Also not to mention the drinks are never full. If you get a large French Vanilla and take a peak inside you’ll notice it’s filled a little more than half way. I think they need to be investigate. I swear the reason international student work there is because they pay the, like 5$ and don’t hire Canadians because they would have to pay proper salaries. The downfall of Tim Horton’s predates 2015 by a long shot. The downfall started in the 90’s when TDL ceased 100% ownership. The expansion into the US, the decision to eliminate baking at each location, the endless attempts to recreate themselves. It used to be that you could walk into a Tim’s at 3 am and get EXACTLY the same service as you would at 3 pm. Now, your lucky if there is any variety for doughnuts, your coffee order will probably be wrong, and everything is overpriced, and processed. You got great coffee, you got FRESH baked goods, not frozen crap that’s re-heated. Now, you get absolute garbage. The brand that Tim Horton invented in 1964 is dead. The multinational conglomerate that runs Tim Horton’s now doesnt give a shit about you. They just want money. Thanks to Trudeau providing taxpayer dollars to companies hiring immigrants, we have people who aren’t fully trained, have a hard time with English and wont complain because they’re worried about losing their job. What happened to cleanliness? It used to be a common site to see someone cleaning all the time. I don’t near Tim Horton’s unless I have no other choice and can’t wait until I get home. i had to call corporate for the timmies in my mall because the people never had a manager on staff. I’m there, going around asking WTF you mean no manager? Why are you working then? And of course, I get a bunch of “is he an idiot? Uh because I’m at work, SIR” lol hf these guys. I had to sit on hold with corporate for like 20 minutes but ffs man the migrants are actually coming in and eroding basic management laws because they consider them useless. If there’s no assistant manager or manager on staff, everyone goes home, end of story. When I went back the week after there was 2 people with the assistant manager tags on, showing the complaints do work. I don’t ask for much which is generally why I actually complain as much as I do but this manager bull, really bothered me. Everyones acting like there’s some job shortage hiring these temporary workers and they’re just destroying workplace regulations that took decades to implement turning Canada into a third world country more and more. Out in Etobicoke/(Old City Of)Yoek you see maybe the odd black or white employee, the majority is Indian/Iraqi/Irani staff and they have like 15 on the counter at least 10 are on window and only 1 on cash lane and only on lane open. And I can’t count how many times I say ‘no cheese’, I see the cashier has applied the ‘no processed slice’ modification but the person assembling somehow still puts the slice on my breky sammich. Now I’m not lactose intolerant like the one nan but I don’t appreciate the person assembling the sandwich can’t be bothered to look up at the acreen and notice the order has no cheese an f up my sandwich. And most locations I go to it’s not even international students, it is Indian and middle eastern people, but not young college/university aged kids, it’s adults i. The late 20’s and through their 30′ who arent’ immigrants or eve 1st geners, who speak with no detectable accent. These are locations with fluent English speaking/reading non-white employees who put cream in my coffee when I ordered and see milk and ordered and see no processed slice on the register monitor. And no it started going to shit when Wendy’s (Restaurant Brands) bought it back in the mid oughts. It’s ben a steady 15 year slide that unfortunately became a violent spiral in ’19.
I remember a couple years ago when I was in Highschool, I was in a tim hortens with a group of friends laughing and having fun. Some staff then sat in a table next to us to give an interview. About a minute in we were scolded for being too loud and that they couldn’t hear the interview. So we then quieted down a bit. A bit later my friend was laughing at a joke again and he was then asked to leave. Not wanting him to be kicked out alone from the group I offered to stand outside with him. A couple days later I was back at that tim hortens with that specific friend and we were just chatting over a drink. A staff then came up to us and said that we weren’t allowed back in because we were kicked out. I tried to mention that I myself wasn’t kicked out, I just offered to step out at that time. But the staff didn’t care, and we were simply kicked put just for having been kicked out before
I think the Americanization of Tim Horton’s has definitely damaged the brand. Let’s go back ten years. Let’s say it’s 2014 again. I’m at Tim Horton’s enjoying a coffee, donut, or whatever. A time traveler appears out of nowhere and tells me that in ten years, Tim Horton’s will offer pizza as a menu item. There are a number of ways I would react to that, but my most basic one would be laughing it off and returning to my refreshment of choice. Before BURGER KING bought Tim Horton’s, if somebody were to ask me what a Tim Horton’s was, I’d probably respond that it was like a little café where you could buy coffee, donuts, and sandwiches and such (does anyone else miss the chili/soup in a bread bowl? I do.). But now if you were to ask me what a Tim Horton’s was, I’d probably say something along the line of a fast food restaurant with a broad range of menu items like coffee, donuts, sandwiches, chili, soup, and…pizza. Yes, pizza. Also, does anybody else remember when they offered burgers as a menu item? Definitely one of the weirdest things I’ve ever seen on a Tim Horton’s menu board. If I were to see a burger on a Tim Horton’s menu board before BURGER KING bought them out, I would probably make a joke out of it. It’s like: “Okay everyone, the world’s ending, say goodbye to your loved ones, say your prayers before bedtime. Tim Horton’s is offering us burgers and fries to go with your freshly brewed coffee!”. 😅 So stupid… But yeah, I feel like the food (aside from coffee and donuts) was also a lot healthier too.
as a kid it used to be so good the bread was nice, inside was cozy feeling and everything was higher quality. i noticed the dip in quality when the bread got changed and my hot chocolates started being super watery, now i can hardly eat anything without getting an upset stomach i even had to sit at my hotel during a trip to Niagara because the sandwich i got made me sick i had intense stomach ache
I remember many years back, for hot drinks, I would always get a cafe mocha. When I started getting them, they tasted like hot chocolate with a hint of coffee, and then at some point in time, they started tasting like coffee with a small hint of chocolate. Since then I have never gotten a cafe mocha from them. Instead, I get a mocha from a local family owned corner store that is cheaper, and tastes better.
Went into tim hortons one morning after getting off a overnight shift like I always do like repeat I swear idk if I was just beyond tired but it literally took them a half hour to make a simple DD and began with garlic and herb cream cheese. Not to mention idk if you all no that tim hortons sold there OG coffee Recipe to McD%%KS so what we have now is not the same and in turn is why Mcds coffee tastes oh so so familiar 🤔 😮
absolutely avoid this place… god forbid you have to actually go inside instead of use a drive thru, just to have 5 employees walking around aimlessly doing random tasks avoiding making eye contact and pretending you’re not even there. I’d rather just pretend to drink a coffee than to actually have to go to a Tim Horton’s and they’re everywhere. Their food menu is always rotating and always seems to just get worse.
Older Canadians have been turned off by Tim Hortons. The quality has dropped severely in the past 10 years, I know a lot of my friends don’t visit their stores anymore due to everything changing there. Newer Canadians don’t know what old Timmy’s is like. They were told that Tim Hortons is a business loved by all Canadians so they have been sucked into the brainwashing that Tim Hortons has been doing over the past 5 years claiming they are a Canadian company. They don’t know how the old Timmy’s was, so they will spend their money at the new Timmy’s and keep that business going. It doesn’t matter that they don’t understand us. It matters that they understand the new Canadians and what they want in their orders. We don’t matter anymore to that company, it’s obvious. I welcome a boycott of Tim Hortons, they are not a Canadian company anymore. They need to stop claiming they are and that they are loved by all Canadians. Remember when they changed their coffee bean and McDonald’s got a hold of their supplier. That’s when it really went down hill. McCafè run anyone?
Tim Hortons restaurants vary wildly for me, but in general I would agree that the service has gone down on average. At least my local one gets my orders correct, and promptly, and the staff are always friendly. I have been to one run by three East Indian ladies where I ordered a London Fog and it was as if I asked them to make a witch’s brew. They eventually made it, but it seemed like they had a real hard time with it. In general, the quality of food and beverages has gone down too.
100% true. I grew up in Hamilton, the hometown of Tim’s, and fell into the ritual of Tim’s in the eighties. Spent countless nights sipping double doubles with friends, dates, coworkers. Chili in a bread bowl was my favourite when it came out – for limited times at first, but eventually it became a regular menu item. Thick, full of meat and beans, it was so good on the road home from a ski trip. Then I noticed it had gotten more watery, thought it was just a bad batch at first but it became consistent as stores ran out of the good stuff. This was such a decline in quality that I had to investigate, which led to finding out that Tim’s had been sold to Restaurant Brands International (owns Burger King) who have a history of sucking every last cent of value out of a brand before dumping it. After 30 years of being a loyal and proud Tim’s goer, that was the day I stopped and have never been back. Tim’s hasn’t been Canadian-owned since 1995, and I’m amazed it’s still as popular as it is.
The most surprising thing to me about all of this was those displays being made of glass. I always thought they were polycarbonate…more resistent to impact. Everything else was on point; after they got sold to BK, they went into the gutter. What a sad downfall of a once beloved Canadian symbol over the years. As for the international students (almost always Indian) being the only ones hired, I’m also not surprised about that either: it’s cheap low-quality labour, from people hiring only their own people, who were never actually “students” in the sense that they’re are better described as economic migrants from diploma mills. They didn’t come here to study; they came here for citizenship, and exploiting the educational system as a shortcut. It’s why they’re working full-time hours instead of working towards the end goal of their diploma/certificate. That explains why so many international Indian students are currently protesting as they face deportation, since their stay has expired. In other words…import the 3rd world, and become the the 3rd world. And also having them become pseudo-homeless shelters for drug-addicts shooting up with needles in the washrooms certainly isn’t helping.
I stopped going mainly because the food and drinks got very inconsistent. Coffee tastes different almost every time and usually is either barely warm, burnt or they forget the sugar. Things like their breakfast biscuits also seem to have bread that is hard and crunchy meaning it sat around for a long time after being toasted. Mcdonalds has been keeping me happy though
One of my first job’s was at a Tim Hortons back in the winter of 2004 (only was hired for the Christmas season). It was a ok job, though my boss was kind of a putz. In current times the Timmy’s I used to go to near my work had to close it’s doors because of multiple reasons like not enough staff, poor service, not enough food inventory and the owner supposedly wanted to get a drive through put in where a veterinarian clinic was going to vacate but never did, so that fell through. So the owner just closed up shop. Also that dude at the end of the article I would have punched his lights out before he even broke that glass case.
Been there less than a week ago. Ice coffee and a breakfast sandwich. Paid a little extra for mayo and didn’t got it… Worked for them twice over a decade ago and saw the muffin cooking behind downgraded to already cooked, frozen and just heat them in the oven. Miss the time the donuts were under a dollar taxes in. Tasted much better.
I worked at a rural Tim’s in 2000 when I was 16. It was great- the baker would come in and make all the sweets at like 4am. I would often bring home eclairs or creme puffs for my family after work. There would be lineups out the door every morning and people tipped well. There was a smoking section (!) separated by glass and people would sit for hours smoking and drinking coffee, laughing together and catching up. When people ate in-house they got real dishes and we would have to go out every few minutes to bus the tables. It’s a shadow of the lively third place it once was. Starbucks is having the same problem- to cut costs it’s no longer a third place but they’re losing money because that’s what made these places special to begin with.
Tim Hortons is for newcomers and insecure nationalists that will buy anything blasting the advertising space that it’s the most Canadian thing ever. Most established Canadians associate such appeals to jingo with Americans. In other words, Tim Hortons is only Canadian to people who didn’t learn wrapping yourself in a flag and boasting that you’re adored by all, is not the Canadian way.
I’m a Canadian and I never understood the big hard on for Tim Hortons. It always sucked even back in 80’s. There is also much better coffee around than tim’s swill. Last time I was there (years ago) I got their breakfast sandwich and literaly had to stop, open my car door and throw up on the street after the 1st bite of it. I remember growing up mwe had a real legitimate family owned bakery in our town. The product was fantastic and the smell would float around town in the morning making everyone want to go there. IGA bought them out and a Tim’s shortly opened up. SAD.
During the 80s i worked as a Baker for a Tim Horton’s here in Oshawa… Yes, there was a time when Bakers actually made every food item we sold on site… We, also, made and sold cakes and pies, as well.. We sold bag’s of Day-Old Donuts which made a dozen donuts very inexpensive and we didn’t have to throw them out. Now, they cannot sell Day-Old’s by Law..and whom would benefit most from that law.?..Why, all the suppliers, of course.. Burger King’s remind me of Fast-Food Museum’s.. They aren’t busy stores around here…all two of them, here.. So, they will take Tim’s down with them, eventually.. They sure seem to have a head start in that diection.. With real fresh baked goods, the quality was very high. The food and coffee was always the best.. Tim Hortons became a Canadian mainstay because our long and dreary winters.. What’s better than a warm-up with friends on a cold winter’s day? Tim Horton, himself, was a Canadian Hockey player for the Buffalo Sabres.. He opened the first shop in Hamilton, in 1964.. Later, that same year, Tim was suddenly taken from us by a fatal car accident.. The franchise continued to grow and expand across the whole country.. By, 2003, onsite Baking was replaced with trucks bringing all of the pre-prepared food items.. That is the single point in time when i saw Tims selling items that are not made from scratch and with it a whole lot of that stores integrity has continued to devolve to the entirely different stores they are, now.. Quality and Customer Service have declined steeply.
I used to go to Tim Hortons quite a bit. That changed one day when I took my ex-gf there on her 15 minute break to get something to eat. She got some sandwich, and after waiting 10 minutes of her break (drive through was not busy at all btw), we drove back to her place of employment, only to find that it was CHARCOAL BLACK. She tried to eat a bite, but it was legitimately inedible; not a single square millimetre of that sandwich wasn’t burnt. She had to go the rest of her shift without eating as a result. I had already noticed a decrease in friendliness of staff, quality of food and cleanliness of the restaurant, so this was the last straw. After railing on the staff that served us for letting something that blatantly inedible pass, I have not been back to that location, and never will. Fuck Tim Hortins, fuck Burger King for wrecking them and fuck corporate greed.
Just gonna point out that most fast food places aren’t the corporate entity its self, but they’re franchises… individual franchisee’s don’t really exist anymore, they’re collectives. Large corp that manages a large number of franchises whether they’re owned by that company or they’re given the keys so the “owner” can take a % guarantee at the end of the year similar to what’s happened with house rentals. Everything’s going to way of the corpo. Demolition man I think was the movie where everything was Taco Bell? It’s basically that but they put different names out front. It’s like how loblaws keeps adding layers of grocers. 99% of the time you’re still shopping with loblaws.
Truly, ever since they fired legit bakers & went to ‘easybake’ ovens, they were done as a quality place. I worked at a location from 15 to 22 (2010 to 2017) through school & college. Those were still the years where vast majority I worked with were Canadian. Nowadays, that is not remotely the case. Im glad I left before delivery apps became mainstream as well … What a nightmare for both customers & employees. I make all my coffee & tea at home. Saves a lot of $$ & zero complaints on incorrect beverages, lol
every criticism here applies to every aspect of Canada, all thanks to mass migration, an issue that 50%+ of every parties voters agrees needs to stop. 70% of Canadians overall. They have to go back. We can’t elevate anyones life here if we become the countries they flee, and the people make the country.
My sister worked for Tim Horton’s at several locations in West Edmonton (Alberta). Here’s another problem: the same couple (husband & wife) own at least 6 of these franchises, so the same corporate attitude follows from one restaurant to another. The food & customer service quality has went to dogshit over the years. You “hit the nail on the head” when you said that this is due to the fact that they hire mostly immigrant workers in their restaurants. Tim Horton’s is one of the largest corporations in Canada that hires immigrant workers, and that is because the government pays up to 50% of their wage for the first year. They (Tim Horton’s) exploit this loophole in Canadian employment law.
I’m so glad you made this article. Everything said here is complete facts. We grew up on Tim’s, and it was the best growing up. Now It’s just intolerable. Over the last 2 years, I’ve gone less and less. Too many incidents of poor service all round. Now, I won’t go. Everything sucks, the food is garbage, the service is extremely poor, and most of these locations need a good deep clean and a proper cleaning schedule set in place. It’s so sad to see what Tim’s has become 😢
I’m old enough to remember when customer service was important to Tim’s. Factors like minimum wage increases, inflation, staff that no longer speak english have all had a negative effect but the biggest is that the staff and management no longer know what good service is, they have never seen in their stores.
I couldn’t agree more on several things you talked about. I worked at Tim Hortons as my first job when I was 14, had to get a letter from my school to let me work so young. My first night was a CFL game and I learned fast how to work in the busiest of times. My managers and supervisors ran a tight ship and the place was meticulously cleaned top to bottom. Over the years and with new management, things slowly started to slide, quality started going down, and various products started to be replaced or random new menu items added. I worked there for 6 years and worked various positions, first front counter then drive thru, later became a supervisor and ended the last 2 years as a baker/supervisor. I ultimately quit to work in the Industry I’m in today still but at the end it was wild how much responsibility and job duties I had for making $2 over min wage. Years after no longer working there the place isn’t even the same restaurant anymore. Some changes like taking more than just cash only and the dark roast coffee option, I don’t understand how the place survived without either lol. But the last few years, especially after the Burger King merger, they’ve been trying WAYYY to many things. And some of the things that in my opinion I thought were quite successful in actually a decent product and value were discontinued after a while, like the mini snack wrap similar to McDonald’s. Now they’re selling pizza like 7-Eleven, I have refused to ever try it purely out of principle. I’ve said before Tim Horton should have two drive-thru Lanes, not like the current split setup, but straight up two different lines.

Well .. let’s simply say this Back in early 2010s, I think about tasty donuts and refreshing ice cap when picturing Tim’s. We can even sit down and enjoy a few moments of peace. Now days … I rarely step into any Tim’s let alone dinning in, because there will likely be questionable characters in there ( If you know, you know) – But to be fair, there are still quite a few Tim’s that remain decent, most of them are AWAY from populated areas, just gotta find them.
Reasons:- 1. The coffee is not as good. 2. The donuts are way too sweet. 3. The food choices were originally simple… today there are too many & the quality has suffered. 4. The line ups… in store & drive through, there is no quick service any more. 5. The sketchy people all over the place. Beggars, homeless, thieves, druggies… all over the place. Inside, outside in the toilets… which are always filthy… they are all over the place. 6. Prices. When it was simple it was cheap… not any more!
was a cleaner time back then. today all they want to do is watch their phones when no customer are in and washing nothing and i live in Quebec and i cant even get service in french. service is awful you come to the drivetrough window they shove the pay pad in your face and almost throw your order in the car so they can roll out faster
I once walked into a Tim Hortons downtown and not only were the cushioned seats tore up…there was a homeless man strung out on drugs with his pants pulled down and his bare ass cheeks on the seats,when I saw that I left ASAP🥺also I heard stories of these immigrant’s doing their own recipes instead of the Tim Hortons recipes, this lady my mom knows said she got chicken soup that looked like they cooked it at home and it even had bones in it…just madness!
Tim Hortons and Starbucks are terrible coffee. Both of them are s–t !! There is a small privately owned coffee shop called “Twiggs Coffee Roasters” in Northern Ontario. The family has about 3 or 4 locations and is the best coffee!! 10 times better than Tims or Bucks. They buy the beans from around the world, roast the beans in their cafes and serve it. The price is little more than crappy Tims and less than Starbucks. Absolutely delicious!!!
Tim Horton’s has let the ball drop from staff not caring much about customer service and quality products to the cleanliness of the store. They used to bake donuts and muffins at each location but now they are brought in. The portions have all been reduced regarding donuts and muffins. They used to be much bigger than they are now. Most 24 hour Tim’s don’t stock donuts or muffins around the clock and when I pull up to grab a snack heading home from work at 11pm, they are out with only odd things left behind. When a franchise decides to reduce products to make more money and then treat their customers like idiots because they won’t notice is the reason why it’s going slowly to the wayside.
I am living in Canada since 2021, been three times to Tim Horton’s. Ome time i bought just coffee and another time i bought chicken wrap… and the third time i tried to give it last chance. The food was not enjoyapble, the place is dirty and the coffee is overroasted. I will only return there in case im starving to death and dont have any other choice. And for the coffee, i bought myself an inexpensive coffee machine so it costs me around 1 cad per portion which i can make myself and enjoy it at my quiet place rather than spending 4X of that on overroasted piece of vomit at Tim Horton’s
Even before 2019, back in the early 2000s there were signs of the downfall. A lot of my family used to work in a small town Tim’s and make a decent living. They were able to do this because it was a cash only business. Around 2002 they switched to add debit/credit machines and the staff rebeled against it because that would mean they wouldn’t make any tips. They promised them that wouldn’t be the case and they would still make tips, but within a few years they completely DESTROYED the income potential of all the staff there.
2 Sept 2024 Our last 2 visits at Tim Horton’s were disastrous. The one in Brampton was not serving you, you had to use the kiosk while they were serving the drive thru. I asked for help and service and the crew hide in the back of the restaurant.. We left, went to McDonald’s and got service. Saguenay, Qc. We ordered 2 coffee. 1x Dark Roast with 2 milk and 1x Dark Roast Double Double. The crew had issues with double which means the same in French. We waited close to 5 minutes and received 2 water down coffee that we discovered by tasting it over 5 km later. We went to a gas station and surprise, the coffee tasted like a nice roasted coffee… We decided to stop going to Tim Horton’s then. The next day, we went to a McDonald’s in Saguenay, Qc, I said double double (in French) and they knew what to serve us. Last week, I was around Buffalo, NY and I stopped by a Dunkin Donuts and I remember when they were all over the province of Québec. It was good.
I used to work at one in bridgenorth Ontario. They can NEVER keep workers they’re abusive. Sending people out in bad snow storms to clean a driveway covered in snow that you can’t see the ground. And they treated staff like crap. My first job was this place. And now sorry to my brother in law, I refuse to go to this place. Last time I was in my brother’s one there was hornets and flies all Over the food. They do have a multi culture staff. My brother in law refuses for me or his wife to work here. I got to say they do get my bagel right when I do go there. But that’s because my brother makes sure they do stuff right. Every Timmie’s here is like how you’re talking about.
Interesting to see how someone from Toronto area see this stuff, as someone from Niagara. Pretty similar opinions over here too, as we also have a massive influx of foreign students and people from India moving in and not knowing English. And I don’t blame them, they’re making money for their families anyway they can. It’s just crazy that Tim Hortons thought it wouldn’t change anything… about their coffee shop named after a white hockey player. Brand just has no identity atm, I’d rather go to Dunkin Donuts in buffalo.
As someone whose a natural born canadian and first nations, i miss having locals and whites and natural english speaking people who understand integrity and now its all just international students and indians. You have to repeat yourself multiple times and the price to food ratio is crazy, a classic chicken wrap by itself is like 7.49$ and the entire size of it total is like 5 inches long. No drink or side or anything
I’m at Tim’s, perusal this article and 3 homeless just walked in. My Tim’s has gotten so bad. They have a security sweep every hour. This past weekend, police had to make a couple of arrests in one day. I live in downtown Edmonton and there are some locations that close at 7 and 8 PM. I don’t recall it being this bad 5 years ago. I’ve been waiting for this article for years. And you delivered it in a different way than I was expecting. Very cool, thank you. The downfall of Tim Horton’s is a part of a larger collapse of our culture. And younger people never new how it used to be, which makes me sad also. And you’re right, it has nothing to do with race, but the language barrier is a big problem, as are the values of respecting one another and taking the time for the pleasantries. And that goes for customers every bit as much as the staff. And of course, it’s a management issue also. All the emphasis is on speed. No time for relating to the customer, making them feel welcome, and taking the time to make sure the order is correct and presentable. And again, much of that is related to language and cultural barriers. And corporate greed.

I come from a 7 years background at tim hortons, I worked 7 years 1 year baker 6 years Baker/supervisor, running the store along on overnights working double shifts. taking shifts in afternoons after working a nights and even working at different Timhortons across the city that were owned by the same company. the whole schebang. I stopped working at tim hortons in 2019 when i finished college. as a point of referance, Ill even tell you what tims i worked at. I worked at the one outside RVH hospital in Barrie as my “home location” We also owned every tim hortons on the north side of bayfeild, the one inside the hospital and a couple double drive throughs in the city. I worked in timmies through the entire burger king change and I can confirm a few things. Cost went up. this was a direct reaction to the minimum wage hike when the wage went from 9$ per hour to 12, then to 15 and then to 17. the other reason cost went up was the SHEER amount of items tim horthons wants to push. the waste was ATROCIOUS. our tim hortons saw customer numbers of about 4k per day per location. yet we had a waste of about $1.2k per location. over baking was the issue. but it wasnt because you know bakers were making too much it was because the items that were being tossed were unpopular or just unwanted.but thats another story the main thing is they were bad. the starting signature donut line was horrible.
It’s not even the workers. It’s the business at fault . Maximizing profits reducing quality in product. Saving money by hiring imagrannts to reduce wages paid. Shrinkflation. Used to be bakeries on the location. Not anymore, even their coffee is not as good. They offer as little as possible to make more money. Adds to the stress of workers. Reason no one wants to work there anymore. So the service is not as good. It’s a legalized sweat shop like most fast food places now at days. People need to be treated better, and quality needs to be better. I love my Tim’s, but I’m not happy with how things are going.
I worked in one north of Toronto in a smaller town. It used to be owned by white people and had very diverse employees. It got bought out by Indian people and now it’s only international students working there. Doesn’t even make sense since don’t really have that big of an international Indian community in our town (mostly Hispanic and European decent). I don’t know how they let this happen I also feel bad since there is a nursing home a block away and the old people used to always come there to sit inside, now they can’t/don’t do that
I worked for a one of the biggest trucking companies in Canada….NWT New West Trucks Freightliner. We had 20 people in that body shop. Only 4 guys from Canada and everyone else is from the Philippines. Everyone from the shop manager to the foreman. They treated us Canadians like outcasts. Spoke only in their language, which made working on semi trucks extremely difficult. Even when I tried to befriend any of them…they would make fun of me. Constantly belittling others. When I brought this up to HR, explaining it’s really toxic in the shop. Also said it is a safety hazard with the language barrier…I mean we are rebuilding trucks for insurance purposes. What if communication aint clear and something fked up on the truck while on the road? Constant harassing and entitlement. Johnny and Aris…the manager and foreman. They bring in all their friends to work there and push out the Canadian guys. I fought hard but it got to a point where they were getting physical at work. I reported it but it fell on deaf ears. I went to Sait and had the highest marks. I worked my butt off to get that degree. Even when I was in school…the foreign students were sharing answers on tests…cheating. I reported that and I supposed to get the gold wrench but one of the foreign students got it. They did nothing. Wait, they got me a gold pen and said sorry. I am a Canadian. Born and raised. My father immigrated from Portugal and my mother is Canadian. I have paid taxes for over 20 years. Followed the law.
It’s less about the food and more about how people behave in public on BOTH sides of the counter. Respectful employees and dignified customers make for a fine restaurant. But when you got rough employees serving rougher customers – it doesn’t matter which store you’re in. This isn’t just a “Tims” problem, it’s a society problem. Folks don’t know how to act in public anymore.
Tim’s is doing great actually. The most successful restaurant chain in Canada currently. The sentiment in this article is not based on financial success though, but one of nostalgia for how things were pre pandemic. Any company that is successful post pandemic does so by cutting portions, raising prices and stretching manpower as thin as possible. This leads to all the problems mentioned in this article. This is the world we live in now and it’s only going to get worse. The time we are in now will seem like the good old days in ten years.
I went once n asked for a plain bagel toasted with plain cream cheese and a tea with 3 milk instead i recieved a double double in which i was told i ordered wrong guy took it back put a tea bag in the coffee n handed it back to me and on the bagel i got a ice cream scoop of cream cheese and about every single piece of shredded lettuce i kid you not and surprise dude had a turban
Go to Tim’s now compared to the 1990’s the quality was great now I wouldn’t give food to a dog or homeless person. My uncle owned 6 stores in Ontario, sold 5 of them in 2015-2018. They used to eat the food and drink the coffee daily, and they are rich rich btw… They never consume a single thing from their remaining store, and complain about how the stores are forced to hire these kids, and have to go along with all the corporate BS like buying new ovens for pizza. New machines for new items with help that can’t understand English, is obviously asking for huuuge problems. And we are seeing those problems at EVERY STORE.
Pre-95, I’d get a large chilli in a bread bowl, an apple fritter the size of a cow patty and a large coffee for under $5.00! Food was always delicious. My only complaint was a dirty ashtray. No longer. Last apple fritter I had there didn’t have any apple was about a quarter of the size. Lousy coffee. Expensive crap.
Friend, you missed one of the biggest changes. The coffee. That distinctive Tmmies aroma and flavor that brought everyone through the door. It’s gone. The coffee changed in about 2016. McCrape was never consistent. If I even get take-out coffee now, it’s Starbucks. There’s not even a Second Cup anywhere anymore. What happened to them? I flew up to Calgary from Phoenix and grabbed an Iced Cap from the Hortons at the airport. After a few sips I tossed it in the garbage. I don’t know what the hell I drank, but it tasted nothing like coffee, more like bad chocolate and I had the shits for the rest of the day. Always fun coming back to Canada. This place gets worse every time I come back. All the amazing packed restaurants around Calgary I used to frequent, are either gone or completely dying. 😕
What a dream the good old days were. I wish I lived in that period … where it was possible to buy your own house on a single income, find a woman who wanted to have kids and a family, car weren’t overpriced and shit, the country wasn’t flooded with Indies/the third world and overrun with drug ladden zombies.
I have similar experiences with the gentleman’s tik tok about the black coffee. I live in NS—there’s 3 Tim’s in my town and I steer clear from 2/3 of them not only due to not understanding anything they’re saying but apparently ordering an Ice Capp made with milk instead of cream is just beyond mind blowing. Very clear and obvious difference when it’s milk—but they will sit and argue with me, to the point I actually received a 25$ gift card for telling the manager what was happening lmao
Just going to make some corrections/update for people, its going to be long; work there way too long. Tims Hortons got bought out by 3G capital investment and formed RBI; which owns burger king, popeyes, firehouse sub and heinz. The company that use to roast their coffee beans was bought by Mcdonald, after Tim Horton decided to roast their own coffee beans; Mcdonald coffee now has the flavour profile of what old Timmy use to have. RBI was heavily focused on drive thru, uniformity, variety, and price gouging franchises and customers to boost market price; these factors made the experience get bad for owners, employees and customers. If you are buying coffee in front of house expect it to be slow, because they tend to focus on drive thru time due to corporate pushing it; store gets introuble if we do not stay in the green, thats why employee push for each order and drive their cars to fake drive thru time. Corporate wanted more people to visit the store by having more variety, so they started coming with new items every couple of months; some of the new items had so many steps that it became time consuming to make everything. This resulted in the item not looking the way it supposed to, filled properly, squished, cooked properly and even stored longer then it was supposed to. Store experience was based on which franchise or location you are at. Some people placed in management just should not have been chosen, but due to lack of retention or seniority they got promoted. I have seen Management/supervisors argue with customers for the stupidest things and instead of resolving it, they escalated it.
Over priced, their coffee smells like skunk, (no seriously, next time you’re in there close your eyes and you’d swear there was a skunk nearby), they’re discriminatory toward the unvaccinated, they only hire foreign workers, their breakfast is made of mass produced egg, and they put a frozen hashbrown in a toaster and call it “good enough”. People who don’t know the difference between good food and bad food are the only ones who still go there. The same type of people who don’t know the difference between real food and fake food. Tim Hortons was okay in the early to mid 90’s. Now its a dump.
nope, I used to be a baker at Tims back in the day when it was all scratch bake fresh. They switched over to frozen garbage back in 2005 when they got away from baking fresh in the store, its all factory pumped shit made out in a factory now. If you were to compare the donuts, muffins, baked anything then to now you would spit out the shit they try to tell you is fresh today.
Interesting points brought up, things said here have been on my mind for several years. I believe the things happening within Tim Hortons are a reflection of the greater problems we are seeing in the entire country. One thing mentioned briefly was about locations being run entirely by one minority group. This is a HUGE problem we are seeing everywhere and I believe it’s some indirect racism. This happening everywhere has made a massive impact on young Canadians of all races finding first jobs or easy work while they’re students, and i know people who have been effected by this. I know my local KFC is 100% Indian ran, my local Tim Hortons is 100% Philippino. I know of a few Tim Hortons locations ran by Indians, or a few others run by black people. It’s extremely weird but it’s the reality of Canada right now, and it is discrimination to some extent. And the language barrier is a real issue too, not directed at one race or one location, or even one restaurant. But I can confidently say there are locations I avoid in my city because I have had language barrier issues, to the point I’m confident they knew maybe 5 to 10 words of basic English, and they were at the till taking orders. I’ve legit walked out with nothing because the barrier was impossible. Sad the quality is gone, and things have become poorly kept and less clean. It’s common to see flies amongst the food now in Tim Hortons.
Good points, very informative, and that’s all not even to mention the fact that allowing Burger King to buy them added them to the boycott list for supporting Israel — Tim’s by itself didn’t support Israel (as far as I can tell anyway), but they were bought out by a corporation that does, so now they are being boycotted.
